Dobyns Fury worth it now?

Featured Replies

I own a couple of Furys but I'm not sure that they are worth their now 150 dollar MSRP. I feel like it just makes it easier to step up to the Kaden or Sierra series. The rod seems to be in no man's land now regarding price to performance. Any thoughts?

Huge Dobyns guy here and I agree. I’ve honestly only used the fury a few times, but for the price I think the Kaden an amazing rod. And never do I pay full price. I’ve bought all my rods on sale or even used. You can find used Kadens all day for $140. And they come in a pretty good line of different actions, especially having the crankbait models. I love those.

I’m going to say no. When it was $109.00 it was a great value. With no upgrades it has fallen behind. For another fifty bucks, there are a number of rods that have a lighter, more sensitive blank and Fuji guides. When the new upgraded Megabass Lavante comes out, it’s going to shake things up. An Edge Delta series for me is great and I expect another deep discount special around May 11th. You can’t be stagnant in this industry. JMO

I’ve never fished one. But we were at scheels today and they started carrying Dobyns. I picked up a fury for the first time. Really nice rods. But I’m not sure worth $150. I’m a huge falcon fan and love my lowriders and I kinda feel the same since they jumped to $150. At that point you might as well step up to a $200 class rod if ya are going for something nice. I always tried to stay around $100-120. Now it’s either spend a lot or there’s still some nice rods in that $80-100 class.

IMO - nope. Black Bass from St Croix is just a little more in cost but way better IMO.

I almost feel like this was a move by GSM to hurt Dobyns sales to bolster something else. The Fury was Dobyns bread and butter.

I admit I haven't been buying as many rods lately, or really even paying attention to them, other than to question this...

Haven't pretty much all the options gone up in price about equally? I know what used to be a $139 St Croix Mojo is now a $180 St. Croix Mojo. What used to be a $119 Falcon Lowrider is now $149 at most places.

That would tell me that it is all pretty relative and the value comparison between the options is about the same as it was.

Don't get me wrong... I've had Fury rods before and liked them, but have gotten rid of most as I have moved on to other options. I think I have three left,... 2 705cb and a 703c.

Pricewise though... I'm of the opinion that everything has gone up in price lately, so things are still pretty comparable. You can't really say you might as well step up to the Sierra or Kaden because those are now $190 -$200.

Same approximate $40-$50 price jump from Fury to them as it was when they were cheaper.

Not all rods went up. And some went up different amounts. For example, Cashion redid the element and the new element z2 is a great rod for $130. I would pick it over a fury for $20 less.

I'd agree with everyone else. I have two, use them a lot and like them, but I won't be getting more at their current price. I think St Croix BassX is comparable/cheaper and SC Black bass is better. Probably others that are in that $125ish range that would be a step up from the fury.

A few years ago, a Fury was priced around $109 and the Sierra at $159, and it's a still a pretty big jump in quality from a Fury to a Sierra. I could argue it was worth it to just go with a Sierra then, but the $109 Fury was still great if you're looking for a rod for something you know you won't use regularly, maybe a second flipping rod for that one super weedy pond you fish twice a year, or something like that.

Now that they're $149-159, I'd either go with a Sierra or a Kaden or another brand entirely. I mean, a Daiwa Tatula or St Croix Mojo Bass at $175 is worth the extra $24 and then some...

All rod prices have gone up in recent years, but it's not been friendly to the Fury.

I bought a ML Fury last year after breaking a St Croix Premier. Went with the Fury after getting a Sierra the year before. If I had it to do over I’d buy the Sierra, it’s well worth the extra $, not crazy about the Fury.

The fury 705 cb is or at least was the best selling rod across all Dobys lines. I think it's still worth $ 150 given what else is out there in that range. I wouldn't buy a one for a draggin' rod however.

It seems like GSM is pushing Phenix more these days and leaving Dobyns to flounder .

There's a handful of rods I's take over Fury around that price point.

Ark Tharp Series- $140

Ark Invoker Tour- $160

Daiwa Tatula XT- $100

Falcon Lowrider- $150

Phenix Feather- different prices depending on model

Level Fishing NGX- $170

I've heard good things about the Cashion Element Z2 and the Shimano Intenza.

I have been using the Fury 705 cb lately. I don't know about the other rods but the 705 cb is the best crankbait rod out there for the money. To me it is worth the $150, maybe more. It beat out my Daiwa Tatula Randy Howell rod and that is saying a lot.

Sadly, I feel like a lot of guys try a fury or maverick even and make their judgement of Dobyns based on those lines. I know not everyone can afford expensive rods, and this top revolves around the fury, but as you move up the lines of rod they become exponentially better imo. If you can get your hands on an extreme hp…..now you’re really talking about a professional level rod. I know of a lot of guys who have left the Loomis nrx line and switched to HP and xstacy lines, stating that the nrx is significantly lighter, but that the high end Dobyns are significantly better balanced. I still think the Kaden is the best bargain and again, you can find a lightly used one all day for $140. I own the 711sf, 610-4, 744, 745, 734cb, and 735cb and like em all. I have some champs I like. But the champ hp is another level. I have a 745 and 746 that I never wanna put down. Going forward, I’ll pay the extra every time to get the better line. That said, I now have acquired 3 xstacys over winter. So I’m guessing I’ll be spoiled forever after using those.
