My suggestion if you're just getting started, and what I use most often, is a creature, beaver or craw style bait in the 4" ballpark on a 3/0 or 4/0 hook. I prefer EWG but that's a whole new topic. You can drag, dead stick, swim, pitch and flip, etc. Very versatile and most can be reused as a trailer. I'd also consider a couple packs of 6" ribbon tail worms and 5" stick worm/senko style bait.
  2. Jerkbait is a lure that I'm still very much experimenting with. I started a few years ago with rapala, which I like, but once I got my hands on some 3 hook baits, my school of thought is 3 is better than two, especially for the amount of "swipe" strikes I get. I bought a few of the Berkley Skinny Cutter 110, but I'm thinking about the Mcstick and Rattling Rogue. It's hard for me to justify $25 for a jerkbait, and I know if I go down that rabbit hole, there's probably no coming back ?
  3. I've never thrown that exact bait, but I have a pile of the War Eagle Finesse spinnerbaits. I prefer to throw them with a single trail grub trailer rather than a trailer hook. High 6 or low 7 reels get the job done for me.
  4. What is your favorite situation and colors for the Spro 110?
  5. I just experienced this for the first time. It's a major blow, especially when you are compulsively tracking the order and see the truck pull up.
  6. Fatty McBugeye... Almost lost my entire grip on her trying to take the darn picture ?
  7. Suppose you could. To save $$$ I use cheap backing and when the braid needs replaced I spool it onto another reel. The other end of the line deeper in the spool should be like new. Get twice the life out of the braid. Backing is just a filler.
  8. (PA) The Army Corps of Engineers are closing all facilities (pavillions, public fishing areas, restrooms, info center, etc.) but boat ramps are still open. Pulled the plug of a tournament we were supposed to have tomorrow at Raystown. I went out to a county park on Thursday and fished with no problem, and they even stocked trout earlier in the week. Their facilities were also locked up. Seems to me they're more concerned about large crowds than a couple guys floating on a boat. Makes sense. I think I'll be headed pond hopping this weekend before they take more drastic actions.
  9. Based on your description I'm going to respond regarding ponds/lakes I fish that are <100 acres with good shoreline access. I've caught the majority of my fish this winter on moving baits. A squarebill (great time for a flat side) and finesse spinnerbait have been key players. I also wouldn't rule out a drop shot. My theory is a reaction strike will produce a bite even if the fish don't want to eat. And the dropshot just works, if you have the patience for it. Your weather sounds a lot like mine. Assuming we are in a similar climate, I pay more attention to the overnight lows. It seems like once we are consistently above freezing at night, the bass start to show up shallow. Just an observation. I try and find the warmest water I can. Stained water, nothern banks, rocks that hold heat. A degree or two can go a long way. Good luck!
  10. I see your point, but I don't use a true crank rod for square bills.
  11. @DanielG I understand it won't be weedless, but it should help from getting wedged. Had to use the tip of my pliers today to get some of it out
  12. Good evening! I'm having an issue with a crankbait (photo attached) where the small gap between the hanger for the split ring and the bill collects every piece of grass, debris, etc. I'm considering ways of filling the gap (maybe baking soda and super glue) but I'm not sure what effect it will have on the bait? Is this a good idea? Or does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
  13. March ☑️
  14. Shhh.... ???
  15. I'm going to jump on here. Found out last night that a good friend of mine has family that are building on/near Okeechobee. Imagine it will be a year or two before they are in, but as you can imagine we're already scheming. Starting my research early and appreciative of any general advice you might offer. I will continue to post details of location as they play out.
  16. Cull vs Call. Unless you have a fancy app, a phone is not necessary for this process ??
  17. I've been sitting on a $30 gift card that I received with my guidewear jacket. Maybe it's meant to be! I use the single strap version. It's well built. Faded from sun damage but zippers and straps and seams are still in good shape. I've made it work, but the size I have is better suited as a day bag. For multiple day tournaments or longer trips I take a plano weekender (think that's the name) along with it. Trying to find a bag that I can consolidate into one. Thanks for the response!
  18. This is probably more "storage" than "tackle" but I'm hoping for suggestions on a tackle backpack (co-angler and bank fishing) Everything I see advertised is how much tray storage they offer. I can get away with two 3700 trays and a smaller terminal box, but I carry a lot of plastics, in their original packages/clam shells. Suggestions?
  19. I'm one snowflake away from transferring my wish list into a shopping cart, and one driveway cleaning away from pulling the trigger on it. It looks like early March might bring Spring-like weather, or at least lows above freezing. I need all the help I can get to make it there!
  20. I'm curious for some feedback on what's happening to the water in a small 50 acre lake, with one main creek channel and a max depth of about 25ft. The lake is partially frozen, so the area's I can fish are limited. I am thinking that the frozen vs open water has more to do with surface temperature, and that the deeper water, even if it's under ice, could be more stable. Not sure if I'm on the right track or not, but I'm trying to learn something from this and increase my odds of putting my presentation in front of fish in the open water that is available. Thanks!
  21. 7.4:1 can do just about everything. My preference is to be able to pick up line when I need to, and slow down if I have to. The only reasons I didn't start throwing moving baits on a higher speed reel was because it wasn't "the norm"
  22. February ☑️
  23. I should try to become efficient with both. My fishing buddy throws left handed reels and there are times, especially in a partner tournament, that it would be beneficial to pick up one of his rigs or vice versa. Physically, I can do it, but the mental block that happens must look something like Charles Barkley's golf swing ?
  24. For me it's the PowerBaiters (trout dough). They seem to get the special treatment, and the bass anglers don't get squat. I for one enjoy when the vegetation chases them away. They do a good enough job of messing the lake up in the Spring when the bass want to move up and there's a line out every 10 feet for 8 hours a day. Oh, and yes... Rock, wood, the hard stuff would be where I would look first.
  25. They might have had something to do with it? Didn't get any R2S though.
