Line for Panfish on Spinning Gear

Featured Replies

I’d like to do some yellow perch fishing this coming year using anything from live bait to small spinners and beetle spins. I have 2 setups, a lightweight with a 1000, and a med light, although the specs say it matches the lightweight, with a 2000S (shallow). Looking for line suggestions, I currently have 10 lb 832 on the 1000 that seems to work pretty well, the 2000 is new and empty. I have very little experience with these small setups, when I tried floro on the 1000 some years back it was hard to keep on the spool, I think it was 4 lb, so I went to the braid. I’d like to keep the lines as light as possible without having problems. Around here panfish are well under 1 lb.

Two of my panfish rigs correspond to yours....and here's what I have on them

Light rig - 1000 reel, L/F rod - 6# Revolve braid, 4# InvizX leader around 15'

Med-Light - 1000 reel - ML/MF rod, 8# Sufix 832 braid, 6# InvizX leader around 15'

Thanks, I was just reading about Revolve in a year old thread.

Just grab some 6 lb supernatural mono and run with it. Braid to leader is nice in some instances, but straight light mono is perfect for what you want.

I too have a 2000 shallow spool reel (Miravel) I had mine spooled with 4 pound monofilament mounted to a 6’-8” ultralight rod and casting a 1/16th ounce underspin with a crappie tube I was dang near emptying the spool. I wound up spooling 6 pound Suffix 832 on there and will run a 4 pound monofilament leader when the season opens this year.

4lb Yo-Zuri hybrid is what I use. It’s extremely manageable and affordable.

I only fish UL. My gear is much lighter than yours. Most of the time, I use Lelands Trout Magnet SOS 4 pound copolymer line. Based on the bait I’m throwing, I sometimes downsize to the 2 pound version of the same line. This is on a Vanford 500 size reel.

I do this often.

Light or ultra light. Can be tough to feel the bite with heavier.

4-6lb of anything for line: mono or braid. Doesn't matter much.

When I started fishing, it was with 8# XL. Went to 4# XL in my teens. Caught tons of panfish with several other species thrown in.

EDIT: I have 6# braid on one spinning reel. Zero abrasion resistance. This is one of the very few places where I would use a leader.

I use 4# Excel mono from Basspro on an Okuma 1000 reel. Handles good with 1/32 oz Beetle Spins.

I prefer 4# mono for my Panfish rigs. I like the handling qualities over light braid.

4 pound Sunline Super Natural for mono...

4 pound Seaguar Invizx for fluoro...

6 pound Sufix 832 with a 4 pound fluoro leader for braid...

The only time I use braid is when I am fishing really really deep for Perch or maybe Gills, otherwise very much prefer mono for most things Panfish... I also use 6 pound mono for mainline when bobber fishing with a 4 pound fluoro leader...

Typically mono has better knot strength than fluoro, typically making it stronger in real World use than fluoro... There are a plethora of fancy lab tests that have shown this, there are always grey areas though.

Thanks all for the help, ordering some 6 lb Yo-Zuri copolymer for the 1000 with the regular spool, and 6 lb Sufix Revolve for the shallow 2000.

Check the line capacity - I know that my Miravel 2000s reels hold the same amount as my Miravel 1000....so it really doesn't make a difference.

6 pound mono for this guy.

I don't do a lot of panfishing though. And I'm about to do far less starting this year too.

The 2000s says 100 yds 4 lb mono

The 1000 says 140of the same.

FWIW, I just measured the 1000 capacity using 10lb 832 to what I consider full, 240’. The 2000s only took 140’.

Both are Stradics although a few generations apart.

I like plain 4lb mono.

6lb trout S.O.S. mono line is cheap and strong.

@padlin Im not sure if you’ve used Yo Zuri hybrid in the past but it was my experience last season that it was pretty stiff until I used it for about a dozen trips. After it “broke” in I’ve been happy ever since. As per usual YMMV.

That 6 pound Yo Zuri is like 10 pound test.... It's really good stuff, but it's comparable to say 10 pound FC Sniper in strength/diameter.

I would highly suggest going lighter or with something else, it's very thick stuff, much stronger than it's rating because they take 10 pound line and label it as 6 pound to make one think you are fishing really strong 6 pound... Lot of companies do it...

These companies use line ratings as a form of marketing, you really need to go by diameter, not pound test. That aspect of the industry is kind of a mess, but for Panfish, truly think you will want to go lighter...

Thanks, I’ll try to remember come ice out.

Changed it to 4lb. It’s on order so no going back now.

I think you will be much happier that way, like I said, it's really a very nice line, they just label it a bit misleading.

Best of luck!

I always use 6 lb mono.

I use a 6'4" St Croix Panfish rod and a 1000 series Daiwa Exceler reel with 6lb Trilene XL. Great combo for small tubes/grubs.
