First bass of 2023
Fished a club tournament which was my first trip this year. First bass of the year. Weighed a limit a little over eighteen pounds. The worm has turned.

Why is this DAIWA reel $109.99 cost more than the Pflueger $69.95. Compare pics and tell me the Daiwa Isnt junk.
I’ve personally never heard a single bash regarding Pflueger reels. To the contrary, I’ve heard numerous comments about the value. I own multiple Daiwa after owning numerous Pflueger reels and don’t bash. Now you have an exception.

New Yamamoto Bait
When the Senko was introduced way back when, my buddy showed them to me. My optimism level was about a 2 out of 100. Then he fished with me and proved the magic of that bait. I won’t make that mistake again.

Vertical vs. Horizontal Presentation
I watched a documentary on Tom Brady and the concept of situational football. I think the concept rolls over to situational fishing. Each situation should dictate the lure and how it is presented. The factors that establish the situation can be, depth, water color, weather pattern, type of cover or the absence of cover, structure, water temp, bait/forage, and the strike radius or fish activity level. The fish can be really active but the cover may require a vertical presentation. On the other end, the fish can be inactive but a horizontal presentation is required to solicit a strike although painfully slow.

The one second-moment you'd wish you could have captured on film.
When Mount St. Helens blew.

Casting in the pool
Fishing for the elusive chlorine carp, are you. Fortunately my comfort height toilet is deep enough to check a lures rate of fall.?

Alpha Angler Zilla Vaader
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not trash talking AA product. It appears to me Boomer cherry picked the best blank options for his rod options and chose a minimalist build. Nothing wrong with that.

Alpha Angler Zilla Vaader
Alpha Angler rods are build on North Fork Composite blanks. I looked at the NFC S2 blank and matched it with my Mag Rebound and rebound. Edge does not provide a finish rod with those two blanks as of yet. I have an EFX Pro mbr735C-1. This is the Zilla. The Zilla Vader is the Black widow MBR735C1. The Chatter Bound is the EVX Pro Hybrid in 706. AA rods are the simplist builds out there but they fish well. I found it easier to buy Edge rods directly.

Local or Regional Goodies
My buddy and I were discussing a lure manufacturer that just disappeared. It was a soft plastics company out of Florence Oregon that made best tubes ever and a couple of hot colors that we haven’t been able to replicate. The guy passed away I guess. I have to believe there’s many many lure makers out there that are the go toes in their local region but we’ve never heard of them. Anyone want to share?

Ancestry??
My 4th great uncle was James Harrower. He was born in Inverness Scotland and enlisted in the King’s Royal Highlander’s in the 42nd of Foot, also known as the Blackwatch. Sgt. Harrower was wounded in the revolutionary war during the siege of Charleston. He survived his wounds and returned to England to heal. He made a career of the Army and had a large family. Small world.?

Karens & Kens confronting you when fishing!
Carry a pair of shooting ear muffs and when the rant starts, put them on and keep fishing.
-
Ancestry??
My grandfather, who I never knew. He lived the first 17 years of his life in orphanages, Poor Law boys schools and Work Houses in Hackney Union, Middlesex England. He was sent to Canada in 1893 and was indentured until he was 19 years old. My Dad never spoke of him.

Ancestry??
Have any of you traced your ancestry by DNA and or other means? My daughter and I made it a hobby. Our investigation has lead to far more than I could have imagined.

are you retired? do you fish ALL the time?
I retired six years ago on June 8th. I was glad I made it as long as I did but my profession required more than I could provide and I felt I couldn’t perform to the standards I set for myself any longer. If I could have, I would have stayed longer. The relationships I was apart of were my greatest loss. Once you leave a career those others continue on. like Catt, my family occupies a great deal of my time. My mother has also required more time than I ever imagined. As much as I enjoy fishing, it has to be placed low on the list of priorities. Don’t be in any hurry to retire. Choose the timing and try not to let the timing choose you. As far as fishing goes, quantity might not mean quality. Just some thoughts.......

Muddy water is my Achilles!
- How do I determine the correct tube jig head (weight and hook size)?
The tube just are 1/4 with 3/0 hooks. Length is a bit different. The tubes 4.5 and 3.5 and match up well with these jigs. Braid to leader is the way to go. Good casting, no stretch and transmit bites on a tight line. Flouro leader about 9 feet allow the knot to be on the spool when you land the fish. It sounds like you’re good to go. - How do I determine the correct tube jig head (weight and hook size)?
