Unfortunately my main winter project is rehabbing my shoulder. I believe that I damaged it on my last camping\fishing trip where I misjudged the strength of the tide coming back to the launch. This was in a saltwater inlet on the end of a super moon tide, where a normal 30 minute paddle took 2 hrs of constant paddling which included actually going backwards into a shoal area. It was the first time being scared that this might not end well in 20 years of fishing in a kayak. My son was with me and even asked if channel 16 was the correct channel for calling the Coast Guard. Anyway, my wife was concerned because I did call a Dr and made an appointment. X-rays and a series of movement tests suggested it was a torn rotator. Dr said due to my age (72) that surgery would be the last option, that recovery would take a long time and a strong possibility that it would not take anyway. I told the Dr that unlike the Rolling Stones, time was not on my side. I did get a cortisone shot while there. So off to PT, which I’ve been doing now for a couple of weeks. I’ve been working out for years with my focus on exercises related to paddling a kayak and strength for being able to load and unload the kayak off the roof of my car. I realized that I messed up my shoulder and it wouldn’t just go away when I couldn’t even bench press with an unweighted bar.

Just got back from a 6 day camping trip down in south Jersey. Target fish was Tog, a saltwater bottom fish that live around rocks. Not sure is anyone on here has posted them, they are hard fighting bulldogs. Got 14 one day and 18 another day, we took a break from battling the strong tides that were running and fished a small lake near the campground where we caught some small pickerel. One other day we cut short as there was a strong NW wind 15 to 30 kts, we tried but it was impossible to fish.

Me too, I really missed having Tumbler when the weather got cool. I was in my local Costco and always check their beer section and saw they had a special case from Sierra Nevada, the Fanatic Pack, it had a six pack of Nooner, Ruthless Rye,Flipside and then I saw Tumbler was there too, I think I did a triple take when I saw that. These were only available at Costco and some other big box stores. I went through 3 cases of this and now it's gone.

Hit up a reservoir yesterday, left my camera in my life jacket so posting today, was a little tired. 38 degrees in the morning so in no hurry to get out. On the water at 10, clear blue skies with a NW “breeze” so I wasn’t too confident. 14’ visibility so I figured they would be in deeper water, searched around a bit and found some in 20’ to 28’. Got the first one after a hr, a small Largemouth, then a couple more small ones. Then got a nice Rainbow but with no net when I got it unhooked it slipped out of my hand before I could get a picture. Then got 2 decent Largemouth, then more small ones so I left them to look for Smallmouths, well that didn’t work out. Wind picked up more and it’s a real pain to fish from the kayak with just a paddle, fishing with the rod in one hand and trying to position with the paddle in my other hand/shoulder. Wound up with 12 fish landed, 10 Largemouths, one Rainbow and a Rock bass. All fish on a drop shot and green pumpkin Max Scent flat worm

Reading the Triline 4lb mono thread, my question to you all is what 4lb mono do you like and use? Back in the day I used Stren, but haven't used 4lb in years. I brought Sunline Super Natural 4lb and I'm not impressed with it at all, I can grab it and break it with very little force with my hands (Chuck Norris I'm not)

Got out today as this was my only chance this week, baby sitting the next 2 days then I have to cook a bunch of stuff for my daughters 30th birthday on Saturday. Hit up a lake I haven't fished in a couple of months, it's got a max depth of 12'. Kind of a grind with more wind then predicted and managed 6 fish. 3 largemouth, 1 smallmouth, 1 crappie and 1 perch.

Well, that's that, no brainer is right in my wheelhouse Thanks guys, I was going to do it, I've ordered from Smooth Drag before for my salty stuff.

I have a couple of older Pflueger Supremes with felt drag washers. What's you're thoughts on replacing the felt with carbontex? It's about 8 $ for each reel from Smooth Drag, other wise the reels are in good working condition. I have Daiwa, Abu and Penn reels with Carbon drag washers, which work great with those drags with a real light coating of Cal's grease.

I always back them off when putting them away after a trip, it's just a habit from fishing for over 60 years. I tighten them up when loading them up for a trip, and check again when on the water

Been exclusively kayak fishing for 20 yrs. Before that own several different boats and shoreline fished at lot too. So a lot of the time I’m fishing alone, though I do have several friends who I do kayak fish with at times. Unfortunately like many others here I have lost friends and some that due to health issues are unable to fish anymore. I don’t mind fishing alone though my wife is not too keen on it. I do miss at times the comradery when with others, sharing info and busting on each other. I’m just extremely grateful that I’m still able to get out and do what I do at 71

Got back a couple of days ago from a solo camping trip on the Delaware River. Arrived last Monday and by the time I set up camp didn’t have time to launch the kayak. So fished from shore off the campsite for a hr and was able to land 3 small Smallmouths. Launched the next day on the river and got 14 Smallmouths, took a while to get on them but changed to drifting the current in 7’ of water over gravel with a Nikko Hellgrammite on a 1/8 ned head was the ticket. Next day I headed to a lake I never fished, got a Largemouth and small pickerel right away, and that was it for the day, did lose a good one on a drop shot though. Next day back to the river again, but couldn’t get any kind of consistent bite, wound up with 6 Smallmouths. The last day I wanted to launch at a site that the road to has been closed all year for repairing the road, it was supposed to be opened on Monday, but now they said it would open on Friday, so I waited till after 9am to go there. Well the road was still had the road blocks up so it was now a change of plans. I decided to take a ride to a reservoir I had only fished once a couple of years ago. Wasn’t on the water till 11am, water had a 10’ visibility tried fishing relatively shallow for a while and got nothing. Spoke to a couple different guys on boats and they said it was real slow, they weren’t getting anything either. Fished a little more and couldn’t find anything, so I decided to head back to the ramp fishing along the way. I figured let me check the 28’ to 32’ line on the way back since nothing was happening shallower. Still miffed that the road to the other launch was closed, I probably looked like the kid walking down the dirt road with both hands in his pocket kicking rocks along the way. I finally saw a good size bait ball with some stuff on the bottom, so dropped down a drop shot in a hail Mary attempt. I hook up and it’s a good one, pole bent down into the water and drag going off. Have it on for a good while until I finally able to see it, a big Smallmouth and I even said out loud “don’t jump” I was able to land it and it was the biggest Smallmouth I’ve gotten in many years. Fumbling around for my camera for a quick pic, it shook around and I lost my grip on it and she swam away. Perseverance saved my day, made a great ending to a great trip. Got back to the campsite and spoke with the lady at the office, she said NPS finally opened the road at 1pm Sorry for the long post.
