Exotic meats

Featured Replies

I was wondering if any of you have ordered exotic meats from an online store. I would like to get some elk, bison, kangaroo, and maybe a few other meats.

What site did you use?

What did you get?

How was it?

Any meats you suggest?

I've had bison and ostrich, I'll take kobi beef any day of the week.

Well, besides the regular meats ( pork, chicken, beef, turkey ) we can get bison, ostrich, frog at the super market, the more exotic ( armadillo, squirrel, rattle snake, turtle, venison ), uhhh, you gotta catch them on your own !   :)

I believe Burley dabbles in the exotic meat market...

From what I understand, he has sampled quite a few.

I had Ostrich, it was pretty good.

but the guy who takes bison or ostrich any day of the week will probably live many more weeks to enjoy them... ;D

Kobe beef is delicious, but sometimes ya gotta eat something leaner.

here is a sampling  Squirrel, rabbit, deer, elk, moose, bear, bison, shark, swordfish to list a few.  That's not counting the common stuff.

My sisters in laws raise bison. It is delicious. I prefer elk to beef any day of the week. I have never ordered from an online store though.

I had an elk burger at a diner in Sevierville. Pretty darn good. Never order online, either. If Omaha Steak company has them online, then they are good company buy from. Only thing about Omaha is that they won't stop calling my house once a week. >:(

Elk is the only meat I have every eaten that

tastes better than beef.

Humans are made to consume  fat. Cut back on the grains and simple sugars and you can start eating more delicious fatty meat and be a lot healthier.

Exotic Meats I've eaten:

A bunch of exotic fish

bison

rabbit

Probably some more but I forget that kind of stuff.

Although I have never eaten big cats, I have

been told that lion meat is delicious. Anyone

have any experience with this meat?

Bottom line: eating red meat everyday is not healthy.

Raul is pretty close to right here.... If you want to eat it, you gotta catch it.

There is quite a shortage of armadillo up in this neck of the woods, but I've had the normal squirrel, rabbit, venison.  Bear Meat is good if cooked right.  Elk, and Caribou are tasty, but I wasn't too fond of Antelope.  If you get the chance, Raccoon, Muskrat, Beaver, and Porcupine are all interesting.

I've never tried an on-line store, but i do know of a couple of local game ranches that run retail meat markets.  You might want to look in your area for one or more of those type outlets.

Both times I have had mountain lion, it was nasty. Pretty much across the board, predatory mammals are nasty eating.

One of my favorite meats is fresh tenderloin off of a Yukon Moose but by far the best meat I have ever had was Wild Hawaiian Hog. They feed on wild fruit year round and their meat is out of this world when it's fresh.

As for strange meats.

Dog - Not to bad with plenty of sauce. Had it at a Korean restaurant.

Cat - Pretty good as a burger.

Camel - Tastes like old goat.

Caribou - Not to bad kinda half way between elk and whitetail deer.

Antelope - Well, it's a goat.

Bear - Greasy and smells bad. I'll never eat it again.

Red Stag - About like elk

X2 on the bear. Even in sausage form it grosses me out.

If you're going to eat bear, you've got to bone it all out, and remove 100% of the fat and tendon.  Every bit of it is hand work with a knife.

And make sure you cook it well done.  I'll butcher the spelling of it without spellcheck, but those critters are famous for triganosis.

I have had both bald eagle and unicorn. They are both delicious.

i used to get ostrich steaks from BJ's wholesale store, along with bison burgers. they stopped carrying ostrich (which was delicious btw) and i stopped getting bison because i got tired of it. it is pretty good though. i got some alligator tail from Annapolis Seafood Market. tasted like fish.
