Dobyn's Panfish Rod?
I’ve heard good thing about St Croix panfish series and might got one in near future. Be careful not all UL rod act the same. I just got Shimano Sensilite UL 6’6 1/32-3/16, this rod UL alright but more like Bass UL rod not panfish, a lot of backbone with just enough softer tip, I doubt it would handle lowest rating. I do have Daiwa spinmatic 7’ UL which is pretty much noodle but cast well for light lure and if set drag properly can handle big fish as well. Im kind of not so happy with sensilite since my other rod M power 1/8-3/8 can handle the same lure (1/20oz + 2” plastic ~2.3grams) and got pretty much same distance.

Braid size for spinning gear?
You got me interested, I’m looking for something to replace Gliss Line that I use mainly for crappies. How is this line compare to gliss line or other nano line? Gliss line is good and very thin, I use 18lb, but frayed so easily, I’m not talking about at the end of line but in the middle as well.

Need opinion on Shimano friction ring
First of all, I have not used any of my spinning reel for so long. I took out my Shimano sahara 750FB pre fishing to get ready for new Ultralight rod that I ordered for panfish. Low and behold it started binding, I looked around and found a big goop of something black and messy like grease. At home I opened the reel up, cleaned up all black mess (I thought it was old grease, I have not cleaned this reel for long long time) turn out it was Friction ring that melted ???. I checked grease on pinion gear and it still yellow, clear and not dry up. Now I put the reel back together, tried closing the bail manually and with turning handle, it seems the reel still works just usual. I checked website for Friction ring and compare image to my Shimano symetre FL and it is not the same. (Symetre Friction ring got groove but Sahara just smooth like regular o-ring) My question is do I need this Friction ring, I know Friction ring on symetre help prevent the bail to close itself when hard cast, but on Sahara will be use for only 1/32-1/16oz jig head. If I still need it where can I buy it part#7845.

BFS rods
First of all, if you target for Ned rig 1/16oz with 1/2 zinkerz you don’t need BFS for that my Crucial Medium 1/8 - 3/8 with stock Curado 70 or sv 105 can handle that just fine. Now back to your question, I also have 2 of majorcraft L 6.5 (go emotion) and 6.7(benkei) I use this a lot targeting crappies with crappie jig 1/16oz and baby shad, and also use these for finesse fishing for bass. The backbone is pretty good can handle 3-4lbs bass easily but the tip is not soft at all. If you don’t plan to cast a long way or go below 1/16oz the L would serve you well for bass and panfish. Imagine you have a true BFS reel where as mine just regular reel with shallow spool, your should perform even better. I also in market for UL rod targeting panfish alone for 1/32oz jig head, I’d prefer majorcraft but end up got two of the cheap Tsurinoya Proflex ii 6’3 and Dexterity 7’2. These two rods is perfect for panfish with soft solid tip that help playing with paper thin mouth, and can handle my target weight just fine. It might not be good for bass on hook set, I don’t know have caught bass with it, but I have broke the tip (solid tip) on my Daiwa Tatula MXB before. I have been fishing a lot for crappies the last month, didn’t even care much for bass lol.

Weight Estimates! Finally a new PB
I would say up to 5lb easily, that a pretty hefty bass.

Fat Ika
Always have some in my tackle box. It is pretty versatile, can cast a mile away, Sink fast enough that can fish in 10-15 Fow and a good skipping plastic.

Expensive baits vs mid price baits
I have some nice jerkbait from lucky craft and Jackall, I’ll fish it anywhere and don’t mind loosing some. The only one, that I only use once a year and would cry if I loos it, is this one plain old rapala hj08

Aldebaran bfs limited
Questions for you is how much? And where? Lol first hand, I don’t have any experience with the reel itself but it base on 50e series with magnesium frame. It has centrifugal fine tune 8 brake blocks instead of 6 you found on 50e series. I’ve heard that it cast light lure even better than my Aldebaran MG7 (pretty much same frame) with shallow yumeya spool. What weight lure is your target? The Aldebaran in general is pretty smooth, light, small and very comfortable to palm (for me Asian small hand). I can cast my down to 1/20oz jig head with crappies lure with the right rod. Now is the price you gonna pay is not a lot cheaper than new 2016 Aldebaran bfs XG, I would look into newer Aldebaran instead. The newer one has magnetic brake system which make it a lot easier to control, and the adjustable on the fly is a plus. Another option which I almost got it myself is to get new scorpion BFS also sameness magnetic brake on 70 platform and very affordable price. Note to self, I like my scorpion 70 with Ray’s shallow spool more than, Aldebaran and pixy, it can cast same weight further than Aldebaran.

Hey Shimano fans, I got a question

Hey Shimano fans, I got a question
If you compare to the “B” series, I think I will take SLX any day. Compare to D and E series this is different story. SLX is not gonna be as smooth as D or E even curado 70 can’t come close to that department, replaceable yes, better I’m not sure. There are something about made in Japan where made in elsewhere cannot compare. Will I pay for an E at hefty price? No way in hell.

Shimano Crucial Spinning 6'6" Medium power Fast action
Those are gen 2 alright, the best reel seat in my opinion. It would get some used to with bare blank, but the most comfortable you would ever feel. It has nice blank, light and pretty crispy. I would try it with LC 78 or rapala HJ 08 also your choic of spook or whopper plopped 90

Shimano Crucial Spinning 6'6" Medium power Fast action
What gen crucial do you have? Black or green, cork or foam? i still have gen 1 crucial dropshot 6’8 M/XF that I won’t let go, this is in my opinion the best all around rod, I use for everything from weightless trick worm, Senko all the way to small-medium Jerkbait and topwater. If you like finesse the crucial is the best to go, and there is plenty of backbone when you need it. Don’t just look at lure rate, you should try the rod first before making any decision. I lost one of my crucial gen 2 M/F casting 1/8-3/8oz and im still crying until today.

Oldschool Horizontal Jigging
Thank you Tom. I used your technique and caught a bass today. I actually tried your technique a few time already especially at night when fishing from dock and in my kayak. Today while I was reeling my jig passed rock and mud while pointing my rod tip parallel to water and line on my finger, all the sudden the line went slack I set hook and result in a nice 2-3 lber.

Son caught a decent Bluegill
Man your boy is a lot better than me. His fish is about twice the size of my bluegill. In fact this is my very first bluegill that I ever caught. I think I start to like more and more fishing for panfish on light setup.

Less expensive ultralight baitcasters?
While casting and not spinning? It is not only reel but rod play a big part on light lure as well. If you don’t have any I think spinning outfit would be a lot easier and more budget friendly. If you insist on casting wait until @BaitFinessecomment on a reel and rod for you.

Backing your baitcaster line
You got a lot of good info there. As @new2BC4bassmentioned some use backing to help reduce the weight of spool and some to not to use too much of expensive line and still get to 3/4 spool full (for line recovery). Im in both camp most of my reels have braid as backing or full braid or no backing at all. Normally I only spool about 200’ of line, and if my line choice not reach at least 3/4 spool it will get braid. Some of reel for heavy lure, I don’t use backing because the weight of spool is not matter much and I don’t use too of expensive line to worry about saving (big game mono/Izor line). The reels that get braid backing mostly my finesse reels which use 6-10lb line and I don’t want to add unnecessary weight to spool. I only have two reels with braid and those are no backing because with braid I can use all line until I don’t have enough for one long cast. I pick size of reel that match my application, 70, 150 or 200 reel and pick line that would match the reel as well. I use line counter to help when spoiling, and all spool get plumber tape.

Jigs with Trailers vs Jigs without Trailers
I have a few of rage craw and others with one craw or the rip part missing. I normally replace trailer, I might have to give crawless a try.

How much do you spend on your reel vs your rod
Those are two expensive hobbies you got there ?. I didn’t say it, but my wife did. Anyway, what type bike? Small PVC tube in the back might help you regarding longer rod or even more rods.
