The Biggest Bass in the Pond

Featured Replies

There is a large pond near my house that is stocked with largemouth. It has a few two and three pounders, and two I caught over 4 lbs. But there is one bass I caught two years ago there that measured a whopping 5 lbs 6 oz. My friend sent me a picture of a big bass he caught and it looked to be the same size and had the same pattern along the lateral line. I saw one bass that was significantly larger than the rest on a bed, too, but she would not bite anything I threw at her. I think I see her jumping out of the water too but I can't be sure. If I caught her now it would break my PB. The pond is also super pressured and I think she has gotten wise.

I tried flukes, ned rigs, underspins, poppers, jigs, spooks, upsizing, downsizing, and everything else but she won't bite.

Has this ever happened to you and how can I get this bass to bite?

10” black-blue flake Power worm or same color 8” lizard at night with 3/16 oz bullet weight.

The lizard during pre spawn and spawn periods during day time.

I believe I am a little too far north for lizards and have fished at night on the pond. I will try the power worm.

Slow rolled hard bodied swimbait in the afternoon. I like the Bucca baby bluegill thing (wish I didn't) with the fishing line tail.

I own one baby bull gill in the bluegill color. It is a dink magnet everywhere I fish.

Won’t matter to a bass. If it looks alive, it’s a possible meal. Plastic lizards will be productive anywhere a bass swims, from Canada to Mexico.

Fish it on heavy mono, reel it as slowly as you can, then slow down some more without adding any action at all...

I agree,... I caught a LOT of bass on texas rigged lizards as far north as the Ontario border when I still lived up in Minnesota.

Black/blue or black with chartreuse tail was what I used most.

Edit,... And fish them REAL slow!! Mostly dead stick with small slow drags occasionally

The skill of stealth and the power of prayer.  Nothing else matters.

when I fish down in Mexico lizards are my favorite t-rig plastics, up here in Michigan I haven't used them once. I do understand that the fact that there aren't many lizards around here shouldn't matter as I use other plastics that don't resemble anything and still catch them.

It just feels wrong!
