I got the new model Shimano Engetsu 101HG. This is a JDM Curado 70 that is on steroids! Micromodular brass gears, clicking drag, 102mm handle with oversized knobs.

I'm understanding that the spool is heavier than the 70 even though it's shallower.  Let us know how it casts.

My scales are saying that the stock spool is 16g with the foil sticker still on it. So I'm guessing it will be around 14-15g with that sticker off.

Have you taken it out on the water yet? I'm interested in getting one so all the info helps.

I haven't yet. Having a newborn has really cut into my time on the water this spring.

I did spool it up with some 15lb. Tatsu on Friday night, hoping I could get out Saturday. But alas, no luck.

Congratulations man!!! :) that's a bitter sweet kinda thing but at least now you'll have someone to mold into a great person and angler!

Nothing but Ol' OG Zillion (6.3.1) :)

How would you compare these reels to the newer Daiwas?

Probably the best platform Daiwa has ever created.  They were made in Japan, brass gears, tons of modifying parts, and tough/durable/smooth.

Very limited on drop in spool options. Tdz would be #1 for most people. I much prefer the new SV103 over the og zillion. Shares many of the same internal parts and frame but you get the 34mm spool. My J dream was nice but that’s from a collector standpoint. The og is still a great reel and still loved by many. It was my first quality Daiwa reel purchase.

Exactly why I got that :)

My Zillion 7.1.1 and Dobyns 704C is so sick for the lipless cranks.

I can bomb that out like no tomorrow with 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 rattle traps.

Yes that (spool options) was the only caveat.  But that is why I have so many SV103s...?

Of that platform currently I have:

2 NIB Ito 103s

1 NIB TD-Z Type R

1 TD-Z Type R+

1 TD-Z/Ito Custom Hybrid 105H

2 TD-Z 105H

1 LNIB Fuego 100H

1 Zillion 103SHA

1 LNIB Zillion 50th Anniversary 100SHA

1 LNIB Megabass IP68

1 LNIB Megabass IP79

1 LNIB J-Dream 7.9

5 SV103H

5 SV103XS

1 TD-X Air Metal 103H

1 TD-X Air Metal 105H

I think that's it.  ?

WOW, nice set you got there.

I only have two of SV103H. I set one of the SV103 with Steez Spool to throw farther :)

They are two different animals - OG Zillions are true reels compare to the SV which I own two of them (SV103H)

Steez sv tw isn’t built like a tank like the og but it’s a better reel in terms of ergonomics and styling. It’s alao better for anything under 1/2oz. The og zillion has a heavy and deep spool that makes it a better choice for heavy duty applications. As for the og zillion being a true reel compared to the 103... well that’s mildly entertaining considering they’re built on the same frame and share a lot of the same internal parts. The sv103 is heavily braked but a simple spool swap to any of the 20 options available and you can make it do anything you want it to.

I need one of those ct type-r's.  Love that red and black paint.

I have one and it's an amazing reel! Only problem is that the paint scratches sooo easily.
