Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Merry Christmas everyone! I got out yesterday. Hit 3 spots from shore. The first one was good to me last winter. No fish, fished the hell out of the jerkbait, fish a small real prey, hair jigs, and blade. Spot 2, I know I could hit deep water from shore, jerkbait, swimbait and blade nothing. On my way back home I drove by a pond I haven’t hit. I knew I could reach deeper water, plus a chance for a trout. first few cast got a beautiful brownie on a vision 110

Winter boredom kicking in now
Drinking, tying jig, organizing tackle, video games, research, get me through winter. I try and fish in winter, even if it’s for an hour after work before sundown, fish or no fish, just being out in the woods. Makes me feel good. also skiing helps

Shallow ponds in cold weather
I fish a lot of small ponds as well no more then 7 or 8 feet. I would fish, during warming trends. Even if it’s been in the 30s then you get a couple days of 50. Fish those days. Usually means theres. Storm front rolling through. Small shallow ponds are really affected by the weather. So a quick warm up will raise the water temps slightly. Even 1 or 2 degrees would get them active. I would also try and find some current. An inflow would be good spot to check out. That river water can be slightly warmer. Plus it brings in oxygen. another place to check out is springs. See if you can find a spring. That ground water is warmer then the pond water. Although no oxygen. The ground water mixing with the pond water will Keep the weeds alive, also keeps the pond water warmer. also Fish the northern side, even if it’s super shallow. That side gets the most sun so it will warm up quicker. I’ve caught some large fish in very shallow water even with ice on the pond. some ponds are better then others for winter fishing. So keep trying. I have small ponds that The fish legit stack up in one area . Pond no more then 6 feet. I’m fishing in 3-5 in the narrow northern section, thats where the small creek comes in for baits. Lipless cranks, hair jigs, swimbaits, jigs, ned rigs, jerkbaits, even wake baits I’m in Ma. So we get some bad winters. Some weeks ice, some weeks no ice. Some ponds don’t freeze completely! I’m headed out this afternoon for a quick trip, not a super small pond , but still A pond, maybe 20 acres, fishing a spot where I did well from Shore last winter. Legit only shore spot to fish. It’s a deeper hole in an arm of the pond. There’s a very shallow creek that comes into this arm. It’s been cold out, some ponds are frozen solid, but today it’s going to be 55 and sunny.c but tomorrow a nor’eastah. 50s high winds and lots of rain. I’m pretty confident in getting bit today.

Lucky craft pointers
I know lucky craft pointers are a staple of jerkbait fishin. But there’s so many different pointers. I just recently bought some LC lightning pointer. Only 10 bucks. Has anyone used these? How do they compare to the regular pointers? I hage the lightning staysee and lightning pointers. I was thinking of getting some regular staysee and some extra deep pointers for deep water jerkbaiting.

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Got to fish some prime waters today, fly fished the high country. Absolutely incredible scenery. We saw elk, bison, and donkeys. The fly fishin was tough no fish. The guide told me to Head down stream to fish a super deep pool. Put on the spinning reel on my 4 weight fly rod. Tied on one of My own tied jigs. Last 15 minutes of the day. 2 beautiful browns. The bigger brown was The last cast of the trip.

Eastern Ma & New England Area Fishing Reports
Finally got to fish on my trip to the Rockies. Hired a guide to fish Dillon Reservoir in Silverthorn. Fished with Alpine Fishin Adventures. We fished jigs with meal worms. Gitzit tube and a kastmaster is what the guide used. I switched to my own tied 1/16 ounce jig steelhead jig, crushed em!!!!!! We only needed to fish 2 holes close together in a cove. 30 feet deep. No structure. Just waiting for schools to cruise by. WE SMOKED EM!!! First fish was beautiful brownie, hit like a fright train. Next one was a small beautiful Cutbow trout, (hybrid cutthroat and rainbow) we smoked the little rainbows, but they were so beautiful. Pink stripe, orange fins and white hue around the edge like a brookie. I got a larger bow that that guide thinks it was a cutbow because of the size of it. But I quickly released it before I got to look for the red mark on the jaw. The bows are stocked here and are pretty small. They don’t get big here due to the food source. The guide was telling me there’s a die off of bows in the spring and fall. I also got a sucker. I got one of the Wildest prettiest colored rainbow I’ve ever seen. Unfortunately no Kokanee salmon or Arctic charr. But hey we smoked the fish, got my first Cutbow and 2 new strains of rainbows. Such an incredible day. The scenery was amazing. Goinf fly fishing Saturday on some prime rivers, then Sunday for spawning Kokanee salmon.

Prime months for big bass
A local just got a 9.9 and 8.1 the past 3 days. My buddy has 5 8s in the last 4 years. Another guy got an 8.5 last Sunday Bingo, I’ve had my heart broken a few times. Watching a monster 8plus no doubt swim up to and look at your bait!

Prime months for big bass
Bingo. Which is why im scratching my head about not getting the biggest bass during this time. Only getting them during the warmer months. But getting numbers during the pre spawn isn’t an issue, the size is the issue

Prime months for big bass
I’ve always scratched my head by this. All I hear is fall, winter and early spring(prespawn) is prime time for big bass. But all my biggest bass come from post spawn through summer. I have caught some big fish in the early spring. But majority of my biggest bass have been In the warmer water. I have no problem of getting numbers of fish fall- early spring. 3s and 4s are common , but 5 lbs plus bass are rare. I’ll Fish the hell of a jig and swimbait throughout the cold water season. Toss hair jigs and blades as well. One factor I think is the fact that I’ve always been stuck on shore or my small kayak. No electronics. Also at the mercy of the wind. now I have a small 10 foot boat. I 100% believe that will be a game changer. I’ll have electronics and a trolling motor.

How to be a better jig fisherman
Yep bingo. You don’t know if there’s a log under water you can’t see. I’m trying to imitate a craw. Crawl that jig on bottom. The jig will puff up sand muck and other stuff on bottom that will get the attention of a near by bass.
