Which so you prefer on crankbaits, jerkbaits, and walking baits?

I'll assume you're talking the tie-on connection.

 

Oval split rings for cranks, teardrop split rings for jerks and walking baits.

Out of curiosity why not snaps on cranks?

I love snaps but never use them.  They allow me to change baits without retying.  Retying is a good thing.

I don't trust snaps...had enough failures where they open up that I'd rather keep my lures when possible.

 

Also, as TB mentioned - retying is a good thing...knots weaken under stress and if you don't retie often, you're putting an old-stressed knot under pressure.

I don’t mind both.  I think they increase the wobble.  I use snaps (very good heavy duty) on spinnerbaits, jerk baits, cranks and spoons.  Mine have never come open.  Sometimes I have to use pliers to open and close them.

Crank baits and jerkbaits are on snaps, often to the factory split ring. Walking baits either a snap or loop knot (no split ring). 

If there is a split ring on the lure when I buy it, I use that.

 

I’ve purchased a few vision 110 jerk baits in recent years without a split ring on them and I wondered why some had them and some did not. I contacted Megabass and they said the ones without split rings are targeted for the Japanese market, while ones with are intended for the North American market.

 

I added a split ring to the ones that came without one.

VMC Doulock on the three listed baits. My big hard swimbaits get Decoy snaps that are never unsnapped once in place.

I  only use snaps when muskie fishing, and I only use Mustad Stay Lok snaps. I've had other types fail. These have proven themselves 100 percent dependable.

 

 

i try to never use those round split rings... i'm afraid the line will get caught where the ends of the wire of the ring are, and damage the line.  i happily use snaps,  even on the split ring.  i've never thought about my setup affecting the crankbaits i use.... 

i guess retying is good - but i guess i'd worry more about my leader to braid knot, than my lure knot...

I always use snaps on crankbaits. Zero issues.

The only time I use a snap or speed clip is surf fishing with big plugs and even then its rare.  I just find them bulky and I can tie a knot almost as fast as swapping the bait on a clip or snap.  Snaps have really improved though.  They make some really nice snaps that very small, but strong.  Generally, I use TA clips when I do use a clip and they work pretty well.

I learned my lesson using snaps a few seasons ago. I found out the hard way that you need to retie often no matter your connection, be it a split ring, snap, or direct tie. I still use snaps for everything blade baits, cranks, jerkbaits, topwaters, most treble hook lures.  I just make sure I retie before every outing and whenever I question the knot's integrity.

 

I've used duolock snaps to split rings for years with no issue.  It causes some crankbaits to hunt during the retrieve, and will add a little more action to the jerkbait, and topwater, depending on the bait.

I've never had an issue with a snap failing, even when snagged.  If the snap looks bent or damaged I do change it out for a new one.

For crankbaits and jerkbaits, I use paperclip style snaps, and I cut off the split rings. The micro TA clips weigh the same as most split rings.
