I realize not everyone may have all of these sandwich joints where they live, so you can also just add your own.

Subway

Jimmy Johns

Quiznos

Jersey Mikes

Firehouse Subs

Potbelly

Blimpie

I personally prefer a hot sandwich so Potbelly gets my vote with Quiznos second.

  • I like Jersey Mike’s. Their #13 The Original Italian is pretty good. But the cheesesteak pales in comparison to a great cheesesteak from any decent hoagie or sub shop in eastern PA, DE, NJ or MD. Mayb

You guys should try a Vietnamese Bahn Mi grilled pork sandwich on a baguette with an iced coffee. Tasty!

  • My company's corporate office and warehouse is right down the street from there on Grand Halstead, and Milwaukee. Have you ever stopped in at Maillards Tavern? It shares the lot with my warehouse

Quiznos is still a thing? They disappeared around here years ago.

Goodcents has the best fresh bread and makes really good sandwiches. Potbelly makes a really nice sandwich too.

Lee's Hoagie House

Curlys

As far as chains go Jersey Mike's and Wawa are decent.  Local mom & pop places are 99% of the time better though

Where I live, we have a Sonic, a burger joint and a BBQ place. A guy that is on the fire dept. with me just put in a sandwich shop. He makes really good sandwiches, soups and salads. I usually get a wrap because I am not much of a bread guy, but I did try is bread and it is really good as well. A lot better and cheaper than the chains IMO.

Bread is without question the most important part of any sandwich in my opinion.  The other stuff matters of course but without a solid bread, it ruins everything .

It just fills me up. LOL

The Firehouse - Italian Fully Involved would be my favorite. They also use Boar's Head meats. There's a couple of the others listed in town but I only go into town every 5 years.

Use to eat at Quiznos at least once a week for a few years. We moved out of the area, where we are now, there are none, sadly.

For chains/convenience- I always do Jimmy Johns or Jersey Mikes. I loved Heidi’s when I lived in Denver and DC, but it looks like their east coast expansion failed.

Add me to the group that prefers a local deli - there’s something about a sandwich on good bread that feels like your Uncle Sal just made it.

Do I ever miss Quiznos!

There aren’t any mom and pop shops around here unfortunately.

There are two Blimpies in our area and I think three in the whole state. I love the buffalo chicken wrap.

Then I’d go with Subway as number two.

Firehouse is pretty dang good!

Jersey Mikes has potential but IMHO there’s too much bread.

Jimmy Johns their sub bread is too hard for me so I’ll do a regular sandwich.

I’ve never tried Potbelly’s, there are a couple in the big city. I’ll have to give them a try sometime.

I can’t forget Arby’s market fresh sandwiches! That bread is absolutely awesome! I wish I could just buy a loaf a week. Their wraps used to be good but they changed the tortilla and it’s not good at all anymore. Their gyros are pretty good too.

Before the franchise, the original Subway was on the Drag at UT campus in Austin.  It was worth driving to.  The problem with franchises is how the quality can vary.  The Subway close to my office isn't worth visiting, because the salad and spinach is always wilted to rotten.  A few miles away, there's another that always has fresh fixings and fresh bread.

Tacquerias are more important in S. Texas.  The farther south you go, the better they get.

When you see one that is stacked with cars at an odd hour, pull over.

On a trip from Reynosa, hunger forced a stop at a Taco Bell in Brownsville.

The family that owned the place had the franchise pegboard menu and their home menu on a chalkboard - it was outrageously good.

Jersey Mikes is the best chain by far. Try the tuna and the cheesesteak. These are as good as it gets anywhere. The cheesesteak is better than anything you can get in Philadelphia.

I miss Quiznos. I don’t eat a lot of sandwiches, but when they were open a block away from my work I was in there a few times a week.

@12poundbass - I will 100% agree with you - The bread at the JJs near my work is always day-old or hard or over baked, but the one near my house is like fresh doughnuts. I have definitely seen a big variance in their bread based on how the store is run!

There’s been one time where I had JJs and by the end of the sub my jaw wasn’t ready to fall off. The flavoring is good but my jaw muscles don’t need a heavy duty workout to enjoy it.

I used to love quiznos but they disappeared around here. My favorite now is firehouse subs. The bread is always fresh, no matter which one you’re at. I grew up with one of the founders. I heard they just sold to the same corporation that owns burger king.

Ive eaten a lot of subway too , but the bread is often too old and it gets puffy and chewy. They don’t give you enough meat to offset it , and then they try to sell you extra meat. Daily Shell station delies are similar.

I tried Jimmy Johns once. I’ll leave it at that…

Our local publix makes great subs, but it’s very slow , because so many people like them.

Maybe if you only had the tourist trap Pat’s or Geno’s could I even come close to agreeing with you. It’s not even close.

That’s comparable to saying a “Maryland-style” crabcake from Long John Silvers in better than any crabcake in Baltimore. ?

I’m a little embarrassed to ask this for some reason.

Does Chic-Fil-A qualify as a sandwich shop?

  • Super User

Jersey Mikes if I could pick only one, but not many left around here. Subway is where I go most. Agree with the comments on Arby’s Market Fresh subs. Also, when I was a teenager, the ladies in the deli at my local K-mart made the best sandwiches. I’d walk or ride my bike over there durng lunch break while in school several times a week.

Maybe - but I avoid them like the plague...reasons.

I recently had Jersey Mikes about a month ago for the first time and that's the one I had.  It was pretty solid.  Definitely good enough to get again.

Sure why not

You left out Portillos.  Italian Beef trumps all on that list.  There are better beefs...but you only listed chains so I thought I would as well.
