What kind of line are you using?  Braid has a distinct sound going through the rod guides.  Fluorocarbon and mono are virtually silent.

And of course that changes based on the braid - Power Pro original, Sufix 832 and Seaguar Smackdown all sound different even on the same rod.

I think the op is referring to the sound a Shimano DC reel makes when you cast it.. It's a distinctive whine that you either hate or like.. I can't stand it lol...

I have a couple DC models... and yes, they make the "weeeeeeeeee" sound. Try throwing a heavier bait. Also turn the brakes down a bit. The "weeeeee" sound comes from the digital brakes engaging. In my experience, they'll only engage at a certain spool speed.

Ah, ok got it.  I have one of those, and yes, it makes that whining sound.  I fish with the brakes mostly off.  Seems you can't turn off the DC.

The DC sound is programmed in.  I wish Shimano let you customize the sound :)

The DC stands for don’t complain.  I have one DC and I just take my hearing aids out.

The buzz that the DC reels make is the sound of the braking system functioning.  For short, easy casts it may hardly function at all.  It's the longer bomb casts that bring that sound out.

The first question I have to ask is that are you sure its the SLX DC and not an SLX A or XT?

What line are you using?

What braking profile?

How tight is the spool tension?

Normally I run my spool tension really loose, but the SLX/Curado DC works best with a little more tension than I like.  Tighten the tension until the spool stops moving and then back it off just a tiny bit.

You stated that it is used. Are you 100% certain it’s an actual DC reel?

If it is functioning fine (no backlashing, getting good distance) and not making the characteristic DC sound, then I would be ok with that. On the other hand, that sound is what the DC brakes make when in use.

@Murph fisho What DC brake setting are you using, what line and is this your first bait caster?

I'm willing to bet the OP ended up with a non DC reel. You should be able to hear no matter what

Seems like a real possibility. @Murph fisho is there any chance you could post a couple pictures of your reel?
