I put a deposit down on a 2022 Lowe Stinger 175 at a dealership in Indiana " the boat place".

No place in VA could come close in price even after getting double taxed VA - IN.

Closest dealer for the boat I wanted was in VA and wouldn't budge from MSRP, and had a 6 month wait list. So I searched and finally found a dealer in WI that was thousands less and worth the 12 hour drive and overnight hotel, and had it in stock. Great dealer, I shipped him electronics and they rigged it up with no extra charge.

About the double tax, my bill of sale had no taxes listed, because I wasn't registering it in WI. I think you pay the sales/use tax on the boat in the state you register it in.

Stayed with the stock 60 hp Mercury.

Word is, the 75 hp only gained 3 mph over the 60 yet a $1500 upgrade.

That equates to $500 per mph. ?

Should only have to pay tax in the state it is titled...

That 60 should do well, hopefully you have power trim as that along with the right prop can add 3 mph....I have a 16' Sylvan SC that carries 3 group 31 batteries plus a starter battery along with 15 gal tank. Boat is over 1000 lbs,  I have a 40 hp Merc and get 31+ mph with the right trim out.

Haha yep when you put it like that it’s a lot for 3 mph.

I’ve got a 15ft polar kraft, mod-v with a 4-stoke 25hp. I was going to upgrade to bigger motor, but I love how little fuel it uses. And the speed is not bad, 28 mph flat out with just me, fuel and minimal gear.

The issue with failing to max out the horse power with the outboard that a boat can handle is when it comes to reselling the boat, should you choose to do that.

Obviously you aren't going to get the same amount in resale with a 75 on there you would with a 60.  I wouldn't even consider buying a boat unless it had the max hp outboard on it, but that's just me.  We all have to make our own financial decisions on this sort of thing based on our personal situation at the time.

At least it comes with a trailer, unlike a pontoon at BPS for 100 grand...

Trying to go maximum HP can be a problem. Many years ago I blew the old outboard on my boat. When I was looking to get a new one I inquired about a 4 stroke. My boat is rated for a 75HP but if I went to a 4 stroke I could only go to a 60HP due to the increased weight. My original motor was a 40HP and that is what I went back with due to the increased cost of going bigger.

The 75 is quite a bit heavier than the 60.  It's the choice I would have made.

sounds very similar to my 175 tracker. On average conditions I get 34-36 and on like glass conditions 38 with my 60hp motor.  With the 75hp I think its only about 40mph and you need the right prop and hole mount to get the full 42. With the weight of the boat, I'd still probably travel in the low to mid 30s and only really get to use the full speed at first and last light if I had the 75.

I dont think youll miss much with the 60 over the 75.

You can max it out and pay $1500 more now for 3 mph and be able to sell it for an extra $500 in 10 years. Not a great return on investment if you ask me. Boats depreciate, increasing your upfront cost only increases the depreciation. There's plenty more to that conversation than some would lead you to believe. Ive got a 60 hp on a 16.5 foot aluminum deep V rated for 90. Planes fine and does 32 mph. Some boats don't perform well below their rating like heavy *** nitro deep Vs. Every situation is unique. A test ride will always tell you if you're satisfied or not.

My 16' aluminum is rated for 90 hp, I would not feel safe with a 90 on the back!!  I currently get 31 plus with a 40 horse merc, boat handles well, gets up on plane easy, adding another 50-75 lbs on the back with a 90 would overpower that light weight boat, or at least it would be easy to have it get away from the operator. Been into boats for over 60 years, never have I maxed out the hp rating on any of the 24 plus boats I have owned.  Most always sell to first person that comes to look at it.  Some place like Florida or Cailifornia where boats are traded all day everyday the max hp might be an issue, if a boat is seriously underpowered that will hurt the resale but going with a 60 vs a 75.....dont see any issue at all
