Japan Tariffs

Featured Replies

I was just notified by Asian Portal that there will be no new tariffs on personal purchases under $800 until 8/29/25;  thought some members may be interested.

Yes the De Minimis exemption gets removed at the end of August. This isn't just Japan though, it's all countries.

Delivery’s are still sluggish though. No extra charges probably just increased volume. Use FedEx if at all possible

Well I better figure out which reel to get then and get it ordered asap. Thanks for the heads up, I've been wondering.

Digitaka and Japan lure shop are also both closed for holiday, that's going to add to the shipping crunch at the end of the month.

Thanks for that reminder, I got caught up in the Holiday thing last year..

Oh crap.

So the order needs to be placed before 8/29 or I need to get it delivered and out of the hands of say FedEx before then?

I'm "assuming" the later?

My understanding is it has to be through customs prior to the 29th

I love tariffs (said no one ever).

Let me edit to add: I have an MBA with a concentration in economics. I spent my career in the supply chain field. Tariffs are not, in nature, a bad thing when applied properly and to a specific commodity. A countrywide tarrif is just stupid (IMO). Not trying to get political at all, and if it reads that way, please feel free to moderate that.

I believe Japan orders under $800 will now be hit with an $80 charge based on the way the EO is worded. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

edit: so even a $20 lure purchased by itself will get $80 bucks tacked on.

My MBA can beat up your MBA.

Kidding. Mine is in HR. They asked if I wanted to make money with mine and I was like LOL no thank you.

I work for a tier one supplier and you can imagine what that's been like since Jan 1.

Honestly I didn’t think I’d use mine much and got it because my company paid for it. It turned out to be invaluable…

I'd almost be willing to bet those tariffs never get enacted. Seems like the T-word has been used more as just a scare tactic than anything. Not getting political I'm talking about money not thieves and liars. LOL

You make it sound like the "scare tactic" has been harmless.  Perhaps that wasn't your intent, because it's caused a great deal of economic harm already.

Conversations at ICAST were dominated by companies pulling back on spending across the board until "things become clearer".  This is happening across every vertical and sector in American business right now. When major companies aren't spending money, everyone loses.

A friend of mine was at a BPS last week and I asked him to pick up 2 colors of a specific lure for me;  I had already checked the price on line.  He took them off the display which was priced as it showed on line.  The cashier scanned the bar code and the price was 33% higher.  My friend put up a fuss and received the as marked price;  he was told the prices were going up so fast that store employees were not able to change them fast enough to keep up with the cash registers.  That 33% increase was on top of a 20% increase the lure received earlier this year.  It's made in China.

What lire was it? That doesn’t sound right.

Tariffs on China delayed for 90 more days yesterday in case anyone missed that.

I agree, Glenn. And unfortunately it's usually the working stiff that's going to be punished the most.

I'm Canadian, so everyone knows about the tariff nonsense between our two countries. But beyond the tariffs, Canadians have been boycotting certain US products, most noticeably booze, vacations and visits to border towns.

There are now at least 3 Kentucky distillery that are on the verge of bankruptcy..due to tariffs and "changing consumer attitudes" and border and vacation destinations are hurting.

And the sad part is this was all preventable and unnecessary....

I never said anything about it being harmless at all. I just said they were using it as a scare tactic. I believe you when you say it has caused harm and I have heard similar things too but I believe the intentions of the administration is to scare other countries into towing the line with what they think is fair trade. Yes at the end of the day the little guy usually receives the brunt of the punishment from it but I wasn't debating the ramifications of the tariffs just the intent. Sorry if I confused anyone.

The little guy always bears the brunt of it. What some people don’t understand is that China, Japan, India, Switzerland, Niger, whatever country it is that we are talking about DOES NOT pay the tariffs. The consumer pays them.

To be clear, the April "Liberation Day" tariffs that resulted from the escalation between both countries in April are what was delayed, the 30% baseline tariff on China that was settled on in May is still in effect. They know the 145% tariff would cause extreme economic harm, it's not going to happen and will continue to get delayed. But the 30% is still steep enough to send ripples through the supply chains. The big name tackle shops like BPS who source overseas will likely continue to raise prices.

We’re going to begin seeing American based firms starting to raise prices as they burn through their pre tariff stockpiles. It’s going to bother me a lot more when “made in the USA” gets punished and has to raise prices 30%.

I don’t see how any of us who love the sport of fishing are going to benefit long term from these policies.

I'm worried that once prices go up, they won't come back down. It's easy for big corporations to blame supply chain costs, or tariffs for increased consumer prices, and then fail to lower them after the pricing pressure goes away, because most consumers get used to it and accept it.

It's a mixed bag. Have not seen major increases, if any,  from Bass Pro Shops. Realize it's a major retailer and not a manufacturer.

Good Fishing
