Do you find it useful or unnecessary to carry a dedicated spinnerbait/bladed jig setup?

Featured Replies

I have 1 rod dedicated to 3/8-3/4oz chatterbaits and Spinnerbaits...

A Dobyns Champion XP 736CB Glass pared with a Shimano Scorpion DC or Curado M depending on conditions.

Were I in your shoes, I’d take a look at the Dobyns DC 734C. It’s the utilitarian stick in my locker. Have thrown both spinnerbaits and chatterbaits on it and caught many fish. I have a dedicated bladed jig rod, but like you only have so much room in the kayak. If I don’t want to eat up one of my rod holders with my bladed jig stick but might throw one, having the 734 onboard gives me the option. Great with spinnerbaits as well.

Yeah, I’ve been looking at that Rod for a while, sounds like the do everything. What is your dedicated bladed jig Rod?

734 definitely does a lot.

For chatterbaits, same as @LGDFW . 736CB Glass.

I have as many as 18 rods on my boat at a time. (8, if in kayak.)

But only two are really dedicated to single presentation.

That said, I have one that excels at chatterbaits (for me.) Just so happens that it also excels for 4" flutter spoons. Never tried a spinnerbait on it, but I suppose it would be fine for 3/8 spinnerbaits; probably underpowered for 1/2, which is what I usually throw.

I carry 2 dedicated spinnerbait rods on the boat - Identical BPS 7’ MH Tourney Special rods, one with a 7.5 Carbonlite reel, the other with a 6.6 Tourney Special, both spooled with 15lb mono.

I’ve found these to be perfect for the 3/8 and 1/2 oz ‘baits I typically throw, and have a great backbone for pulling them out of the trees.

I fish out of a kayak and bring four rods. I fish my spinnerbaits and bladed jigs with a 7.5 foot M/H fast. I also use this rod form some crankbaits, buzzbaits, larger topwaters, and soft swimbaits. It may not be ideal for any of these lures, but I manage to catch some bass on it, and I don't like bring more than four rods.

I have room in the boat for dedicated set ups for each. The rods I use are different materials and actions.

I don't know, probably just age. When we're young we want every lure in the store, get a bag big enough to carry them all, then all the rods to cast everything. Then we get old, realize we don't want to carry all of that stuff then come to the conclusion we only used 3 lures anyhow and we can probably cast all three on one rod.

My best days on the water usually end with 2 rods out and maybe 3 baits to put away.

One the one hand, I wish I could start from scratch and simplify my arsenal. I don't fish 90% of my baits 90% of the time. I could carry everything I usually fish in just a small backpack at this point. But there's something to be said about the journey along the way. I know what I like, why I like it, and when I like to use it. But would I know all of that if I hadn't experimented and tried a bunch of things first? Probably not.

Good luck on your search, unfortunately I will be of no help. I have setups for every technique and in some cases multiple rods for the same technique. I don’t like to retie. 😂

If the conditions are right then I use the same MH/F rod for both spinnerbaits and bladed jigs, depending on what the bass want.

Is there any room left for you and the fish or do one of you have to ride in the little rubber dinghy?

I do have multiple rods for spinnerbait depending on weight and one bladed jig rod . being that your limited on space, I'd probably err on the side of one heavier rod to cover all like a 7' to 7'4" medium heavy fast or heavy fast.

As the gentleman above me mentioned, the 734c is a very serviceable all around stick. Anything in that rating class should have you pretty well covered

To be honest, I have drastically cut back. I have rigged my gear more to the body of water and my personal strengths. For example, I am heading out to the Rappahonock River this weekend and will rig a weighted Senko, dropshot, swimbait, Ned and crankbait. My tackle bag contains all the different colors and terminal tackle and some of what I call “what if” baits. 😂
