Backlash results when the spool spins so fast that line being pulled by the lure cannot keep up....the line pays out faster than the lure can keep it taut. Smooth casts are the key to not over-revving your spool. Casts into the wind are problematic because the lure slows, but the spool doesn't. For me, I have more problems with overhead casts, too. I just have a slightly greater chance of whipping it too hard overhead. I am generally much smoother with a sidearm or roll cast. I guess the discussion about loading up, is another way of saying that you need to get the lure out in front actually pulling out line...or at least keeping up with the rate the spool is spitting it out

Fascinating range of answers. I'm not too surprised, however. I've thrown senkos on $25 ML spinning rods....all the way up to a $350 7'4 HF BC that has senkos listed as a primary technique by the mfr.

Usually some middle ground between too loose to set hook, and locked down. Everybody loses some that get airborne

Not a good deal if you spent more than you might have otherwise for the stuff you will use. If you got more than $70 in value TO YOU, it was a good deal. Regardless, you can probably sell what you don't want for nearly $70, so celebrate.

So...you've got crankbaits and spinning applications covered. You're taking two baitcasting rods, both MF; one with 12# FC and one with 50# braid....? IMO.... MF w/ 12# FC: Jigs 1/4 to 3/8; 1/8-1/4 trig; spinner/chatter; small swimbaits/swim jigs; ; 1/4 rage rig plastics; senkos MF w/50# braid: Jigs 3/8+; >1/4 trig; buzz; frogs/toads.... Go ahead and experiment -- I'm changing my mind all the time about exactly what line I like for which applications

They're limited to pretty specific conditions for me anymore. Fish sitting on/along rather steep drops/ledges; I try to crank parallel to, and slightly up, the ledges -- attempting to bang rock most of the way back up the slope.

Maybe Daiwa and Shimano--- both have good rods AND good reels

Two rods total? Both MF? Is that correct? Both casting? One each spinning and casting? If so, what is the question? How to spool each to get maximum utility out of the pair? What is 'bit of cover'? Pads? Laydowns? Just grass? What sort? Punching thick? Or....?

Spent a few hours fighting wind this weekend out there. Didn't find any that really moved up yet. Very slow. Some hanging out in trees, but nothing feeding aggressively anywhere that I found.

I may find myself with a few days and some free time in Edenton next weekend. Wife's on business and hinted that maybe I should tag along. I've never been . I'd have a kayak. How's the fishing? Chowan? Or maybe the rivers to the Northeast of there? Is it saltwater? Should I make my excuses and stay and fish here in the DMV? I haven't fished anywhere between Chesapeake and New Bern. Any experience/suggestions for locations/launches, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the tip. I have rods rated down to 1/16oz, but even with those, I can't imagine sending that rig more than a few feet.

I hooked mine a couple hours after dark in my kayak. Fought it in pitch dark for a good while, deciding it was certainly a flathead or snakehead. When I got it alongside, I still hadn't turned on a light and didn't want to lip it...I held the line at the side of the yak, not lifting the fish out of the water....I flicked on my light and was reaching for the fishgrips and saw a LMB mouth that looked like I could fit a soccer ball in....and in that same instant, she thrashed and broke the line.

I use similar pouch (as in OP) for my waterproof Galaxy. I wear it around my neck 100% of the time that I am in my kayak. Dropping it over the side is a bigger concern than getting it a little wet. Pics are more than good enough for CPR.

Not sure why all the news emphasis is on the parents. Nothing surprising there, imo. The really horrific conduct, to me, is by the university personnel and testing people who took, and even solicited the bribes.
