  1. Heya Link, I was there last fri, I'm not sure about the water levels now, but when I was wading there were ALOT more deep spots. You'd also have to wade deeper to get to those rocks I was full swimming and up to my neck deep to get to some of them. Though it could have just been the path I chose, lol the current there isn't as strong and there aren't many people there to hook into =D
  2. Algonkian Regional Park buddy. Yeah, that's one of the possible launch sites that Ernie uses and the one we'll be using this weekend with him. I'll have to ask him about the other ones cuz this one makes me nervous. You gotta remember to land before you hit great falls ! Now that could get ugly. we'll definitely be feeling the burn then...lol
  3. Nice fish! I think Andrew and I are going to give it a shot this friday also. Have any recommendations on lure type and how to work them? edit: just glanced at the pic again ... I love tubes =D
  4. time to buy some twin tail grubs.... quick question sam, what baitcaster are you using to toss a 1/32? i think i'd backlash like crazy if I tried it on mine
  5. Heya, try something smaller like a 2in white grub on a 1/16 or 1/8 pz jig head. You'll be able to catch smaller ones which are pretty fun, big ones will hit those too if ya get lucky!
  6. Looking to buy an UL rod but not looking to spend too much any suggestions? Was thinking of a Berkley Lightning or a St croix Triumph/Premier?
  7. When I was at maiden's landing there weren't very many rocks down the river, I'm not sure about up river. It's generally shallow there, but there are some deep parts that I kept away from. I stuck to the parts that came up only to my waist where I targeted shoreline laydowns and eddies from submerged rock formations. At pony pastures the current is much stronger so you'll have to be a bit more careful. There's a really strong current that's near the police and night fishing parking area and along that flow there's a large rock...right below that rock where the water is calm I hooked into a nice one...maybe about 1 lb from the looks of it ...with it fighting and the flowing current it put up a hell of a fight on my fly rod. I lost it eventually as the hook ripped from it's mouth but strong current could hold larger fish. If you travel all the way to the back there's another strong current where a friend of mine pulled a 2lber from and I hit 3 small stripers (1lb each). I've found that tossing into current and letting my fly drift down yielded some results and J had good results tossing into deep pools. If you go to pony pastures maybe i'll see you there in the afternoon around 4 =D I'll be the idiot hooking himself with a fly!
  8. Nice! I'd give anything to catch a big fish on a fly! good job!
  9. How many are needed to make a good meal for 2 =D?
  10. So I was exploring a local office pond/lake and near the back it drains into a small creek. At the start of this creek is a small pool and it's filled with pretty darn large bluegill. I've heard that they're pretty good to eat but just in case...what do you guys think? Yes or no?
  11. I use braid with a fluoro leader, I don't have to touch the braided section at all cause if anything get nicked or cut it's usually in the leader which I can change out easily. I have braid on my main BCer for about a year now and there's about as much braid on there as when I first spooled.
  12. Hit this 3lb 4oz-er today on a baby brush bug in junebug w/ chartreuse tails. Fun fight! he ran a few times Pic doesn't do him justice!
  13. wow i'll have to try there some day...2 hour drive....hmmm
  14. Nice! 20 keeper day sounds awesome =D I need to learn how to use my fish finder...then we can try and hit up those deep areas!
  15. You can try =P I don't think you can as well as on the sit on tops.
  16. I recently started using fluoro leaders, i use the Improved albright aka alberto knot exclusively. Easy to tie and I've never had the knot fail
  17. Lol Sam's right, there is a big difference in stability, there's 2 types Primary and secondary stability. Primary is how easily the kayak wobbles, while secondary is how much wobbling it can take before actually flipping. Sit on top kayaks are generally wider leading to greater primary stability, it can wobble far from left to right, but low secondary where once you get to the point of flipping it'll dump you out and you'll have a hard time flipping back over. Sit in kayaks are about the opposite depending on the type you choose. In general sit on top kayaks are more stable, also if you get a larger sit on top kayak you'd probably be able to stand up in it.
  18. I'd stick to a sit-on-top kayak for fishing, more space for tackle and storage but many people do fish from sit-ins
  19. Heya Sam, I might try that area out, it's by the Dam near the chippenham pky? this area? is there parking?
  20. I'd go for a nice kayak, you could wait for a good deal to come up on craigslist or buy new. Get a sit-on-top.
  21. I first started using a leader when I was fishing rocks, braid frays too easily on rocks to not have a leader, otherwise I just stuck to straight braid on everything else. However I later switched to hi-vis yellow braid and the red braid so that I could see my line moving more easily vs the green braid. With the hi-vis line change I felt I needed a leader so I've been tying one on ever since. The knot is fairly easy to tie (improved albright) and the cinch knot at the end of the line has always broken off before the leader knot.
  22. The pivot point of my BC and rod is right on my BCer, so I palm to get the perfect balance
  23. Been trying to learn how to fly fish recently and I've been trying to find places to wade for smallmouth in the james. Went to a place called maiden's landing on the advice of an Orvis guy. Didn't really know where to cast as this place was totally different that Pony pastures (rocky vs flat and shallow) I ended up casting my flies toward laydowns near the shore (great accuracy practice for the fly rod) and hit a couple small ones that I wanted to share. These guy put up a nice fight on a fly rod, I can't wait to hook up into a 1lb+. Anyone know of a wade-able area for some decent smallies?
  24. Grats! I've caught a couple decent ones from there too, they really like the tubes!
  25. hmmmm, wading in the james or fishing that pond...dam that's a tough choice
