Baits you plan on trying this year.
I understand, and I am not disagreeing by any means, it just hasn’t produced the quality for me compared to a jig. Might be time to revisit it. Typically by end of June at latest, I am fishing at night.

@Munkin Same here minus the tournament aspect regarding a Slug-go. Taught myself how to fish it & detect bites prior to the next jerk (controlled slack). Always loved seeing a bass come up & turn on a Slug-go. Same went for a weightless Trick Worm. I caught tons of fish on them but the size was usually lacking other than around spawning period. I started fishing more "power fishing" type baits in search of better quality fish & it has consumed me.

Prettiest Backlash Ya'll Ever Did See!
Clamp down drag & press thumb firmly into line, if your nails aren’t going to dig in, tip of thumb helps then reel. It works like you describe in 2nd portion I quoted above. As I stated earlier, it’s not a cure all but it can help or at least get the detangling started in some instances. More often than not, pulling from line guide will spin spool to first stuck loop, as you said. The pick with hook can help reach it to make space for unlooping loops within loops or cinched down hard. On bad ones, the issue is sometimes being able to see it (loose unspooled line that isn’t necessarily looped). I’ve had some that looked like some of the pics above & ended up being 2-3 loops within loops & the rest just unspooled & loose. When detangling, once the line resembles pubic hair & you’ve made zero to very little progress, it’s probably not going to happen. Focus on the line going to the line guide & where it’s stuck first. Pulling the loops that aren’t holding down line going into line guide usually causes more issues from my experience but there are occasions where that can help a bit & free up other loops. Hard to give advice on this subject without clear, specific examples. Rapala clippers with pick I use to grab hard to reach loops:

If you could only fish 5 Lures
@Dogface He has indicated he has hundreds if not thousands of victims clients from BR alone & many assistants traveling throughout the US, CAN & one located in a cantina down in MX not too far from @king fisher.

If you could only fish 5 Lures
Interesting "lures". 🤣

If you could only fish 5 Lures
Unfortunately a "financial advisor" I know won’t ever limit me to 5 or 10 baits for the rest of my life.

Absolute beginner jig fisherman questions
@CDMTJager Black & blue, brown & orange, & watermelon/green pumpkins are my usual suspects. Some examples: Color names (my interpretation of similar) below of jigs shown above which IMO are minimum starting points for colors with SK Rage Bug, Rage Craw or Rage Menace Grub trailers: Alabama Craw (brown/orange) Bever Craw (Okeechobee Craw) Black & Blue Black Blue & Purple Definite Watermelon Dirty Chartreuse (summer craw/watermelon) Green Pumpkin Magic (brown/purple, PBJ) Those are variations of the basics (IMO), can go lighter or darker pending water clarity. I’d definitely consider all black as well though I’ve yet to fish one as the brand I use doesn’t have one of this model in production. I omitted red hues for same reason but should also be considered once you get some experience under your belt & figure out what may work on your waters. If fishing cover, like laydowns, brush, logs, rocks, angle of the hook eye along with head shape are key in being able to pull the jig through. If you ever fish in a boat, a good lure retriever will pay for itself & often if you haven’t set the hook into the snag, you can move boat over & past the snag & should be able to free the jig easily. Can come back later if fish get spooked. Unfortunate by product of fishing gnarly cover at times.

Absolute beginner jig fisherman questions
@CDMTJager I completely understand. Food & money quickly disappear once boys hit the age of 10 or 12. I have 2 boys myself, both over 27 now, thank goodness.

Also, forgot to mention & my opinion only, don’t skimp when it comes to fluorocarbon. You typically get what you pay for. If you’re concerned about backlash & going through too much, use some cheap mono backing until the overruns are a thing of the past.

Favorite EWG Hook ?
@ChrisD46 Please don’t take offense in me asking, but now that I see the whole picture after you’ve supplied additional info (using a fluke), are you Texposing the hook point & still having hookup issues? Other options might include using a hook with a centering pin/screw lock in the eye. Could also be other factors besides hook causing missed fish. My opinion only, you get what you pay for in most hooks & lines. Same subject covered here about a year ago:

Jitterbug
The sound is pretty subtle IMO, especially the Musky version for its size. Best I could find quickly: Yes, as @WRB said, upgraded hooks & adding split rings are good ideas as well.

Outdated but very underrated. G700 is the Musky & next size down G650 5/8oz will also get hammered.🥷

Absolute beginner jig fisherman questions
@CDMTJager Do what you feel best, but I wouldn’t go under 12lb. line, especially if you’re fishing around wood or rock. Granted, I rarely fish jigs from the bank but with 7’+ MH baitcaster, I can throw 1/4oz jig + trailer just fine on 15lb fluoro. The trailer will add some weight. You should be fine with 12-17lb line. You’re probably going to want to set the hook pretty good once you gain the confidence like you have T-rigging, so the heavier line will allow for that more than diminishing casting, IMO. Start throwing at ice out. They can be up shallow looking for craws much earlier than you might expect. Caught most of my largest fish here in IN before mid-April fishing jigs. Pick 3 basic colors & trailers in varying weights. Cycle through weights until fish tell you what they want. I fish a Dirty Jig Canterbury Flipping Jig all year with SK Rage whatever, mostly in 1/2oz, 3/8oz if being shy/stubborn (LMB). I’d go lighter if targeting smallies & trim the skirt a bit & bite off trailer for more compact profile. Stick a pig. 👍

@Team9nine Nicely done. I’d be throwing that bug until they’re sick of it. 👍 @The Bassman If we ever go, I’m hiding that spinning rod. Well done, bud. 👍

Fisheries Biologist consultant wanted
@TnRiver46 It’s all good buddy. I’m not one to freak out over nuisance animals being dealt with & my reaction above was 100% joking. My buds tend to behave themselves on my property so the traps are reserved for raccoons, opossums & the occasional pesky chipmunk. After seeing 10-12 raccoons trapped a couple of years ago I think the squirrels have learned to stay away from metal cages. Apologies for distracting from the topic at hand. I do have a question related to hiring a pond/lake management company. Does anyone ever feel they’re being 100% honest with what a body of water may or may not need? I mean they’re in the making money business first, right? I can see the benefits but I could also see where taking advantage of people could be very easy. Do they ever tell a client they don’t need anything?

How do YOU fish the split shot rig?
Used to drag t-rigged nightcrawlers around on 4lb test mono with BB split shot for smallmouth & walleye on ultralight rods. #4 Eagle Claw gold Aberdeen hook eventually gave way to a #1 or #2 Owner 5101 light wire offset hook. Don’t recall exactly which hook model, was 35+ years ago before buying things online was even a thought. Was deadly for spawning fish, but tend to have gotten away from that sort of fishing. Can catch monster bluegill & redear (shellcrackers) with that technique as well.

We’re almost there. Can’t wait. Well, OK….more like- Jerk baits without split rings
@gimruis I’d add one to a MB, see if it alters the action or suspending at all. If all is fine, add to all. Oval or teardrop probably best option unless you already have round rings & you’re not wishing to go down a potential rabbit hole of additional expenses.- Tell me how stupid this is . . .
@Shadow1 A similar idea was brought up in another thread regarding MB Vision 110’s. I’d use what was recommended by @A-Jay, as he has a wealth of experience & success fishing for & consistently catching trophy class SMB. From my understanding, the wire being knottable is key to this tackle. ETA: the above is the same as recommended by @WRB. Did not realize this prior to posting. - Pattern Fishing
