My older brother has lovingly given me an old g-loomis rod and I am trying to figure out what the best use/technique for it would be. It's a g.loomis GL3 MBR783C MH fast action 10-17lb tst. and 1/4-3/4 OZ. I curently have a daiwa tatula ct 7.3 on it but I also have a shimano casitas 150 6.3 I can put on it aswell. Any info on what techniques and line weight recomendations  for the rod would be a great help!

Old rods are the best for chatterbaits.

The Loomis 783 was their worming rod back in the day.  Nowadays most people want a longer rod with 7' being the minimum.  Also, the GL3 was the lowest quality blank but still a very solid rod.  I agree with Reel that it would make for a good spinnerbait/chatterbait close quarters rod.  Overall, the 783 is a very versatile rod if you don't mind it being 6'6".

 I was considering making it a senko/bottom contact for soft plastics rod originally, but I felt like some more opinions would be better. I don't have mutch of an arsenal but I am now considering getting some blade baits. Throw 15 lb big game line on it and take it fishing. That is versatile rod that will work with many things. Mary not be perfect but you can catch make fish on different techniques with it. Don't over think it!

Definitely this.

Lure weights and line sizes are written on the rod itself, so there are those details. As for what to use it for, almost anything. At 6'6", it will lend itself to some baits better than a longer rod, but it is a very nice rod to get started on. 

that should make a dandy spinnerbait and blade bait rod.  I'd bet it would be a good 1/2 oz walking bait rod too.

I have an old 783C GLX. I use it for Senkos and Texas Rigged soft plastic but it also does well with jerkbaits. 

A shorter rod like that is excellent for fishing from the bank.

Agree, I recently got one this length and have found it to be perfect for bank fishing around trees and such.

Most of my fishing is done from the bank so this works out perfectly

Thanks to everyone for the information, I curently have some braid spoiled on the diawa and planing to pick up either floro or mono for leader material. Once it warms up a bit I will dedicate a trip to the bank with just this rod and really get to know it. Already having a conversation with the bait monkey and he says he can get me a deal on some bladed jigs and a few other things after payday 😅

My first thought when I looked at the specs were soft jerk baits or 3/8 oz chatters but you could throw almost anything on that if you wanted to. Probably make a nice damiki rig or senko rod

I use Medium Heavy fast action casting rods more than any others I have. My favorite casting rod is a 7'2" MHF and there are times when I throw treble hook topwaters and cranks on it and also standard T-Rigs etc.  I can cast anything from 1/8-1oz. and I try to set the hook accordingly. 

 

I have a similar G-Loomis rod that is 6'6" and I love it for bank & Kayak and actually like shorter rods at times. 

 

Great all purpose rod...For my Medium Heavy rods I tend to use 15lb Trilene big Game or 30-50lb braid. 

 

However, if I am only bringing one, I will use Mono and go anywhere from 10lb to 15lb. 

What techniques do you need help with?

I'd use it for crankbaits. 12 or 15 pound line depending on my notion and conditions. I'd also not mind it being 6'6", but I like a shorter rod too.

I agree with Mr. Boy. I use all my rods with all my lures. My favorite line for my MH rods is 30 lb. braid. G. Loomis rods are special. Enjoy it!
