Does a name make you buy or not buy a certain brand?

Recommended Posts

I'm questioning this because someone posted something about not using a certain product because Roland Martin uses it.  Does anyone else do this??

I was reluctant to use YUM products for years because of Bill Dance.  I tried YUM because of the Papi----Now, I use almost all of there styles of plastics and have a ton of confidence in there product.

Just curious how much this determines what you use or don't.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I normally try and stay away from all the "big" name people and baits and look for something different.  For instance, if KVD says use sexy shad color strike king cranks, I dont just becasue I know about a billion fisherman are going to be throwing it and I want something different.  not saying that they dont work, but I like the undr-the-radar stuff. 8-)

Personalities don't influence my purchase either way.  If something works, I wouldn't avoid it because Bill Dance gets paid to push it, nor would I buy everything he hawks either.

I put a good deal of stock in what fellow fishermen say on here.

I'll also give some consideration to the reviews found on the online catalogs.

I'll confess, I'm somewhat of an impulse buyer when it comes to trying a new (to me) lure.  It has to look good to me, unless I've read reliable recommendations for a lure.

When it comes to Bill Dance, or any of the other noted show hosts, they'd have success with lures I'd get skunked trying to use.

On the other hand, in some of the places they fish, you could put a long shanked hook through a wine bottle cork, glue on a seagull feather and pull 'em in, one after another.

The brand of the product matters much more to me than whoever endorses it. For example, I will never buy anything from Shakespeare, even if (for some reason) KVD endorsed it.

Yes, I am VERY brand loyal and will only buy new baits/lures

that are highly recommended by people I know or trust. I never buy

anything on impulse and never fish anything "new" but untested.

Examples of "cutting edge" baits would be the GYCB Senko, Fat Ika,

Kreature, Kut-Tail and Swimming Senko. I fished these baits when

they were brand new based on "trusted recommendations" and later

the GYCB reputation. I was among the "first on my block" to fish X-

Raps, Sammys and Pointers.

I purchase a bait the first time based on the qualities I am looking for. If it performs as expected then I will purchase more and stay with it until it fails my expectations. If one does fail to perform, I don't give that brand a second chance to fail.

I trust the guys on here more anyday then someone that gets paid by the industry.

If I ask someone on here if brand x is good or bad here I will get an honest opinion.  If I ask KVD if his line conditioner is good what do you think the answer will be.  Even if it was/is not good.

Absolutely, positively, totally, completely, NO.  Brands don't mean a thing to me except for rods and reels.

My problem is that many of the TV pros are not brand loyal (well most of them) so its hard to believe anything they say. One year they are sponsored by company A and then by company B the next year. When they switch it has nothing to do with the product except for the paycheck they receive from them. When you hear them talk its a different story or this bait is the best because...

This is why I find my own tackle to use and listen to other friends that I trust. Bass fisherman are liars and will not let everyone know exactly what they use. Who can say that the crank we see someone using on TV is really the same as what you and I purchase on the rack? Is that worm color one that we can buy or is it a "pro staff only" color.  The companies I have complete faith in and not affiliated with are as follows:

Huddleston

3:16 Lure Company

GYCB

Roboworm

Open Water Custom Tackle

Owner

Mustad

Seaguar

Sunline

Izorline

Norman

Pradco/Bomber (Fat Free Shad only)

Lucky Craft

Reaction Innovations

Megastrike

Boze (Sumo frogs)

I can't go wrong with any of these products no matter who endorses them  ;) I use their products a lot and have never ever been let down. I even cashed a check or two in tournaments because of them.

As far as baits and soft plastics are concerned, no. I have kept my BPS and Cabela's master fishing catalogs for the past ten years or so. I like to look back at the products of the major bait companies, and see which 'new, best ever, most fish catchingest' baits have gone the way of the dodo.

Every year reputable tackle makers release a few new baits, or a new line. Some are winners, a lot are losers.

I will only buy a new product based on my friends inputs.      I know these guys and have confidence in their sticks and know they don't make a living selling baits, they work for a living.

Why do you think this Forum is known as one of the best?

That's cool. Another way to look at it is to see how many baits survived over the years, like tubes for instance. Remember when they were THE must have bait ? Now it seems mostly the smallmouth guys use them.

Opps.

Like Gman said he trust the guys on here that have used a product.

Now, I agree with him and having a second thought to give MegaStrike a stab base on what lot of folks here commented with good results (new version is still in question)

Image of R. Martin plastered all over on that site is like a sore thumb. ;)

No offense Bobby.

If I find alot of the products of a specific brand to work well, and all in all like them, then yes, I'll be more likely to buy more of their products. Although I do not buy a product simply because its a brand I like, it has to look good to me, and be what I am looking for, or interested in at the time.

The main thing that gets me to buy products, especially higher priced products, is reviews and credibility which I hear from other people

I am not brand loyal to any great extent.  I like trying different things.  But I am more likely to try something new from a company that has consistently produced quality and high performing lures without a recommendation from someone than I am from a company I am unfamilar with or had bad experiences with.   But if a bait it too unorthodox, I won't try it at all no matter who makes it unless it gets tested over time and becomes recommended (then, its no longer as unorthodox  ;)).

I don't think KVD or any other pro has had an influence on my purchases. If I think it looks intresting I usually buy one of it to test out. If it produces but not to the standard of some other baits that I already have, they get a back seat. However, if I just hammer the fish a few trips after the purchase than I'll stock up. I am brand loyal as well however, I use alot of generic plastics to save some $. Product Lines I trust are:

Storm/Rapala

P-Line

Trilene

Heddon

Berkley

Falcon Rods

Shimano

Power Pro

I also make alot of my own tackle such as jigs b/c I haven't found a current product out there with features I want such as a certain hook or a thicker weedguard ect..

I'm more apt to try a soft plastic from someone new to me, but I've been burnt on hard baits.

I don't know why,but I have never cared what people are using.

I have always bought Rapala crank baits.

Zoom for plastics.

Spinner baits vary on blades and colors, nothing else.

What I have been doing works for me.

When it comes to higher dollar purchases, I am very brand loyal.

Stuff like hooks, lures, tackle boxes, and etc I'll give it a shot anytime of the week as long as it get good reviews from good/weekend type anglers.
