Fishing gloves?

Featured Replies

Who uses gloves and what is the purpose of them? You know, those half finger thin gloves all the pros wear.

Solved by Glenn

I don’t have any.

The only reason I’d get some is for sun protection.

Some days I’ll do a good job of protecting my skin but the tops of my hands get red.

Ah okay, thanks.

I use them when it’s cold and I’d like to use some for the summer. I am quickly finding out that my tolerance for the heat isn’t what it used to be and I can get baked quickly and easily. I now bring spf 50 and Glenn’s article could not have come at a. Ore opportune time.

I wear UV sun gloves most of the time and during the cold weather seasons I’m wearing wool gloves

At this point in my life...68 yrs old...it's just damage control but yes, I do wear them for protection from the sun after all these years of not being concerned with the sun.

I wear the Fish Monkey “Free Style” custom fit gloves. First, like a lot of SPF gloves they offer sun protection for my hands.

But second, you can cut off fingers to half length or longer/shorter any way you prefer.  Ingenious!

I cut 9 fingers to the half way point so that I can tie knots, thumb the spool, work the phone, etc.

But, I leave my left thumb full length since I use it to lip bass boat side. It protects that finger from getting chewed up. I had a nasty infection on that thumb a couple years ago now it’s fully protected at all times.

I wear a glove on my left hand so that I can grip bass for photos. I don't wear a glove on my right hand because it's easier to tie knots and do other fine motor tasks without one.

I have both, a pair for colder weather and thin sun protectors.

Bonus factor is palm protection from getting “finned” and better grip with the slimer’s (pike, gar etc.)

I wear sun gloves when it's really sunny and I'm gonna be out for a while. In the colder months I wear cheap fingerless fleece gloves for warmth.

Shelta makes hats that fit my giant dome (size 8!), and I got their face gaiter and gloves.

Wear the face protection pretty much every time I'm on the water.

Dermatologist has already taken three cancerous spots off my dome.

I wear the gloves when I'm going to be fishing all day.

Yup I  where them . Cover as much as I can when I’m on the water .. skin cancer not wanted .. you should see top my of  mothers head . Not a pretty sight .. now she can’t go out with out a hat .. until things heal to where she can get fitted for a wig .. it ain’t growing back . While some think skin cancer isn’t serious . Oh it can be very serious.

I wear them all the time, Doing yard work, mowing the lawn, etc.  Always when fishing. The sun is very brutal down here in Texas and I abused my skin for many years.  I see a dermatologist every six months and have had a chunk of Basil cell Carcinoma removed from my face.  Please cover up & use sun block if your out in the direct sun. You can thank me 20-30 years down the road.

Those are sun gloves.  They're SPF 50 and prevent sunburn.

Well, you can see what I'm wearing - even on a cloudy day.  No shorts & T-shirts here. Not even sandals (I wear Hey Dudes).  I'm covered. And I have 70 SPF on my face, ears, and neck (Yes, I know they say more than 50 SPF isn't needed... until the day comes when they say you needed more all along).

I saw a dermatologist over the winter for the first time in my life, and got a clean bill-of-health. :)

Note I wear glasses with 100% UV protection too.  I'm not messin' around!

Interesting discussion. I've never given the sun much thought other than not getting sunburnt.

I have been wearing the Sims SolarFlex Half Finger sun gloves for several years since I had a couple of instances of skin cancer.

That’s a darn nice looking hat.

I always have a baseball style hat on but should probably where something similar to yours.

I’m going to check them out.

Living in Florida and growing up fishing and kayak fishing. I can tell ya the sun is noooooo joke. More older friends have had skin cancer cut out of them than I can count. Including my dad. And I’ve had my hands get scorched. I always wore gloves. And long sleeves and pants. Knees/legs in a kayak is the sudden death. You get home and realize how burned your legs actually are

Like a lot of things...wish I had made changes earlier in life.

  • Have ringing in my ears...no ear protection in the duck blind.
  • Grew up next to a public pool...we never wore sunscreen in the 70's and 80's...would just get horrible sun-burn, wear a white t-shirt for a few days...then we were good to go(!). Super dark and tan at the end of the summer.

And when we were not at the pool, went to the cabin on the river...more time in the sun.

Wife and I joke we are putting our dermatologist's kids through college : )

I spend a good bit of time outside... I get burnt occasionally, but mostly I get tan. I thought it was just what country folks did. I don't think I've ever used sunscrean. It's possible momma put some on me when I was a small child. I haven't ever used it as far back as I can remember though.

I can relate to this one.  I have permanent damage in my left ear solely due to gunfire from hunting.  I wear a hearing aide in that ear which helps in every day situations.  But there's no reversing the damage once it's occurred.

SIMM’s open palm fishing gloves👍

Tom

PS, loss of hearing is normal for most men over 60! Almost def in my left ear and about 50% in my right ear…aids needed. Hunting, shooting, vibration testing but A fuel dragsters and drag boats didn’t help😵‍💫

I have hearing loss from shooting without protection as well as woodworking machinery without protection.

I am thinking about doing the sun shirt and gloves thing for any of the longer days on the water.

We have a number of sun days until our skin has had enough before the cancer develops, the number of days depends on your specific skin type.

I am blue eyed Nordic/Scottish with skin not developed for tropical sun that I exposed it to and damaged my skin beyond repair.
