  1. As others have said, it sounds like a rod for soft plastics to me.
  2. I usually like the blue and yellow ones from Garmin. In some lighting, others sometimes green and orange might be better, but blue generally works well in all lighting if I don't feel like changing it where in bright light, green is not good and orange is terrible.
  3. You can catch smallies on full sized jigs - try dragging one with a chunk trailer. But if I am fishing in a lake with only smallies I'm usually going with a smaller size jig like a Strike King Bitsy Bug or a Keitech finesse football jig.
  4. Hello neighbor, from Western Massachusetts.
  5. There's been times I rigged up 5 rods only to use two. Then there's times where I planned to do the same two presentations and they weren't biting and I wish I brought at least another two.
  6. Congrats John! It's getting to that time again as well! I haven't been able to get any free time this week because the kid's hockey schedule (basically every day), and I'm expecting it to change for next week so I'm just waiting for the schedule to get updated.
  7. This is definitely very helpful and I checked the chart against the rods I have personal experience with and it seems very much spot on other than they checked off heavy flipping instead of light flipping for the Marshall (7'3" MH/F) for heavy flipping as others have said.
  8. I have an older Tatula CT, it's a great reel for those applications, although I would go with the 6 speed personally.
  9. My favorite jerkbait rod is my St Croix Mojo Bass 6'8" M/XF. It's a little lighter than the other St Croix mediums, so it basically bends all the way through but not too much at the tip. It's much easier to detect bites on a twitch than with a more moderate tip. And I use mono or fluorocarbon.
  10. Following, because I have a few semi pitted rods. One thing you can do to prevent pitting is to apply U-40 cork sealant to the rods when they are new, but once pitting has happened, I'm not really sure what to do.
  11. I'm always reading stuff and watching various videos to see what people are using and what's working. And I need to break bad habits. I mean I know what to do and when to do it, chances are if I ever give anyone advice, it's legit but at times I get stuck in a rut or get lazy and tend to focus on a handful of presentations too much.
  12. My favorite chain would be Panera. The Chicken Chipotle Avocado melt there is fantastic. My favorite sandwich shops are all smaller locally owned places, my favorite of them all is the Wells General store that's right on the way to Lake St Catherine in Wells Vermont. I forgot about quiznos. They were opening everywhere maybe around 2008 or so but the ones near me didn't seem to last long.
  13. Happy new years everyone! I am hoping 2022 is a better year all around than 2021. I barely got out on my kayak last year, some of it was due to rain and thunderstorms ruining good fishing days and some was just me being behind on everything. In 2022, I will be going on vacation down south in April, getting married in May, my oldest son graduates high school right after that. And now I have waders which will make cold weather fishing much more bearable.
  14. The first time I had it, I made it to my car and tried to go to work. Eventually I couldn't even hit the brake pedal anymore and had to pull over. The next day was notably better, I was supposed to go to a Bruins game with a friend but had to cancel. Wanna see a grown man cry? Convince me to drink a beer, that's all it takes to onset an attack.
  15. Here's the thing with gout, if you only had it once, you probably had a very mild onset. Maybe you could still walk on it without throwing up. The first time I had it was pretty painful, but only lasted a couple of days. The next couple of times at all weren't too bad. At one point I got it in both ankles and one toe and couldn't even walk downstairs for two weeks and had to crawl to the bathroom. Every time since, I usually end up with a full blown fever and throwing up from the pain and that's not even trying to walk on it and that doesn't go away for usually several weeks at this point.
  16. I never liked the Raiders or anything and his time as a coach was before I was even born, but for many years he I appreciated his insight to the game from the broadcasting booth. I understand a lot more about the game because of him than I would if he never went into the broadcasting booth, that's for sure. And he seemed like he'd be a cool guy to sit and talk to etc.
  17. Ouch! Despite having early stages of kidney disease, I have been fortunate enough to have never experienced a kidney stone (although the doctor acts super surprised when I said that and I'm not sure he believes me). But they say it's perhaps the most pain a human can experience. I do get a gout attack several times a year which some say can give it a run for the money though. I see it hasn't taken your sense of humor though. Wish you a speedy recovery.
  18. I have a Steez SV and I have skipped with the brake on either 6 or 8 before (forgot to turn it up). I only birds nested once or twice, but it wasn't too bad. I would be inclined to go for the Tatula Elite over the Tatula SV for lures you straight up cast like jerkbaits (except real light ones). They cast further. The SV will cast real light ones better, or maybe normal sized ones if your rod is too heavy. I have been using a SV for crankbaits and sometimes jerkbaits (sometimes I use a Pflueger Patriarch which I also use for poppers because I use the same rod for both) and wish I had bought a Tatula Elite instead, thinking about buying one myself.
  19. Well the 7.4:1 is real nice for jigs and T-rigs, but that is a bit fast for most moving baits and especially crankbaits. 6.2:1 also works for jigs and T-rigs just fine, the faster reel is just nice to take up extra slack quickly when a fish comes from 20 feet down and darts at the boat so you don't have to reel too fast. Personally, I find it much easier to speed up than slow down. While you can get away with 2 pins in and keeping the dial cranked to 5 or 6, I am finding that with centrifugal brakes generally regardless of manufacturer, they generally work best if you keep 4 pins in, and unlike magnetic brakes it hardly limits your casting distance. With the Shimanos, a lot of it depends on lure weight and the rod but if you set the dial at 4, that works well a lot of the time.
  20. I was about to suggest maybe going a little bolder and stepping up to the Expride. The new Zodias (and even the new Curado) are supposed to be real good too, but if you're buying a rod that you'll likely take with you every trip (like a MH/F ?) and not a utility style rod then might as well make that jump.
  21. I have used braid to fluoro or sometimes mono in the past, mainly for the ability to change my leader length. I didn't have any real issues with it and the only real downside was having to take the time to tie on a leader. Since my rod and reel arsenal has increased, I have a few more reels than the rods I normally carry with me so I can usually find a reel with the appropriate line on it for the job. I still run braid to leader on spinning gear mainly because I find it handles better and on my M/F spinning rod, I sometimes change out the leader between 6 and 8lb line as well. Both lines have their pros and cons: Pros for braid: - Better sensitivity on tight line. - Thinner diameter makes up for more visible line and makes for better casting distance Pros for straight fluorocarbon: - Maintains some sensitivity on slack line - More invisible in the water - It's quicker, just tie on a bait and go! I definitely have caught more fish on straight fluorocarbon, but I've also learned a lot on from the time I was using braid and can chalk the vast majority of the difference up to that.
  22. Tough choice, but I would wager the DX744C would be pretty good T-Rig rod and for lighter and finesse jigs that could also handle moving baits pretty good. I would be inclined to keep it and also add a DX745C myself. That would be a two rod pair that I would bring out with me a lot.
  23. Most of my success has been in later spring or later August or September at night, shore. fishing
  24. Funny, my first thought was the same thing but different reasons. It seems that there are days when the bass hit red, they smash red. But if it's not one of those days it's a guaranteed way to get skunked with no in between. So I rarely use a red crank.
