Knot question

Featured Replies

I recently have been using 20lb big game

on one of my saltwater setups. I normally use 5-6 wraps with an improved clinch knot with my bass rods 8-15lb line with no issues.l’m having problems cinching the knot down with 5 wraps with the 20lb big game. Would dropping down to 4 wraps help? I’ve read most people use 5-7 but I’m thinking because the line is heavier I should use less wraps

Try the Pitzen.

For years a Uni knot with 5 wraps is all I Ty on all lines. Braid, fluro, mono..never had a knot fail and can Ty it in the dark.

5-6 wraps 15lb and under 3-4 with line over 20.

Thinner diameter more

Thicker diameter less

The number is arbitrary, there is no set number because of the disparity in line sizes

I use 6 for 12# & 14# (don’t use anything thinner)

4 from 16# and up to 25#

All flouro lines with the SDJ

Seconded. And saliva wet it before you start pulling.

Thirded, I've used the pitzen with up to 60lb big game.

The pitzen is significantly stronger and easier to tie correctly/reliably.  The palomar isn't a bad choice, but the pitzen is a better one.

Same here. From 4# mono on up it is hard to beat. Never worry about my knots now. Only difference is I go 6 wraps, probably unnecessary though.

If you’re pushing the limit using light tackle then pay close attention to your knots.   Choose one that is proven to be strong and more importantly make sure you tie it correctly.  If you’re using line that is 3 times stronger than it needs to be then your knot doesn’t matter much.

I don't know what my exact counts are, but I do know that the thicker the line, the fewer the twists.  I usually just twist until I get about 1/4" worth of knot running up my line once it's tightened.  I don't know if it's right or not, but it seems to work for me.

Tying hooks or lures?
I haven’t used the clinch knot, improved clinch knot, Trilene knot decades.

20 lb Big Game is .018D.

Live bait hook suggest the Perfection loop knot.

Snap or swivel clips, hooks Palomar knot.

Lures San Diego Jam knot.

For you new guys who may not know…

When tying the Palomar on mono, flouro or co-poly be sure not to twist the loop when tying the overhand.
It will crush the line weakening the knot at that spot.

I've used 8 lb flouro and mono with it also .I just don't use them anymore.

I just started tying the San Diego jam. Prob one of the easiest knots out there to tie (IMHO).
