Pain in left flank....

Featured Replies

So Saturday I was carrying some junk down the stairs for my girlfriend. I've had lower back and occasional neck issues most of my life so I'm used to that pain even though it sucks while dealing with it. Well I got in the garage , set this stuff down and when I got back up had a pretty strong burning sensation in my left flank area. That quickly turned into pretty sharp pain especially when twisting or bending the wrong way. I'm also getting occasional spasms\waves of sharp pain that last a few seconds to a minute that subside. So far I've been taking Alleve and that helps but it doesn't completely do the trick. Going to the doctor to see what they think. Anybody experience this before?

Ah well according to my expert diagnosis, the flank is directly connected to the flank bone which can become inflamed when activating muscles associated with the flank which haven’t been activated in some time.

The only known cure is a beer, a football game and resting of the flank until after Super Bowl

I’ve had back spasms for years, doctor helped me none. The best thing for me is to stretch as much and often as possible and try to get your feet as close as possible to anything you are lifting

I just did something similar. Rest followed by rehab to increase fitness and strength, and better carrying technique, getting younger would help too, but...

I got a cousin with a speech impediment. His name is Frank but he pronounces it Flank. I’ll ask him if he knows anything about a pain in the flank.

Back pain is a close cousin with kidney stone pain. Neither is a good time and difficult to tell which one your dealing with at the onset.

Speaking from experience, my friend, you have a herniated disc.  Your Doctor will probably inform you that surgery, followed by a lengthy rehab. period "may" help.  He may also advise you to live it if you can manage the pain.  Arthritis will probably settle in there as you age.  I've lived with it for nearly 40 years.  It sucks.

Glad to hear there's an expert in the room. :)

Could be  kidney stones but when I passed one , bending and twisting didnt effect it . I still have two that I'm not looking forward to passing .

Muscle tear....no kidney stones. Rest, light exercise, muscle relaxers to help me sleep and no work til Monday.

if it is a muscle pain, then stretches.  i googled it and now i get the most bizarre yoga videos.  tantalizing ones.  :)

but the stretched took a 1 week suffering and shortened it to 3 days.  now i just do them randomly.  even in my work office.  it helps as a preventative measure, i hope.
