Is a Dobyns Sierra a upgrade from a Daiwa Tatula XT?

Featured Replies

I have a Sierra that I broke in 2021 and didn’t know about the life time warranty. And I love my Daiwa, but was curious how the Sierra compares to it.

I have never owned a sierra. Based on owning the Dobyns kaden for a while and feeling the tatula xt in store, it is a step up. The tatula xt is a lower price point for sure.

By the way, the tatula xt is still a good rod for the price for sure

My Sierra 693 is the most used rod in the rod locker, it's been a great rod.

I have a Sierra 683 casting rod that I’ve used for single hook presentations, mostly using T rigs on it.

I’ve had mine paired up with a curado 50e, and I’m used it for about 5 years.

I’ve used this rod a ton and it’s become my go to and absolute favorite. The sensitivity is great, I will say the sensitivity on my Dobyns xtasy rod is a bit better, but that’s a higher priced point rod.

It’s a light weight rod as well, I’ve fished 9 or 10 hours with it and it felt light as a feather.

Durability is great, I don’t baby my equipment and it’s held up.

Anymore questions about it, feel free to ask or send me a message.

I haven’t used a daiwa rod so I cannot compare.

Haven't used either series but have other series rods in each brand. I'd be seriously ticked off if the Sierra at about $100 more wasn't a significantly better rod.

As far as rod quality is concerned, the Sierra is more on par with the Tatula than the Tatula XT. The Sierra line is known to have more tip (as in the fast rods are more moderate fast than fast) compared to the rest of the Dobyns line where the Kaden runs a bit faster, but having gotten my hands on rods from both lines, I do think the Sierra is a little more sensitive than the Kaden which is roughly the same price point.

I'm not sure what you're looking to throw here, but the Sierra 703C which they call a MH/F is really a fantastic all purpose medium rod and in my opinion is the standout in the series due to the perfect blend of power and tip for most things you would throw on a medium rod in a variety of situations.

The regular Tatula line is also worth a look.

I lose track of all the different versions of Tatula rods so hard for me to say how they compare. I've got a Tatula cranking rod that's black and a skipping jig rod that's silver.

Is the XT the silver ones and the regular Tatula the black ones?

Anyways... I do have a few different Sierras and I like them. Obviously a significant step up from the Fury! I also like them better than the Kadens. I had a couple Kadens and traded both of them off.

I still have a Sierra 682c that I like for small topwater poppers. I've got a 734c that I believe has a buzzbait on it now, and I think I still have a 733c set up for paddletail swimmers.

I like them!! Better than the black and the silver Tatulas I have

I fish more Sierras than any other rods and the previous comments are spot on. They run a bit soft in the tip, which I happen to like, especially for moving baits. I also have an XT or two. They're fine, but the Sierras are much preferred.

The SA734C is a great moving bait rod. Very versatile with 40# braid (to leader in some cases).

Topwater (buzzbait, walking baits, ploppers), bladed jigs, spinnerbaits, paddletails, lipless cranks. Heck, even frogs in sparse cover/open water. Toads like the Stanley Ribbit (now made by Frog Factory). Running weedless Gambler Big EZ through pads. I've put this rod through the paces over the years.

I did try out the Tatula XT when it came out. Very nice rods for that price point. I had the 7' MH/F. It was definitely on the stiffer side of fast IMO. I was gonna check out the M/F but never did, and ended up giving it to a friend.

Daiwa makes a nice rod but they have a design flaw. Casting rods run 8 guides and every model I’ve owned had spots that the line came into contact with the blank under stress. All my Dobyns run 9 guides and no line contact. Better balance makes the Sierra an upgrade.

Sierra in my opinion is a better rod and better looking as well. The 734 in particular is a great versatile rod I'd recommend to anyone.
