Cold water jerk bait question

Featured Replies

What do you think would happen if I put a bullet weight about a foot up  the line held in place with a bobber stop and attached a jerk bait to the end?

Would that keep it just above the bottom so I could jerk it at 20 feet deep or so or would it ruin the action?  Might disturb the bottom too.  Has anyone tried this?

Pretty sure a Carolina rigged rapala has been around a while just for that purpose.

Guaranteed snag if you jerk that rig.

Not sure, but I guess I’d rather try a +1 or +2 bait or suspend strips.

If you try it report back and let us know.

Use a count down model Rapala or a Husky Jerk or a completely different tactic altogether.

Odd man out : Go for it!  Report back when you catch a new PB (or keep it secret 😜)

Old needs to be new

hmmm … twice today I said that

Will want a high shallow running jerkbait. A suspending jerkbait will hang on the bottom. The beginning depth is no longer starting from rod tip but with the weight one foot from lure, the starting depth is now one foot. If you were throwing Megabass Vision 110s you’re gonna lose several $25s. This setup will also kill the jerkbait action.

Put the weight three feet above an Original Floating Rapala, fish it slowly, with softer jerks, than you normally do with a suspending jerkbait, and tell everyone you are fishing for walleye.

I think the bobber stop would just slide down the line and you would end up with a jerk bait that has a bullet weight on top of it that the bass would probably not go for but could be wrong. One rig that I've tried out and had some success with is a mini carolina rig that uses a carolina keeper and then a weight and then a bobber stop with a soft jerkbait on the end. That seems to do ok especially with elaztech flukes if there's grass on the bottom but I found I ended up gut hooking them a lot with that rig so have retired it for the most part as there's other stuff I use in that sort of situation that doesn't seem to gut hook them as much.

That said not trying to discourage you or anything you just asked what I think would happen so that's what I'd say but I'd actually be interested to see if you try it and what the results look like and it would be funny if I was completely wrong and you ended up with a bag of hogs.

It's not cheap, but this is the deepest diving jerkbait I've ever fished, works 15' reliably with the outer weight attached and is a top producer for me.

If you want innovation and think out of the box, you could use a jerkbait on a drop shot rig and jerk it.  That way, you would only loose the weight if you got hung up.  The action would be different also.

If I fished that rig around here I would hang the jerkbait on a snag, or the weight would get stuck under something.  Either way, I'd lose the bait.

Several interesting suggestions, all of them seem better than my original concept.  I like the suspend dots, seems like the slickest way to go but the Carolina/Rapala combo seems like a winner also.

Thanks to everyone..It's great to have a site like this to learn.

Replace the hooks on a deep-diving suspending jerkbait with one size bigger.  That will weigh it down enough to get it to run deeper.

If you are intending to hit just above bottom, you might try this guy below. What you do is, set it up sort of like a drop shot. You will have to experiment with length on the bottom line to your bait and the line to your lure. It can be a nightmare to cast. I found it easier to sort of side arm cast low and then move my boat/kayak back while letting line out (long lining) so I can have a longer retrieve and a better chance of hitting the right depth. It's better to do this on a sandy bottom first.

It should end up looking like this. It is a common walleye technique. We use to call it a 3-way. Not sure what it is now.

The solutions keep rolling in.  Now I have 4 options, all better than my own.

Thanks to everyone, it's great to be able to tap into the experiences of other fishermen.
