Looking for a spinning rod.

Featured Replies

Any suggestions for the most sensitive ML spinning rod in the 200-300 dollar range? Wanting to use it for ned rigs, stupid tubes, and similar presentations.

Throw in another $30 and you’ve got your choice of lengths in an expride.

Yeah I think that is the universal go to rod in that price range. For good reason. Was kind of wondering if there were other options too.

There are many ML rods in your price range I love the Shimano Zodias, really nice, St Croix makes really good rods I think they are a little stiff for ML but still really nice, Lew's is one of my all time favorites and it doesn't get the recognition it should, I have a Team Lew's Pro TI Speed Stick. It's a super fine rod I love the grips and the Roland Marten stick it in your belly end butt. G-Loomis makes one but it's pricey for the name not any better than the others I've listed. Go look and feel some different brands at the tackle store that will help you decide but all I've listed are good buys within your budget, look for sales!

I got my expride for $240 and couldn’t be happier with it. 6’10 ml. The zodias also got redesigned with a new reel seat that I prefer. You could also look at the Fenwick elite. I held the Fenwick eagle in store and it felt really nice and balanced well.

SC Victory is in that price range. Nice rod, good warranty and American made.

Top end of that range also but I use a Kistler Helium for the baits you mentioned. I actually use their lighter medium (a 2 power), for my Jack of all trades spinning rod. I also have the ML and it's my main Ned rig rod and a littler lighter than what I'd want to use for tubes, wacky rigs, shakyheads, ect.

I'm a Kistler fan. Their Helium line might be what you're looking for. They're made in Texas and if you call them with questions, you have a good chance that Trey will answer the phone. Kistler's customer service is excellent too.

What does "Mag Bass Spin" mean? Magnum?

“What is Edge Mag Bass?

Edge Mag Bass refers to a series of fishing rods designed specifically for bass fishing. These rods are known for their high-quality construction and performance, developed by North Fork Composites under the guidance of fishing rod legend Gary Loomis.“

I got my kid a ML St Croix Avid specifically for neds and it works perfect.

Right at your budget.

Yeah, but what is a magnum medium light? To me, if something fishing is described as magnum or mag, I assume it's physically larger or more powerful than the original variant. I understand that in this case they mean that it is between a ML and a M, but for me magnum medium light is a contradiction and linguistically sloppy.

The terms, descriptions, are coined by Gary Loomis so that is his fight to fight. You have to experience for yourself the rods to gain appreciation for the term.

Mag is by definition a “stronger” butt section with varying degrees of taper that defines each model, more like a light/medium/heavy build. Not understanding the construction development to describe each model is not a descriptive problem but an understanding issue on your behalf.

Best recommendation is to put several in your hand to better understand the meanings. Pretty sure Shimano still uses his terms in their rod designations so you should be able to somewhat feel for yourself.

No amount of explanation is going to satisfy your understanding. I”m sure “linguistically sloppy” is a term hundreds of thousands of users would not agree with, more of an ignorance of the products so not going to argue semantics.

Google is your friend, but nothing is as efficient and effective as hands on.

some have some decent deals on the discontinued Shimano Zodias. Local tackle shop had them on sale for $160.00 which is a steal. Most likely no help to you. The Expride B is a fine rod.

@CaughtMeABiggun - Also, if you wait a couple weeks TW is due to run their 20% site wide sale. That would bring that expride down to $265.

I'll be watching for that

Phenix Recon. Sick rod.

Me: Phenix Maxim. Sick rod and you get to keep half your $

Expride would easily be choice 1 here
