Richmond Shad are running up the James!
I suppose it depends on how you look at it. If you're on the bank there's usually about 290348209384 people on the bank too...here's a peak of ancarrows on a weekday afternoon... There are probably other places to fish along the James but the river narrows around this area which concentrates the fish. Many times people on the bank can catch just as many as people on the boat, it's just a hassle dealing with people and tangling lines and such. As for being on a boat...boaters suffer the same problem, there are a TON of boats out on the weekend and a decent amount on the weekdays I've noticed, parking is horrible. Some of the boaters can be pretty reckless also. Possibly if you're in another large bass boat or V-hull it's a minor annoyance when you're hit by the wake of a passing boat, but us guys on the kayaks and canoes can get rocked around pretty hard. But atleast you'll be able to cast pretty freely without the worrying that the guy next to you only has a 1/4oz weight and when he casts the current will sweep his "bottom rig" down and snag about 6 other lines including yours

Nice! I was out on Ancarrows between classes, it was pretty slow for me, 6 in the morning and another 6 later in the afternoon. The weather is messing with us!

Richmond Shad are running up the James!
Yea, they'll still be there in a month, I think during April is when it's really hot though so you might be getting the end of it, should still be fun though.

OK .... I think I am pretty much done with flourocarbon lines!!!!
I also hate fluoro as a mainline, I don't seem to have the thumb control to handle it and when I backlash it doesn't birdnest but rather just loosens up around the spoon alllllll the way down... I use it only for leaders on my braided line now...

teh cheap tungsten.
I fell for the price too =D alot of people like the tru-tungsten weights, I like them also but they get to be really expensive...for a cheaper alt turn to ebay. Ebay ones will have plastic inserts (which people have had issues with them popping out and cutting their line) vs the beveled inner edge. I haven't had any issues with the insert problem so I can't justify spending so much on the tru-tungsten. But whatever your choice, both options will still give ya the smaller weight profile and crisper bottom detection.

Fact from Fiction about Spray scents on Post below
Molecules in a biological sense are simply small particles at the cellular level, chemists define it as a small unit of atoms bound together. So when he says a molecule it could be one molecule of the oil, whatever it is, which can actually be extremely long hydrocarbon chain. You can think of it as a puzzle piece, no matter how small or large it is if it doesn't fit properly into the certain receptor the nerve won't send the signal to the brain. So you can jam pack the receptor full of as much oil or whatever you want, but if they don't bind together properly nothing happens

teh cheap tungsten.
when I was looking for tungsten bullet weights to use I came across these. They were on sale at my local tackle store for really cheap next to the high priced tungsten...and there was a good reason...these are horrid. If they're the ones I think they are, they have what seems like a soft rubbery coating over them, really kills the feeling of bumping things underwater, and pulling them through weeds, grass, whatever is a chore.

Lots of new Curados for sale! Whats up with that?
I love my e7, I have smaller hands so it's perfect for me. The curado 101d was also a nice sized reel but there was an issue with the drag on the one I got. e7...love it

Richmond Shad are running up the James!
Those were only maybe 2lbs? schoolie stripers, but I've heard of much bigger. Some friends of mine are in the masters/phD program in Fishery management/biology, they've caught huge striper coming up the james in gill nets. So large ones are out there!

Richmond Shad are running up the James!
you'll be able to fish there on a canoe, bring a heavier anchor though, there's not much there to catch on it seems. The current still drags my yak around with a 3lb anchor.

Richmond Shad are running up the James!
Right now I believe that they're staging right downriver of the 95 bridge according to some friends from orvis and greentop. Later on in a few more weeks they'll move up above the 95 near the 14th street bridge. If you aren't on a boat you can try to bank fishing from ancarrows landing, it's really crowded there but you hit them pretty regularly as the river narrows in that area. On my fly rod I was using small clouser looking flies both the stripers and shad will hit those it seems. The stripers don't seem to touch the silver/gold spoons

Richmond Shad are running up the James!
For large boats the closest launch is at Anncarrow's Landing, bass boats and V-hulls etc launch here. At the peak of shad season parking here is horrible. Googlemaps link to anncarrow's If you're on a kayak or canoe you can launch from the 14th street bridge area, designed for kayakers/canoeist to launch. Googlemaps link to 14th street bridge launch

Richmond Shad are running up the James!
VABasser hit it on the head, 1-1.5in silver or gold spoons. I use 6lb line tied to a 1/2oz trolling sinker with about 2-3 ft of mono leader. I feel that early in the season the longer leader helps but in the middle when it's really hot they'll slam anything. I watched a guy last year drop a polished silver hook straight down and got bit... Also, I always put a small orange bead above my spoon, I don't know why but it seems to help a bit. I was out on Sat and Sun practicing/fishing with the fly rod and my own hand tied flies!. Didn't hit as many as I would have with the spinning gear but it was mad fun ! There's also stripers mixed in on the James. Here's a few =P

James River
Heya, I've heard that the striper are there but I haven't seen any caught. However the shad are definitely there, I've been catching them on small 1in gold or silver spoons. Also, perch are running like crazy too, people with the sabiki rigs catch them 2-3-4-5 at a time

sorry Dan, not a clue =(

Richmond Shad are running up the James!
Shad seems to be coming up the James, caught some hickories the other day, about 15-20. People were pulling up Perch 2-3-4-5 at a time with the sabiki rigs. silver or gold 1 in spoons seem to be hot, my fly fishing bubby had a lot of luck with pink/purple fly.

Anyone have any experience with the St croix Avid Flyrod?
BPS has them on sale at an extremely discounted price, with some good reviews. Can anyone else comment on them? Thanks

kayaks for river smallmouth fish
I fish off a kayak exclusively, as I don't my have money, time, or means to move and jon around. I love it but my back and @ss do hurt after a few hours. I love the convience and the ability to launch almost anywhere. I picked up a hobie sport, it's amazing.

Avid Handle?
I also don't like the Power hump very much, after a little bit of fishing it feels like an entire day of clicking on the computer...carpal tunnel >< As for the Avids vs LT, fished with both, I can't really tell a difference between the two, I do prefer the split grip design though. I like how the end of the rod ends in a ball kinda thingy, feels nice sliding in my hand =P

Complete impulse buy!!:St Croix Mojo Bass

Baitcasters And Braid
imo i feel that braid is much easier to deal with than mono and extremely easier to deal with than fluoro. It doesn't jump off the spool like mono/fluoro can if you happen to to put enough pressure when casting. Also picking out braid, to me, is alot easier when you do backlash, just gently pick at the loops and it'll eventually work its way out, you don't have to worry about line kinks also.

I don't know how it happened
I just burned $300 to add new stuff to my fishing kayak =/ bait monkey doesn't like to get wet >
