Talk me out of a Steez

Recommended Posts

How does the steez a2 cast things like weightless 5 inch senkos or wacky rigged 5 inch senkos?

I’m interested in the JDM version. Is that too light for them?

5” Yamamoto Senko weighs 3/8 oz. Any decent casting reel can cast a Senko wacky rigged on a Medium fast rod with ease.

I see it is a $650 at TW for the US version and a little over $300 for the JDM version.  If a $300 reel can't handle 3/8 oz., it wouldn't last long in any market.  Steez are top of the line, so I wouldn't worry for a second about that.

Thanks! I’d seen some people saying the steez was more of a “chuck and wind” reel and one YouTuber that services reels (won’t mention who) even said the steez can’t handle anything under  5/8th ounces.

I found that hard to believe, but wanted to make sure.

I have mine spooled with 16lbs sunline invisible sniper fluorocarbon and it holds quite a bit of line.  Holds about 100 yards of that if I had to guess.  Line has 0.35mm diameter.

Sweet! Should be good to go then! Thanks!

Looks like 25lb tatsu (.016 inches, .405mm) will only fit 67 yards worth on the JDM steez a2 spool. I planned on using that for my flipping/pitching/Texas rig and jig rod. I wonder if 67 yards is enough.

I used this calculator: https://www.omnicalculator.com/sports/fishing-reel-line-capacity

The JDM spool holds 100 yards of .33mm line.

I only put 65-70 yds of mainline on all my rigs...should be enough.

Thats good to know, thank you! I’m used to the deeper spools of lews which will hold 120 yards of 12lb mono.

Like my Tatula 100s - they hold 150yds of 12# - so I put enough backing of 10# Big Game so that I'm only putting that 65-70yds of more expensive line (braid, FC) on top.

So I just noticed the steez sv tw is new for 2024. Now I’m wondering if it’s better than the a2?

Anyone have any opinions?

I’ve taken mine out a few times and it’s pretty good. I can’t really say it’s better than a Zillion. They perform about the same IMO. I don’t have an A2 though

This is kind of the whole point, why buy an aluminum-frame A2 that's a Zillion with an extra BB and metal clutch bar.

The magnesium frame on Steez SVTW makes it One Ounce (30 g) lighter.

Most times, I can't notice the difference, but it's noteworthy on rods lighter than 100 g.

One thing I wonder about is the magnesium in brackish water. I don’t fish brackish water purposefully, but living on the gulf in Florida sometimes a pond or canal looks fresh and ends up being salty.

Anyone else have opinions on the steez a2 vs the 24 steez sv tw?

Such a beautiful setup, something about white or pink braid that always looks so good on a setup.

Would you get two Zillion SV TWs or one Steez SV TW?

It depends on base metal forming and anodizing quality.

Die-cast is no-go - I can't fish my ZPI Alcance in brackish or salt, but my Steez is fine, though I don't often take the Steez on kayak.

On magnesium, look for white deposit, especially around fasteners - indicator the reel body can't take (any more) salt exposure.

On Alcance, I removed the screws and cleaned everything, reinstalled the screws with Mg-specific threadlocker, and moved it into freshwater BFS.

I know this is about Daiwa reels but insofar as magnesium is concerned, Shimano say’s their mag reels are saltwater safe. But then they say that about all of their reels 😂. As for me, I’m not using my Metanium reels in the salt, that’s where my Bantams come into play. 😁

Do some of you guys throw reels against the wall?

Sheetrock would be much easier on my reels than what I normally smash them against

@F14A-B

Both my Steez and Vanquish have seen salt time, daytime tide passes, though I have that niche covered on other tackle now that I'm happier taking out on kayak.

Where these both have annual salt niche is nite-lite winter dock fishing into Arroyo navigation channel.

Love the saltwater fishing in GOM, plenty of great fishing inshore.. trout, redfish and snookers lol. Last I went I didn’t catch a single snook, but plenty of trout, redfish, and the mighty ladyfish.. poor man’s tarpon 😂seems every time I try and make Tampa the red death shows up effectively ruining everything, I end up in Alabama. From Tampa & heading south into Longboat Key those big Tarpon are catchable, along with shark (not so much fun lol ) I’d gladly trade LMB fishing for the salt any day of the week. As far as your pictures , the only thing you’re missing is a Cuban cigar!! 😂

For some reason, busy water on the ocean doesn’t bother me the way it does on highland reservoirs. Maybe it’s because I just love the ocean idk..

I might have to break down and buy a kayak, it has become a pretty popular vessel these days.

@woolleyfooley I'm in the TX hill country.

But my first love is kayak and tide passes on the TX coast - best place in the world to own a kayak - entire coast lined with barrier islands - inside those, we have 15,000 sq-mi less than 2' deep.

If you look at my G/E link just above, I'm beginning the morning in Trout Bayou pass after a 4-mi paddle to get there.  The interactive map covers about 300 mi of kayak launches.

D5vNDPo.jpg

The drill for the rest of the morning is put out a drift sock and drift down Trout Bayou on the NNE wind.

Here's the GPS trail that goes with the NNE wind
