  1. What lure is the, may give it a try...
  2. 1 medium spinning rod for fineesse 1 medium caster for trebles 1 medium hevy caster for single hooks 1 heavy caster for frogs and flipping thats all you need to fish almost every bass lure, except the extremes like huge glide baits and swimbaits. I recommend saving your money and spending no less than 100 for a rod and 100 for a reel. these reels are super reliable. id be happy to give more advice, just ask!
  3. Got back out to the same spot for the third day. My dad and have have caught a combined 21+25+10 bass in three days. I even got 8 on the fly rod today!
  4. I fished one pond today and lit them up. caught 25 dunks. changed ponds to find bigger fish, but fewer beds. water was muddier, but i could see the big bass. I was using a brown hair jig. caught 2 smaller bass. How long will the big females be on the beds? What should i do to catch them?
  5. I fish a 1 acre pond loaded with a hundred dink bass, some big gills, and 6 50 lb carp, never knew they were there until yesterday.
  6. Got back there today with my dad. he was slaying them in deep water with the ned rig i gave him. I was finishing off the others from yesterday with a hair jig again. Caught 25 there. I moved ponds and noticed 4-5 lbers on beds. caught 2 male dinks.
  7. Luckily the reel I'm looking at has a rubber spool and is braid ready. I meant that with mono or floro, you have the risk of line twist, and with braid, you don't have line twist, but tying a leader is a pita
  8. After school I got to fish a 1 acre pond near my house. I was there from 6-8 PM. The pond is about an acre, with a stream flowing in, and one flowing out (this spot was guided by a goose today). The pond is mostly rock, with some mud near the inflow. The rock is also covered by some decomposing biomass. The water is very clear (5'-10'), but the decomposing plants hinder it to about 3'. I always catch lots of dinks there. Today the water was very warm and some fish were on beds. Almost all were in the shallows, or near the slight drop off. I noticed actual beds, but only a few bass were stuck to the actual beds. I was able to catch most of those fish (10 or so) The other few were cruising the shallows. I was not able to catch any of those. The remaining bass were along the drop off, I realized this too late, but was able to land 10. In between fish 12 and 13 total, I probably got 100 bites. *** I guess. I was in a rush when I came to the pond, and was only able to take a jig rod, crank bait rod, and box of jigs. I started off with a .5oz rattle trap that was tied to my rod. I hooked one second cast but it came off. I then noticed the many fish on beds. I picked ups the jig rod and pitched a .25 oz white finesse jig. I think the hook and jig was too big, because i was spooking lots of fish. I then realized the fish must be too small to eat those baits. In response, I downsized to a .25 oz hair jig. I pitched it near the bedding bass. I caught a fish every 10 minutes or so. After I realized how slow the fishing was with that pattern, I tried a different retrieve. I would cast 15' out, just past the drop off, and hop the jig back. This got me loads of strikes. Caught easily 10 fish this way. It is a shame I realized it so late. I noticed that the fish that were in small groups would furiously attack my jig, but on the fourth cast or so, I was no longer getting bit by the same fish in the same way. It was bizarre. Not sure why, but it happened to 5 different groups of fish. If I caught one from that group, they would also stop biting. I plan to return tomorrow to finish off the rest of em. I also noticed that I was having a hard time hooking up. When I did, the fish were barely hooked. Remember, I am using a light wire hair jig, proportionate to their body size too. Also, there was that period where I couldn't hook a fish. When the fish were aggressive, id get four bites a cast, and then 0 bites a cast. Questions: 1 - Why were the fish in different moods? 2 - Why did the aggressive fish stop biting? 3 - Were my lures too big at first? 4 - Where are the big fish? 5 - What other baits should I be using? 6 - Why were the fish in groups? 7 - Why was my hookup ratio so bad? 8 - Were the fish's jaws weak or something? 9 - Anything else? Thanks!
  9. i have a 1500, looking at the 2500, just for school stripers up to ten pounds and smaller fish than that. it would only be used for that a few times a year, mostly bass and trout. is 300 yds of 10 lb braid too much?
  10. I currently have two spinning reels with braid, one with 30 lb suffix 832 and the other with 20 lb tuf line force. I think tying a leader is a pain, but it is far better than dealing with line twist. I also know exactly where the line will break each time. I am looking at another spinning setup. It is the Quantum Smoke Inshore Combo. It is blue. Would be nice to match the reel and rod with the line, but not a must. I am thinking the blue your Hybrid or red power pro. Looking at 10 lb test and 300 yards all for 1 reel. will be used for trout, bass, and inshore. what do you think?
  11. Headed to Quabbin for Salmon on May 13. Any suggestions or info on the run or the lake?
  12. I found it a really nice rod, just too bad that it doesn't balance well and is very tip heavy. I wouldn't say its a 100$ rod, but 50 is fair game, components seem legit, but it is terribly balanced
  13. Looking at a new spinning setup. I already have a Cabala's Tournament ZX combo. It is a 7' M Fast rod/1500 size reel/ 20 lb braid. I use it for almost everything spinning related. I mainly use a spinning rod, and the techniques i use are (in order of importance): Drop Shot, Keitech, Wacky, and Split Shot. I also do a lot of trout fishing in small streams as well as bass fishing from both the shore and a boat. The combo I am looking at is the Quantum Smoke Inshore. It is a 25 size reel and a 6'3" rod (not sure what action and power). I would likely put a lot of straight 10 lb braid (because it has a rubber spool). Because the inshore version is blue, I would like to consider blue braid. I would also use a leader of mono or floro. That's to be considered later on. I want to use the rod for trout in small streams, schooling stripers in the salt, and bass. What do you think?
  14. I was fishing a 5" floating jerkbait the other day for small pike in a small isolated swimming area of a big lake. It only got down to about 3-4 feet. It also floated nose up. Since I was getting bit with larger jerk baits in deeper water, but not hooking up, because the fish were small, i was forced to innovate. I used a small split shot 6" ahead of my lure. This made the lure run deeper and face nose down. I started getting bit and hooking up. HAs anyone done this before? i recommend giving it a try!
  15. I am always looking to improve the "small things" to give myself an advantage over other anglers, meaning more fish for me and my fishing friends. I understand that with spinning gear, the fish is fought with the rod. meaning one would want their dominant hand on the rod. The opposite is true with casting gear. I am a right-handed person. I first learned to fish with a left hand retrieve spinning setup. When I was ready to graduate to a baitcaster, I figured that it would be easiest to learn with a left hand retrieve. I did not recognize the difference in mechanics of the two types of setups. I recently found a great deal on a discontinued matte black Quantum Smoke 7:1. The only problem was that it is a right-hand retrieve. I also have a newer 7.3:1 Smoke in a LH. I like the power of the drag. One reel will go on a 7' XH F rod with 50 lb braid for frogs; meanwhile, the other will be used on a 7'3" MH F rod with 30 lb braid. Not sure which reel should go on which. Thanks!
  16. My casting skills are not great with the fly. My line is not setup correctly, and my reel is faulty, making it more difficult, but not impossible. I am able to make every other cast lay out flat and straight, with a max rang of like 25'
  17. Several years ago, when I was around twelve years old or so, a close family friend gave me two fly fishing rods and a bunch of flies. I never realized how nice they were until I began fishing more. I have a 5/6 wt 7'6" Browning Fly rod, and a 7' (labelled as 7' but I think 6'6" is more accurate) 4/5 weight Fenwick. Both rods are paired with a Pflueger Medalist reel. One of the reels does not have a working drag. I catch a bunch of small fish with the rods on lures that look like small flying insects. I also caught a spawning bass that way. I am looking into doing more fly fishing. I know my two rods are really nice, but they are older and the reels barely work. I am thinking of getting a new setup. Will be keeping the other rods too. I would likely use the Fenwick for small fish like Perch, Bluegill, Crappie, and Shad. I would like a fly rod that can handle creek trout and smallmouth, but also bass. maybe the Browning can be used for bass if I get two spools? What should I get? I am also looking for advice on what works best and general tips. Lastly, my fly tippett was beat up from practice casting, so I cut the whole thing off. I made a loop knot at the end of my fly line and tied a uni knot with a 4' leader of 8lb floro. It seems to be working well, but Im not sure that is the proper way to rig a fly. I will post pictures of my flies if i get around to it, but I have around 100.
  18. ^ or leech lake Want to go there someday, after watching the never stop tour...
  19. Let's hear some fishing stories! Truth or lie, i don't care.
  20. Yep, old 7' Fenwick, reel is a Pfleuger Medalist. I also have a 7'6" Browning Silaflex and another Medalist. Was given to me by a family friend. Never realized how lucky I was until i started fishing more often.
  21. So its kind of like an anchor, only it keeps you moving? Does it slow the boat down by "catching" in the water and preventing the wind from blowing you away? Is it not hydrodynamic?
  22. I am talking about long leaders for poerbait, I feel like 45* is the best, but for trolling, maybe a little above parallel? Seems to be what they do on youtube
  23. I will be trout fishing this weekend in my new boat. I will be fishing a modified carolina rig. Basically, there is a 1/4 oz weight, swivel, 6' fc leader, and size 8 circle hook. I have four rod holders. In the front, I have two Cabala's 360's. They are really adjustable. In the back, I have two vertical pic pipes attached two the transom. I am wondering what angle I want the rod to be at, compared to the water, in order for maximum sensitivity and so that the fish hook themselves. Do I want vertical rods? Do I want them parallel? Or is 45* best.
