Those painful pet peeves!
I’m having a slow day. I try a new spot technique or lure. Catch a bass on the first cast, Making me think I finally found a pattern. Then no more bites.

Braided line - which ones stand out?

Split Shot
I didn't explain very well. You put the shot on the short piece of line above the bait, not below it like a typical dropshot. The dropper is short and above the bait just like a normal split shot rig, only you put the shot on a small dropper, instead of on the main line. You can use a barrel swivel or tie a surgeons knot leaving a tag dropper for the shot. Same rig as many fly fisherman use for a double steamer fly set up only use split shot instead of the front fly.

Split Shot
Tie your line the same as you would for a drop shot. Then instead of a single weight tied to the dropper line, crimp split shot on the dropper. You can add as many shot as you want, and can shorten the dropper to an inch or so, if you want the weight close to the line. If the shot gets snagged it simply slides off, and all you have to do is put a new split shot on. I have used this method swinging flies for salmon and steal head for many years with great success, I'm sure it will work well for bass too.

Why Kayak over Bass Hunter/Pelican?
I can launch my kayak on the beach in large surf and fish on the open ocean. For small ponds I can’t think of any advantage a kayak would have

Waiting for a storm to pass…. Spinnerbait heads?
Bullet and hidden have worked for me

When you're fishing partner is the exact opposite.
When I fish with someone I don't know well, or is an accomplished fisherman dedicated to catching fish. Catts team pattern, method is spot on. When I fish with old time friends, enjoying the time together, reliving old memories, and simply having a good time is priority number one. If I was ever fortunate enough to fish with Catt, I would simply keep my mouth shut, do what I was told, and try to learn as much as I could.

When you're fishing partner is the exact opposite.
If you have been friends for 40 years, time on the water together is far more important than how you fish. No one lives forever and you may have regrets later, if you don't simply relax fish and have fun. Great memories of time spent fishing with friends are cherished forever. Make as many good memories as you can. You are there to have fun, enjoy yourself. You see a good spot that you want to slow down to fish, just say so. I'm sure he wont mind taking a break once in awhile. When I fish with old friends, we constantly cast over each others lines, argue about where the fish are, how we should fish, and of course who has the biggest fish, but we always have a great time. When I fish by myself I'm all business.

Overnight trip - How far would you go??
I leave at 3:30 AM drive 3 hours fish all day. Set up tent in the dark. Start fishing at 6:30. Am. Fish all day drive home. Drive home takes 4 hours one hour more than the drive there because of truck traffic on the mountain roads. Get home at 11:00 pm tired but happy.

Why do fishing rods have to be 1 long piece ? Is there tat much difference in it ?
Multi piece rods don't fly apart, or break, while landing large hard fighting fish, all over the world, but can't catch bass. Seems odd to me.

Could you only fish crankbaits year round forever?
When I was a kid, cranks were all my friends and I fished. We called them bass plugs and I dreamed of having one of those giant tackle boxes filled with plugs. I could fish nothing but Crankbaits and be happy on all but one lake I fish now. The one lake is one big mat of floating vegetation part of the year, and I don't think I could make a crankbait work then.

Fish recovery after Cold Front
You may hit the best day of the year. 25 degree temp. may be cold enough to cause some baitfish to die off. If that is the case the bass will decide to have a party, and you will want to be invited.

Ordering at 3am isn't intelligent
Back when I was young, single, and not very experienced at managing my money. I would stay up late and drink beer with the Bait Monkey. I would look at the BPS and Cabelas catalogues just to see what they had. Next thing I knew I would be on the phone ordering like a kid at Christmas, while the Bait Monkey danced on the couch and drank my beer. I always thought it should be illegal to take orders over the phone that late. The bars closed at 2:00 AM, why shouldn't BPS have to close at Midnight? Now with the internet making it even easier, I am sure glad I have matured. Doesn't hurt that Bait Monkey is scared of my wife.

What is considered "finesse" fishing?
Here in Mexico, a 7 inch Senko fished with a bait caster, and 20 pound line is as close as I get to finesse. Just got to love big dumb bass that don't see lures.

Beginner surf saltwater fishing gear tips
Diawa BG. Best salt water spinning reel for the money. I have saltwater spinning reels that cost 3 times as much as the BG and prefer the BG, I have been a big Shimano fan all of my life but I have to admit they can't compete with the Diawa BG in the price range.

How many different types of rods are required to be a complete fisherman? For the Elite Bassman only.
It doesn't matter how many rods I own, I'm sure that if I buy one more I will become an elite bass angler. My wife tells me if I was ever going to have the bass fishing skills to become an elite bass fisherman, it would have happened many rods ago.

Other Species Latest Catch Pics Thread
Went to Bara de Navidad for 3 days to fish for Marlin and Tuna. Only caught 4 small striped marlin, and no tuna. On the way home to PV decided to fish for Rooster fish, and snapper. Good luck with both.

If you could fish with five BR members & five pros, who would they be?
WRB AJ CATT Blue Basser 86 TN River 46 If I could fish with these five, why would I want to fish with a pro? I have Saltwater fished with Skeet Reese a few times, and he is a great guy to fish with.

Ditches
A ditch is where I unintentionally parked my car a couple of times when I was a teenager. If an underwater ditch attracts bass as well as they attract cars, then a ditch would be a great place to fish.

Ridiculed from buddies for bass fishing???
The problem is the Tilapia they are trying to protect are not a native species. I do understand their point of view. The dam was built to try and improve the lives of the local people. They planted Tilapia to give the people that until then relied completely on farming, a chance to make some money on commercial fishing. Some one plants bass for recreational purposes, and they fear the bass are eating their profits. The bass are there and are not going away. They catch and kill as many as they can with nets, but a few survive and learn to live in the trees where they can't get caught by nets. The lake is not good for numbers. The few that survive have more to eat than a lake with a big population of bass would. Many days I only get a couple bites, but they are usually big. Completely by accident a trophy bass lake was born.

Ridiculed from buddies for bass fishing???
My favorite lake the bass were planted illegally. The commercial fish manager of the lake, wants all the bass removed because he believes they eat to many Tilapia. He lets me sport fish, as long as I let any Tilapia I catch go, while encouraging me to keep any bass I catch. I have to make sure no commercial fisherman see me release a bass. Most of the time I'm the only one on the lake, or am to far away for anyone to see me release a bass. I have killed a 10 pound bass because I caught it while a local was checking his net right next to me. I gave him the bass and he was very happy. I hated to kill it, but I don't want to offend any of the local people and loose access to the lake. I was very critical of the management practices of the lake manager, but a friend pointed out, I hook a DD bass about 1/4 of the days I fish, there, so maybe the management isn't so bad, even if it is accidental.

Fishing in the wind
I don't like the wind, but the bass don't care what I like, and where I fish, the bass like the wind. All my biggest bass have been caught when the wind was blowing more than 15 MPH.

Inflatable PFDs, pocket-loss replacements?
They make inflatable fishing vests with the same pockets as a regular fishing vest. I have used one from Stearns for years in Alaska, but I do there there are other brands in the same price range, and a few better ones that are more expensive.

Fishing idiosyncrasies
When I buy chartreuse lures, they have to lean towards the lime green side of the color spectrum, and away from yellow. I won't fish ones that are more yellow than green.

Blue Saphire
Many people use black and blue jigs, soft plastics, and chaterbaits. For some reason most people think spinnerbaits have to be white. Try a black and blue spinnerbait sometime. You may be surprised.
