The WP 90 weighs 1/2 ounce and is a wind in retrieve. The 734 handles that very well. The Super Spook is heavier and it works with manipulation of the rod. The 734 does this very well. That model like most Dobyns has tip and power. Efficient hook sets and enough flex to keep those fish hooked up. ?

When I still fished for steelhead, I had a section of river that required a serious hike and climb. It was pristine and the only sounds were water and birds. As far as bass locations go there are few locations close. Sitting in the boat in the garage playing with gear is quiet and relaxing.?

Great question. The more exposure you have to different brands, series and models, the clearer it will be to you what you are seeking. For me it’s starts with the budget. No reason to research rods outside your price range. I look for a rod with specific power and action and how they compliment each other. The blank is the heart and soul of the rod. Then comes the build. It’s possible to nullify much of the quality of a good to exceptional blank with a poor build and poor components. I look for the best quality guides and reel seat that are proven. I look for a full rear grip where possible and no for grip. The build MUST be balanced! That’s part of the build. I want super clean fit and finish. The cosmetics are the last consideration. I prefer the minimalist look. So if there is a brand, series and model that have the weight range, line range and action to fulfill the techniques, I’m probably there. A company with good service and warranty is gravy.

Oh ya. Gears, drive belts, pulleys and more. It’s a nice set up.

I bought my grandson Ian an erector set. His mechanical aptitude at ten years old is amazing. The set has 18 working options that are motorized. Watching him apply the schematics and diagrams and assemble the model makes me very proud of him. With a bit more practice he’ll be ready to service my reels.

You know you’ve been in a fight when you have to subdue someone 25 years younger than you who’s tweeked on Meth and they’re hell bent on taking your side arm and killing you with it. Being I can relate that, you can deduce I won. Ended up with knee surgery and he ended up with 17 years in state custody. I was 61 at the time. The others are public record. We could always do like the guys in the movie Jaws and compare scars.

Dobyns has differentiated their Champion line up into three categories. Traditional, crankbait and swimbait. Each category has it’s own assigned power within the category. A traditional 5 power is not the same as a crankbait 5 power which is not a swimbait 5 power. You have to look at the category, the bait weight range and how that range determines the assigned power for the category. It was an attempt to simplify rating powers but when you overlap the categories it muddles the intent. When I called Dobyns and spoke to Gary himself years ago, he alerted me or cautioned me not to confuse the standard bass model powers with crankbait powers or swimbait powers. Frankly, it would be a benefit to explain this concept in Dobyns catalogue. I don’t compare what Dobyns ratings are to other rods if I’ve had no experience with the model used to make a comparison. On the positive side, what I have learned is the graduations in the powers of each model are consistent regardless of the series. And for the OP, is a Champion an upgrade over a Mojo? I think so but that will be debated I’m sure. Just a quick addendum: the flip and punch models are also a separate category.

I have this model. I use it for that purpose. I also throw 1/2 Dark Sleepers, under spins, heavy shakey heads and pitch Senkos with it. I used this rod as a back seater a lot and threw Cloud 9 15’s with it. Dobyns also has a Kaden 743 and the actions are very similar. Just a thought. Doug
