Swim Jigs for Brushpiles?

Featured Replies

Anyone ever tried tossing a swimjig into a deep brushpile say 15-20ft. Seems to me the headshape would be more effective at coming through and over the wood than a football head. Anyone care to share their thoughts?

Yes. All the time. It’s a rarity if I get hung up coming through wood.

What colors do you prefer? Does color even matter that deep?

I've had good luck with Sieberts - Dredge Brush Jig with the wire tie. It holds up well and comes through the cover like it should. There's a good reason it is one of their perennial best sellers. I usually throw a 3/8 oz in green/chart for clear water, blue oyster in stained.

I have been using the Dirty Jigs Finesse, the local ponds I fish are loaded with debris and these work well. Also they have some heavy duty swim jigs.

Yes, a swim jig is my default jig to tie on since we have far more grass then brush.  But then I’ll throw them into anywhere and they come through great.  Only caution is using swim jigs with the lighter weed guards to do that.  They can get hung up easier and I’ve lost a couple that way.

Actually the color I ordered was "Green Pumpkin Purple Gold."  It has both green and purple strands in it so I can use either a green or blue/junebug trailer depending on water clarity.  The wire tie skirts Sieberts does really hold up well.

Man that’s was a pretty good write up!

For sure, however I can’t get how he retrieves low and slow and sometimes like a jerkbait. Would be great to see a video on this and how he imparts this subtle action.

90% of the time I use a .25 oz. swimjig with a straight tail minnow and fish it like a jerkbait. I have nerve damage in my hands from the service that prevents me from doing the Alabama shake. If I'm hitting a brushpile I usually use a flipping jig. Heck I think I might own 2 swimjigs over a quarter ounce. I might have to pick some up and give this a try.

I generally Fish a 3/16. I’ll use a slow steady retrieve. Give it random pops here and there. I’ve never really tried to fish it like a jerk bait I gotta try that!

I have been getting more into 5/16 swim jigs. Since I fish them kinda funny. I’ll use a swim jig to hop off the bottom, drag, swim you name it. They cat filamentous algae so well and grass. So I found the article super interesting.

I listened to a podcast on swim jigs last year and was surprised at the love for really light swim jigs.  Was counter to what I'd always done.  I spent a fair amount of time after that with light swim jigs, but could never get bit.  I probably should try again now while the LMB are on small bait.

I like any jigs in any wood that it'll come through - deep or shallow!

Never really been a swim jig guy throwing mostly spinnerbait’s. After Bill Lowen’s win, a local guy I had a chance to talk with him and decided to have a dedicated setup for swim jigs and spend most of my time learning to use it this year.

Funny how that Bassmaster article was in last month’s magazine and just recently posted. A good read for sure.
