Trilene knot number of wraps

Featured Replies

With 6 lb. mono, what is the optimum number of wraps around the standing line when tying the Trilene knot? Thanks.

I never use line that thin, but any line that wraps around itself I use 6 for 15# and under and 4 above that.

6-8. But a lot of time for line that thin I'm also just tying the basic improved clinch. It depends on the relative diameters of the line and the hook wire. A small wire like on a ned rig or a trout sized egg hook (around a #10 octopus hook) then I just tie an improved clinch. If the hook eye wire is a little heavier like a #2 hook on a jighead minnow then I'll go to the trilene knot with 6 wraps usually.

5. Been using it for decades. I put my index finger through the loop , makes it easier to tie.

Alton Jones said six wraps for the improved clinch on the Texas outdoors show. That's what I have been using on my improved clinch. I can't see it being any different for the Trilene knot.

The only knots I use to tie on lures or hooks are Trilene and Palomar. With the Trilene knot I have a hard number. It's unequivocal. This is unarguable and must be used every single time. I wrap six times...unless I'm distracted by a bird or a fish jumping or I think about something funny from 40 years ago and then I probably wrap 7 times...or maybe 8. Don't quote me. Interestingly, the Trilene knot is highly reliable for me regardless of my distracted wrapping number. My line weight for the Trilene knot ranges from 6lb to 15lb.

Also, @scaleface is 100% but in Illinois we use our middle finger to secure the loop.

5-6 for mono or copoly, 6-7 for flouro, 7-8 for braid. Works for me. 😂

So 6 is good, but so is 7, and 5 too but 4, and 8 probably. Did I say 6 yet? I like 5 for mono and 8 with braid, but I hardly ever tie strait braid. Im usually fishing for trout and crappie so I use braid to mono leader.

Exactly the same number of turns and do the same technique with my finger

I use the Trilene knot quite a bit and I’m in the camp of 6 wraps as well.

With YZH I’ve had the trilene slip with 6 wraps so I got 7, but I think it’s just the line itself. No issues with 6 wraps with other lines, like Tatsu or braid.

5 for all lines
