  1. I'm guessing this is supposed to be the warmest part of the lake in early spring?
  2. LOL. This is Maryland, not California. I don't have a big loud swimbait so i guess i'll have to go with the nightcrawlers ;D
  3. Can you guys help me out with a plan of attack for a new lake? The Scenario: Going to Clopper Lake on March 18 in Maryland 90 acre man-made reservoir visible cover: one large boat dock, lots of laydowns cuz of beavers, a stretch of riprap next to a road not sure what the water temp will be fishing out of a 13' kayak (which i often stand in) with 36 lb thrust motor and depthfinder. I plan on fishing the deep ends of laydowns, and hopefully finding somekind of dropoffs or structure to fish. I don't think it will be warm enough for the fish to be shallow yet. In terms of lures, techniques and areas to look for, what should i do?
  4. This is basically the mono version of vanish transition (line is colored in air but clear under water). I read about this new line a month ago, but can't seem to find any info on it, other than that berkley is coming out with it soon. Anyone know when it will be available?
  5. not sure if the guide owns the company. this trip is actually for a college fishing club. We have some funding from the school for the trip, but I don't think he can expect us to tip him that well since we're just broke college kids, but I think we will give him at least $70 tip. I'd love to hear more input though. It would be great if our group and the guide mutually enjoy the trip so much that it becomes an annual or bi-annual trip for the guide and the club.
  6. Trying to set up a charter trip for 6 on a finger lake for salmon and trout jigging with the possibility of catching bass too. Have never led a group of people on a chartered trip before, so I'm not sure how much to pay for a tip. Can you guys help me out with this. The 5 hour trip will cost $485 total. I'm guessing $50 minimum tip.
  7. thanks guys. i haven't looked at the pflueger ones yet
  8. Hey guys, what do you think would be the best all-around spinning combo under $70. I'm thinking of getting 2 new berkley amp rods, and matching them with abu garcia cardinal reels.
  9. I've got a homework assignment for my fish ecology class but i'm having a hard time coming up with some morphological constraints for largemouths. As an example so you know what I'm talking about, the shape of sunfish makes it harder for prey to engulf and swallow but this shape isn't very conducive to fast acceleration or fast cruising like the shape of a pike would be. Largemouth seem to have an all around generalist morphology, so i can't think of any constraints. Any suggestions?
  10. guy on the left looks like brad paisly ;D ;D
  11. I've fished piscataway creek 4 times for a total of about 6 hours...no bass at all, but my friend did catch this on a spinnerbait though lol. i think the creek is pretty much just wood cover and a lot of milfoil. i haven't seen any spadderdock or anything else. a lot of people do well there. it should be great for a jon boat
  12. ft. washington should be good, but you might want to drive down route 210 to Slavins Ramp (no launch fee) in indian head to fish the mattawoman creek no wake zone
  13. I've got a daiwa procaster (nearly 3 years old) that is now less smooth and making a little noise. I'm guessing it could use some reel oil for the first time. I bought some, but my question is where EXACTLY do I put the oil on the reel and how much do I put on. anyone know where I can find a video on this?
  14. Yes you do. Almost all college students are on it.
  15. Bret Hite won two FLW tour events in a row on this style of bait...nuff said
  16. In the most recent bassmater, scott rook said he uses braid for cranking in pretty much every situation, even in clear water. I like it for fishing around vegetation...makes it easier to rip out of grass
  17. I see what you're saying. I don't have much experience with either groups, but i've heard similar stories about how BASS doesn't treat the average angler as well as FLW does. Also, you're right about the equal skill level in FLW and BASS. A lot of FLW guys have the opportunity to fish the elites but don't for different reasons. Still, it's hard to deny the fact that the espn show is much better than FLW, and I think that having "the handful of Elite anglers" each weekend and doing whatever (including losing the co-anglers) necessary to make a good tv show is definitely good for the sport because it helps to grow it. 1. not many people outside of bass fishing are going to take the sport seriously if they see joe grandpa net a big fish for a pro 2. having recognizable pros on tv a lot has always been good for sports. Think Kobe and Shaq playing on Christmas. They're on tv on Dec. 25th instead of the nobody's because people want to watch them, and the sport benefits from the high ratings. 3. taking the coangler out of the elites makes it fair for the pros. if you're a pro and paired up with a coangler who is a local fishing guide who really wants to win some money in the tournament, and another pro is paired up with someone who only wants to watch you and not fish, the other guy has a clear advantage. 4. KVD...KVD...KVD...he's on espn2 almost every other saturday morning. This is 99% why i'd rather watch BASS.
  18. Most productive/Go-To: Tube Favorites: popper and spinnerbait I found that the bigger ones loved a fast spinnerbait (potomac river). I found this out after just trolling it behind my kayak when moving from spot to spot (i rarely do this and never catch anything) but i caught several doing this and then realized that i needed to burn the spinnerbait to catch 'em
  19. I like the elite series better. why? 1. Mark Zona is the man. He jerry mckinnis are better than the flw commentators 2. bigger star power. Kevin Van Dam...nuff said 3. almost half as many anglers compete in the elites, so it's more likely that you'll see one of your fav anglers in the top 12, and this helps the audience to get to know the anglers. 4. no nets 5. no goofy fanny packs 6. The picture quality is better (on my tv at home and at college. other tv's may differ) Do you guys aggree? One thing I like about the flw show is that for some TX's, they have two 1-hour shows. Like the episode they did for the potomac. FLW did a better job of helping out the angler and giving a lot of info about the fishery, more so than the 1 hour BASS show on the potomac.
  20. IMO, coangler netting is a bad idea for FLW for two reasons 1. anyone can be a coangler. So one pro might get the agile, athletic 20 yr old helping net his fish while another pro may have the 60 yr old guy with a bad back in the back of the boat. I think coangler netting just adds more variables and gives unfair advantages and disadvantages 2. It looks awkward and lame on tv! This is one of the reasons why the elite series shows are better than the flw ones
  21. Has anyone used this? I bought this at BPS recently and thought it would be a good idea because of the relatively low braid price, and that it's supposed to be easier to deal with than regular braid. I had some big problems with braid last year when i first used it.
  22. Do companies make transom mount trolling motor extension handles that allow you to turn off/on the motor plus change speeds. For me it's kind of useless if the extension handle doesn't have this capability becuase I would be continuously reaching to change speeds and turn off/on the motor and would not need the extension.
  23. I'm running out of the tubing (keeps the trailer hook from coming loose) that comes in the pack with trailer hooks, but I have plenty of hooks, so I don't want to just buy another pack. What's a good alternative for trailer hook keepers?
  24. LOL. How big were those smallies?
  25. I used some 6 lb. test yo-zuri hybrid ultra soft last summer, and liked it a lot. Now I'm seriously considering buying it in a couple of different lb-tests for both casting and spinning gear, but I have a couple of questions for those of you who use this stuff 1. How does the softness of the line handle on baitcasting gear? 2. The yo zuri website has a chart that says that the lb test rating on the package is lower than its actual strength (for example it says it's 12 lb line is actually 19.5 lb test). Do any of you have experience with their low pound test line being extremely strong? 3. What lb test would you recommend for fishing around grass, sparse lilly pads, shallow wood, all-around tidal potomac river type fishing? I know roadwarrior recommends the 12lb for casting gear
