Advice on selecting new spinning rod
I have the previous version of this rod and it's one of the best all around spinning rods I've ever owned. I've heard nothing but good things about the new version so I'm assuming it's at least as good and probably even better than the rod I own.

Are F-150s Good Trucks?
I had an '06 F-150 with the 5.4. 2 of my friends had similar year trucks with the same engine, both had a laundry list of issues that popped up right after the truck hit 100k. Told myself it wasn't going to be me. At 102k miles, my truck started missing (spark plugs), and the transmission started slipping. Ford dealership told me for every spark plug that snapped while they were changing them, it was $75 on up depending on how much work it took to get it out. Sounded like a quick way for the dealership to make a grand off me. Transmission was obviously going to be expensive, and the dealership said there was another major part that almost always fails after a new transmission was put on, that was another couple thousand dollars. So I was looking at upwards of 10k in repairs, for a truck that was barely worth that much, and that's why I now drive a Toyota Tundra.

Good soft plastic colors = good jig skirt colors
I've had decent luck on baitfish colored jigs but I rarely fish them. You can always get custom poured baits to use as trailers, or mix and match. Your trailer doesn't have to match your jig to be effective.

Shimanos
The 70 is a sweet little reel. I fish mine with 15lb fluoro and have no issues with line capacity, and I've had fish push it way beyond anything a bass will ever be able to do.

Gonna flip till I can't flip no mo!
I love flipping and pitching, but it's not nearly as effective this time of year for me. The water cools down, the fish back off the banks, and they also focus much more on baitfish like shad than they do craws. All this adds up to a better bite on moving baits or at the very least casting jigs or plastics.

Latest Tackle Purchase Thread (Bait Monkey Victim Support Group)
Some new stuff I paid for. and some new stuff that some nice people decided to leave in the trees for me at LOZ. A Lucky Craft Kelly J prop bait, a 130 Whopper Plopper, a custom painted 1.5 squarebill, and the biggest prize, a Pre-Rapala Suspending Wiggle Wart. E

Where are the deer hunters at?
For the 3rd time this season, I had what would have been my largest buck I've ever taken walk just out of range. At one point he was within range, but quartering away from me at more of an angle than I was comfortable with so I watched him walk away and hop the fence. I didn't want to hit guts and ruin or possibly even lose a good deer.

Ideal punching/frogging rod under $130
I use 2 different rods for the techniques you listed but I've used my frogging rod for punching and it did pretty well. I use a 7' 3" H/F Ethos Micro from Academy for frogging. It's $80 full price but can be had much cheaper when they go on sale.

Good soft plastic colors = good jig skirt colors
I've never seen fishingskirts have a sale but I order in bulk all the time so I always get the bulk order discount anyways. As for your original question, yes, I've had good success with jig skirts in colors that are also good soft plastic colors, then I've also had massive failures. Green pumpkin/red flake has always been a good plastic color, and it's proven to be a great jig color. The same goes for junebug and Okeechobee craw. Redbug, however, great soft plastic color, can't catch a cold with a jig in that color.

Does anyone catch catfish regularly on hard lures?
I used to occasionally target flatheads with deep diving crankbaits by fishing them very slowly through riprap on dams. I've caught catfish on every kind of bait I've fished and it's not at all surprising anymore. I caught my PB flathead this spring on a finesse jig and I catch dozens and dozens of channel cats on bladed jigs every year. I always catch some on jerkbaits and all variations of hard cranks, and even topwater. I've caught several cats on poppers, lots of them on buzzbaits, and even a couple on hollow bodied frogs through grass mats, which are almost scary, aggressive strikes. Catfish are extremely sensitive to vibrations. Their poor eyesight is basically a non-factor because they're so good at finding prey in the turbid conditions they so often reside in by following vibrations and their sense of smell (catfish's bodies are covered with taste buds, so when you grab one, they're tasting you).

best big game reel/rod on a budget?
Going to depend a lot on the size of the fish you're targeting. I fish for those species mostly with a 7' MH Ugly Stick lite, Okuma Avenger 30 baitfeeder, and 20lb braid. I've landed blue cats up to 30 pounds with it so it will handle any channel, carp, or gar you're going to encounter.

Big Fish
This wasn't even close to a PB, although it was a pretty impressive fish on a Ned rig and ML spinning rod.

Latest Catch Pics Thread
Had my first ever double on the Rig this past Sunday during a tournament, and they were both keepers. Unfortunately, they were also both white bass If I'd managed a double like that on it, we'd have been in the money.

Feburary
Don't you have some power plant lakes in that area? We get lots of out of state guys trying to fight off cabin fever that come to the power plant lakes around here. I see a lot of Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois tags anytime I make a rare weekend trip.
