On Deck Rod Organization

Featured Replies

I'm watching the Guntersville Tournament, and notice Bryan Schmitt has an organizational system on deck which keeps his rods separated and tangle free. Do any of you know if this is a commercially marketed product, or something of his own making?

I haven't watched any of it yet, but there is a commercially avalable system out there. I think it might have been posted here on the forum about 6 months ago. It looks like a foam/plastic block that sits on top of the rod locker lid with long channels cut out for the rods to lay in.

That's the one; I'm going to try to track it down. Thankyou.

David Dudley’s has an interesting tournament boat, it’s a catamaran . It has the “rails “ that the rods sit into. Opens up the front deck as he can actually stand on them. Looks like 5 rods on port and starboard side. Very different than all other bass boats, but I wonder how it handles the waves. I think mfr. is Max Cat or something similar.

I always heard, "messy desk, organized mind - organized desk, dirty mind."

Wonder if that applies to decks, also?

If thats the case im the most organized fisherman alive!

I got to tell you every time I watch a fishing video with all the rods scattered on the front deck I cringe. Then I watch to see how many times the rods get stepped on.

I keep a pretty tight ship on the boat, especially since it’s a smaller boat with not a ton of room. I definitely have a very dirty mind. Organized, but dirty…

It can get smaller.

Looking further, David Dudley is also using the Dex Organizer; I'm definitely interested. Googled David Dudley's Boat.

throwing you a bone - if you note on the left, though, rod tips are still exposed to step on and break.

Thankyou Bulldog, those are better photos than I was able to find. Naturally, I'm going to approach this slowly, but the first thing I notice is that his boat is single console, which leaves the left side rod tips endangered, but not on the right. My boat is double console, which may alleviate that situation. The Dex Organizer website shows the units do not need to be purchased as a pair, and also come in different sizes. Thanks again, your input should be helpful to others who may have a sparked interest in this product. I also notice there are no spinning rods on display, and they need more space than bait casters.

I have been following this thread. My boat is a dual console and my rods are 7-7’6”. I am not sure they would fit.

Most of my rods are also 7-7'6"-7'11"; I am probably going to purchase a unit for only one side to see how that works out before considering a second one.

I am interested in seeing what you get and how it fits. So please post some pics when you get it installed.

I really like that he can open that locker under the rods. That is one of my biggest problems. Rod locker goes down the port side and I always have a number of rods on top. Keeps me from going in there sometimes, even when I think maybe I should grab another.

I don't see any pics with spinning rods. Wonder how (if) the bigger reels and guides will work

I did notice that, although the product details indicate it can be glued down over carpet, in all the advertisement photos I've seen, the product was glued down to a bare metal deck. And then the rest of the deck was covered with what looks like that Dek-It covering.

Not sure what the deal is with that.

Very interesting and something I'm going to take a look at. I try to keep the front of my boat clear of clutter and usually only have rods on one side of the boat. I'm considering getting a Bac Rac rod holder to put on the port side of my deck by the coangler's seat so I can slide my rods down a couple feet giving me the total width of the front of my boat to stand. It is secured when you close the lid on it. I can probably put it on the starboard side as well. They said I could order one.

I have one of the original Bac Racs. I bought it to use in other people’s boats. It has been a very good tool for me.

Thanks for posting this...I think. My initial reaction was that I need a Version 2 immediately. That seems like it would really open up my deck. Upon further review, however, I'm thinking about how often I drop to my knees or even lay down to lip bigger fish. I'm wondering if this would create landing difficulty during "finesse season". Nothing is perfect, right?

The biggest issue I have is my partner’s rod tips sometimes get in the way if a good fish makes it to the back of the boat.
