Lets say hypothetically you could only take out one spinning set up and one casting..what would it be? line size? rod length? Don't say depends on where I'm fishing...KVD pulls up says grab a spinner and a caster....which 2 you gettin??

Baitcaster - Shimano Curado E5; Shimano 7' crucial MH rod; 12-pound fluorocarbon line.

Spinning Rig - Shimano 2500 Stradic MgFB or the FI; Shimano 6'8" Cumara MH rod; 8-pound Yo-Zuri Hybird line. 

Now, with that said, any good rod and reel will do.

Think about the baits you will be throwing and go with mono for treble hook baits and flouro for everything else.

If you are going to skip docks and under cover, go with a 6'6" spinning rod.

BPS and Cabella's rods are fine. As are the other brands so don't get caught up in a high end brand name unless you feel more comfortable with the Kistlers and G. Loomis rods, etc.

Just grab one of each type of rod; put your reel on it; and go fishing and don't worry about it.

Yep, if you get the ultrasoft, more managable that the plain hybrid imho.

Generally, all brands aside, I would bring these:

7' MH/F casting. 15-17 lb. fluoro.

7' M/F spinning. 15-20 lb. braid with an 8 lb. fluoro. leader.

I can fish just about everything I own effectively with these two setups, aside from hollow-body frogs fished in heavy pads.
