Landed my first DD today

Featured Replies

I'm so mad. This is going to sound like fish story.

Landed my first DD of my life today. Estimate between 10 and 11 lb.  I've caught an official 9 before, and this was much bigger. Hooked it on a Spro Chad Shad in threadfin color. Had it on the kayak. Reached around to open my bag to get my scale out and flop flop and she was gone! Knocked my rod in the water on the way out of the boat too! Luckily I was in about 2 feet of water at the time, so I was able to retrieve my gear. My new bantam and rod and swimbait was all laying on the botom! But I'm so d**n mad I couldn't get an official weight on her. She was an absolute unit.

Ugh man… yea that’s a tough pill to swallow.. glad you got your equipment back though.

You've caught a nine, so you know what a ten+ looks like. Change your "My PB" accordingly. And congrats! You were going to release her anyway. You just hurried that along by a few seconds.

Not at all. Stuff happens and especially on a little kayak with a big DD.

That sucks pal, couldn't imagine how upsetting that would be.

It still happen, and you still caught her, hopefully in time the sting lessens, and the memory of the catch increases.

That truly sucks but like Katie mentioned you were going to release her anyway. You still caught a DD and that doesn’t change. Congrats.

Well at least you got it in the boat and got to hold it. I can't tell you how many times I've went to grab my phone to take a pic of the bump board and a nice bass does a flying leap and escapes my lens.

Dang, that hurts.🙁  Congratulations on the catch.  Sorry to hear the quick release.

Every boat has its pluses and minuses. The high sides of my canoe make it almost impossible for a bass to escape, but they try. A kayak doesn't give an angler that cushion.

That sucks. I know the feeling brother. It wasn't until I was standing on the deck with my PB LM in my hand that I realized I'd left the camera at home. Didn't have a cell back then. 🤬

On the upside, you've now caught a DD!!! Congratulations!!!

Congrats!  Sorry you didn't get to weigh it but that doesn't take anything away from this accomplishment.  Fantastic catch!

I hate when I do everything right - they bite - I hook em - I fight them to the bank or boat - I get them right where I can smell em and they flop right off and slowly lumber back down

It makes me sick but I'll tell ya - it's part of fishing and I go through periods where I land a lot of em and I go through periods where they come off.

Thanks all! I tell ya, it was an awesome experience, though. This particular section of lake had overhanging blackberries down to the waters surface. Threw that Chad Shad up in a small hole and it didn't even hardly hit the surface and everything exploded! I could immediately tell it was giant. Gave me a good fight for awhile and I was able to lip her and get her on the yak.

Excellent. You did catch her and on a glidebait. She's still out there, daring you to come back.

You'll get over it and catch another one, I'm sure.

Most of my biggest fish are stored in my little mind, never had a camera.

Honestly, I love seeing the big catches of others rather than mine.

I am sure it's disappointing to not get a scale on the fish but just take a deep breath and remember how awesome it was to catch that beast!

On the plus side.... now she could be any size you want 😂

Jokes aside it sucks but you have the experience of it and that's priceless. Think of how many people who may never experience that even hunting them.

What is even better is that is the very first time I used a chad shad, and the very first fish I caught on a big glide bait.

2025 has been a slow start for me regardless as I have caught only two fish.  But they were both pretty quality fish.  A four pound smallie and this beast.

So, you caught a DD lmb and a four-pound smallie, huh? I caught a chain pickerel. I'm still ahead, right?

Well, that is only two fish in about 30 hours of fishing.  I guess I did catch some trout too, but that doesn't really count.  The water temps are still too cold here.  And the lake I frequent is about 4 feet above normal full pool.  Some of the flats around the lake shore have about a foot of water on top of them that are normally dry.  It is currently like trying to figure out a whole new lake.  I am fishing in places that I have never seen under water in the 10 years I have been going there.  Kinda weird.

man..hooking that beast on a new bait is like poop icing on a kkrap cake.   yewzah!!

Fish stories are what dreams are made of. I’ve done that before on my kayak but the fish was hanging on the scale…..9, 10, 11….flap flap gone! Scale was still climbing! Absolute giant. The scale also went overboard while trying to grab the fish with my free hand. Double dipping lol  She hit a slow moving 6th Sense Trace.
