Going from a bass boat to a kayak has been interesting, but it serves a lot of my current needs. I have had to pare down my number of rods (30+) to about a dozen - I can only take 8 with me on the water in a kayak. During that narrowing down process, I have come to really appreciate certain rods that are just so versatile. I can take them out and cover so many techniques if needed.

My number 1 rod that does so much is the ALX ZOLO Toadface. It's a 7'2" that is MH in the tip and Heavy in the butt section. Unique taper, and very light, sensitive and well-balanced for a rod on the heavier action side. In fact, I sold a half dozen St. Croix Rods in LTB and AvidX because this seemed so heavy and tip-weighted after using the Toadface. Yet the Toadface is just as powerful.

Here are the techniques that I have used this rod for - probably why I have 2 of them and could almost justify a 3rd:

The only limitation is it’s 7’6 and I’m in a kayak. Get used to the length and the weight isn’t a problem. It weighs roughly what my NRX+ 852s does. It really throws 1/4 to 3/4 without issue. The tip is all medium light and then it slams into a serious medium backbone. I’d feel totally comfortable putting straight braid and power fishing it if I could only bring a single rod.

This is a pretty easy one to answer. Mojo Bass 6'8" MXF spinning rod. If I'm going out fishing with 1 rod this is it.

If I have to pick one, it will be Daiwa Heartland Hayate 74MH AGS. Super versatile, has the right length and taper and never get tired of looking at it.

7 foot Point Blank built with Fuji KLH guides down to size 4 runners. It's called Medium Light power, fast action. It's on the fast side of fast, but not what I would call XFast. The power is about CCS 20 ERN, which is higher than the St Croix Legend 70MF at about 17 ERN. It has one of the highest True Natural Frequency numbers I've ever tested which is consistent with how crisp, clean, and fast it is in recovery from deflection. It is a very versatile rod which I've used for just about everything in its casting weight range-Neds, drop shot, cranks, surface, swim baits, tubes, creatures. I have built four, two for me, one for my son, and one for a good friend. It is universally loved.

Daiwa Tatula XT 6'10 MH-R, 1/4 - 1oz.

Followed by a Daiwa Tatula XT 6'8" L-F, 1/32-1/4oz.

Those two cover a whole lot of ground.

Picked up a two piece spinning rod to keep in the back of my car...just in case I need to wet a line over lunch, or after work : )

It's a Fenwick Eagle XFS-2, 6'-6", medium power, 6-12 lb, 1/8-3/8oz. Mated with a Shimano Miravel MIR2500HG reel. Pretty good all around set up.

OP, I have that rod as well. I read that Alex keeps 5 of them on his boat. I think the Expert Headturner will become another of my favorites.

Falcon cara head turner. I could throw just about anything on it from 1/4-7/8 oz and be happy.

Megabass Orochi X10 Bandersnatch. It has a very unique action. I have it matched with a ZPI Tatula 100.

I’ve fished the following: unweighted soft plastics like senkos and flukes, jigs 3-16-3/8oz, Texas rigs, free rigs, horny roads, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and Chatterbaits, mid diving and lipless Crankbaits.

I just purchased the Falcon Expert Headturner and it’s a strong contender to usurp the Daiwa on this list…time will tell.

For spinning a 6'8"-7'0" MLF(XF) rod for BC a 7'0"-7'3" MHF. I'm primarily a SC rod guy but have expanded my list the last few years. I keep a Shimano Convergence 7'0" 2-piece spinning rod w/a 2500 Daiwa Regal in the back seat of the truck for travel.
