As has been stated above, have line cutter very handy and practice tying knots. I have a Boomerang and fingernail clippers around my neck every time I'm near water. When I'm learning a new knot, I'll tie and retie dozens of times while sitting in front of the TV (or pretending to listen to someone else in the room.)

At least you make it to spring before they get officially parked. I get boxes in the mail all the time that I open up and wonder "What the heck was I thinking?" I'd bet that most of the stuff in that category was in a clearance page, or 'deep discounted'....probably half of what I buy from Outlet/Overstock never gets used.....is there a support group for us?

I don't stand ever. Never even tried. However, about half the regulars that I fish with stand all the time. For me, its not just the kayak, though....even if I had a Cuda, I probably wouldn't stand much...I trust the platform...don't trust me so much....I can be challenged walking on dry land. If think you're going to want to stand, then start wide

Wow. Credit can enable people to dig themselves into very deep holes. But, it is also an extremely valuable tool. "stay away from credit" isn't very sound advice, IMO. I have bought homes, numerous vehicles and a host of other things using credit. Few are the times that it has haunted me for even a short time. And, I've never taken out a title loan. Takes a little personal responsibility to manage, but credit is NOT inherently bad.

Not a stupid question at all. While reading a recent reel maintenance thread yesterday, I thought that a comprehensive thread, or even article is overdue. The couple of articles that I've found don't answer many common questions....professional opinions or answers to some basic questions can be challenging to come by; Suggested maintenance: each time out; couple/few times a season; annually; every couple years...with details for both baitcasting and spinning; special care after rain, freeze, sand, submerging, salt water use, etc.. Lube vs. Grease -- differences in composition; recommended brands; where to apply and when; greases or lubes that are actually harmful to a reel..... Maybe suggested maintenance for engineers who want to break down a reel completely vs maintenance for people like me who have trouble operating a screwdriver, etc.

I'm devil advocating a bit here, but as a yakker, just a little....but being legally lighted doesn't alleviate boaters of their responsibilities, either. I've been on the wake end of a LOT of boaters who seem to feel that 50MPH on plane means that anything smaller simply has no business being in their path. I wear my PFD always and I show a 360 light beginning prior to sunset until sunrise....and an orange flag 24/7. I only cross marked channels when I've evaluated it as safe and I don't linger there. And, still, I feel abused by boaters every few times out. Recognition that there's more and more rec paddlers should lead to more boater caution.... not just anger and frustration. The difference is bigger than Perception vs Future Beach...or $500 vs $370...to me, the difference between sit-in vs. sit on top is huge. And, while I'm technically wrong...there isn't any difference between 10 and 9.5. My wife has a Perception Tribe 9.5 and it doesn't paddle or track any worse than my Wildy 10.

Budgets are good. Very good....and I'm usually upset when people ask for a $150 rod recommendation and people say you gotta spend $200. However, fishing in a yak, you have to feel stable, safe and somewhat comfortable or it will be a miserable experience. If you aren't sure about kayaking and just want to give it a shot, a cheap boat will get you on the water and might find out if you like it. A better way might be to rent one or borrow one for a long outing to see if its for you.

$250? Used possibly...tho, unlikely....is that including paddle? PFD? Crate? Car crossbars? Car racks? Dry box, anchor, trolley, flag, rod holders, whistle, sonar, stake pole and all the other stuff you're going to want a week after your first paddle? I'm being a bit facetious...and it doesn't HAVE to be expensive...but I haven't figured that part out. At $250, I imagine you're going to have to get extraordinarily lucky to get into something you'll be happy with more than a couple outings. Take a hard look before buying the Sun Dolphins or other 'budget' yaks that you see at Dicks, Walmart, etc. Many (most) are 2-piece and the interwebs say stay away from them....I only looked at them in the store and I wouldn't be surprised if the seams between top and bottom pieces don't last. On the other hand, if you get a little better one piece molded yak, you can take solace in the fact that most will retain much better value for when its time to upgrade...so, maybe spend a little more now, or a lot more later?

***Not Egypt Bend....I should probably just start a new thread, but I'm lazy atm.... Floated Bentonville to State Park once again yesterday....a little less focus on fishing than previously, because wife and kids were riding tubes and I was alongside...more of a leisurely day. However, conditions were same as last weekend. I had no more Crazy Flappers and only two mini MegaBugs. Once those were gone, I worked through 'substitutes'....RT Menace, which is great there at times were no go....Baby Brush Hog (I had exactly one left) got me a 15" and a bunch of smaller fish. After that, I was throwing RT Structure Bugs. Fewer bites, but larger fish on average. Caught about two dozen total in 31/2 hours. Good day. As before, get yourself slowed, anchored, stuck, and drag creatures through the holes. Or rip them through the rapids. Finesse worm bite was almost non-existent for no apparent reason.

Watched a buddy turn his Mojo into a two-piece with his tail gate a couple days ago....sad. No rod I've owned would have withstood that, either

@BoomerVT, I've never fished above Downriver Canoe more than about a half mile. But, I did float from Low Water Bridge (right at DC) to State Park last Saturday and Sunday. Smallies were holding tight to bottom and wouldn't touch much until you slid it slowly past their faces. Few caught on spinners or cranks....no topwater bite before dusk that I'm aware of. (Couple of the guys continued on to Front Royal and didn't come off until after 10PM!) Crazy Flappers, Mega Bug (minis), flukes, and four inch senkos bounced with the current turned out to be just the thing. I believe that everyone caught fish, with some in the upper teens (and one 20".) Rigs I prefer are Owner Finesse ball heads, OMTD finesse tungsten jig heads, wacky heads, slider spider heads. Those come through the rocks pretty well. Bitsy/finesse-y jigs are good, too. Small bug/craw like plastics seemed to be working best in dark browns, blues, black. Flukes gotta be white right now....no idea why, but greens were ignored when whites killed 'em. Any green/brown worms in four or five inch lengths are good. Stick worms generally better than thinner ones, but I did get a 14 1/2 on a four inch slider worm. We found that drifting with current was often too fast in a lot of stretches. Try to stop on the rocks, or at the bank close to holes. It will allow you to cast in and work the drops a lot slower than while you're drifting past. I'm going out again tomorrow, but not sure what stretch we'll float. I'll update on Thurs. Good luck.

Can't thank you enough, @Logan S . I don't follow the pros at all, but, still, I was excited to have them in our backyard. So many things about that weekend have fascinated me.... Lucas getting nearly every fish from a single pier...seeing your pics of Prince at the top of the Occoquan (I never caught a largemouth that far up after April), your details about KVD's knowledge and approach...hearing of guys sitting on a spot, not fishing, just waiting out the tides...sounds like an incredible weekend. Thanks again.
