Lookin for a rod to handle grass jig fishing duties/light frogging

Featured Replies

Anyone have first hand experience/recommendations on a higher end grass jig rod? Mainly for flipping moderate cover along the bank and into patches of milfoil and pads. Also in spring time for flipping jigs and t rigs to beds. Pretty much always throwing 3/8-1/2 oz. Having the ability to handle some lighter frogging is a huge plus

Currently own an NRX+ 873 for open water dragging which is phenomenal. Also have an NRX+ 844 which currently handles skipping and flipping docks (not sure yet if im gonna be trading this out for an 854). I’m lookin for something now in the grass/moderate cover.

I’m currently between the Steez AGS power pitch, BC2, or p5 FMJ but always open to other options

Any help/info is greatly appreciated!

I'm a big fan of the power pitch for this.  The tip/power ratio is perfect for getting heavy jigs thru the slop while maintaining control.  It's also remarkably versatile, even though it's really hard for me to cut a jig off the end of the line.  I haven't frogged with it, but plan on throwing the kaera this year because my expride is too much for accurate casting with it.

My other jig rod is worthy of consideration as well imo.  The Major Craft Days 360 6'6 MH/F.  The cross over is 1/2oz, but it's better at 3/8oz.

Every one I’ve talked to about the power pitch loves it and gives almost this exact same description. It’s extremely enticing, and think it’s probably my winner. Thanks!

I’ll check out that major craft!

Another vote for the Power Pitch. Best Jig rod I’ve ever used. Haven’t tried it with frogs but have heard it’s great.

I’m seriously considering the power pitch myself. Forgive me for intruding OP, but does anyone have experience with a Dobyn’s champion extreme 745 and the steez power pitch?

I'm not sure if others will echo this but the rod really came alive for me with a slightly heavier reel.  I have a bantam there now, the zillion hd is also really nice.  When I was under 7oz I was less happy with the feel.

I have the DRX 755, it has a bit softer of a mid section imo.  Ultimately when you get to the backbone, they are very similar in power though.  I find the power pitch slightly more sensitive and slightly more tip heavy.

Great info - already have the zillion hd in my cart as that’s what I was planning to use!

Haven’t tried any of the rods you’ve listed, but the DRX755 is perfect for what you are describing and is a phenomenal rod

Have heard that too! Just personally enjoy rods under 7’3!

I sold the 844 and picked up both the 854 and power pitch. Pumped to get them in!

Pride Grass Rake 2.0. Awesome rod and light!

I have the Zillion HD on my Steez and it makes a really nice combo.

The falcon head turner is my rod for those uses. It’s designed as a light pitching rod. Great for 3/8-1/2 plus plastic. Works great as an open water frog rod (or light cover). It does a ton, but this is its wheelhouse.

Kistler Helium HE7045HMH

7'0" Heavy Medium Heavy X-Fast

Lure: 1/4 - 1 ox

Ready, set:   I have the DRX 755 and I prefer the Xtreme 746.  There, that didn’t hurt.  Now with that said, the NFC Edge Silver Widow 736-C would be even sweeter.

Like @Catt, I use a Kistler Helium heavy-medium-heavy in my ponds with heavy vegetation.

I bought a Douglas X-Matrix 745F at the New England Fishing Expo.  It's build quality is very good and the tip feels somewhere between Kistler's fast and mod-fast.  We'll see if that fits the bill when Massachusetts thaws out.

I can buy 3 Heliums for one NRX+.  The Heliums are great rods and for me, they're as high-end as I need.

Good luck finding your rod.

To this dumb Coonass high-end has nothing to do with price.

@Columbia Craw I’m a little bit late, but can you explain why? Also how does the sensitivity between the extreme and xtasy compare?

First, there is a two hundred dollar difference.  Even though the Xtasy is a nano resin blank, it is not as fast as the 746 and is not a true 5 power in a Dobyns sense.  The 746 is just as sensitive in my opinion and I let the 6 power scare me away for years.  Big mistake on my part.  The tip on the 746 is very active yet the power shows up quick.
