Favorite sandwich shop

I agree The best National chain is Portillo’s.
The worst is Subway. They give the least amount of meat than any other.

But the best sandwich shop above all Is Johnny’s Italian Beef on North Ave in Elmwood Park, a west Chicago suburb.

  • I like Jersey Mike’s. Their #13 The Original Italian is pretty good. But the cheesesteak pales in comparison to a great cheesesteak from any decent hoagie or sub shop in eastern PA, DE, NJ or MD. Mayb

You guys should try a Vietnamese Bahn Mi grilled pork sandwich on a baguette with an iced coffee. Tasty!

  • My company's corporate office and warehouse is right down the street from there on Grand Halstead, and Milwaukee. Have you ever stopped in at Maillards Tavern? It shares the lot with my warehouse

You left out Portillos.  Italian Beef trumps all on that list.

Portillos is solid no doubt about it. The classic Italian beef sandwich is tasty.

The one I occasionally go to in Maple Grove was closed a month because they didn’t have enough staff to stay open. Not even the pick up window was open.

In the Chicago suburbs, there is a chain called Mr Sub. Great subs at half the price of Firehouse or Jersey Mikes.

You guys should try a Vietnamese Bahn Mi grilled pork sandwich on a baguette with an iced coffee. Tasty!

Before the franchise, the original Subway was on the Drag at UT campus in Austin.  It was worth driving to.  The problem with franchises is how the quality can vary.  The Subway close to my office isn't worth visiting, because the salad and spinach is always wilted to rotten.  A few miles away, there's another that always has fresh fixings and fresh bread.

Tacquerias are more important in S. Texas.  The farther south you go, the better they get.

When you see one that is stacked with cars at an odd hour, pull over.

On a trip from Reynosa, hunger forced a stop at a Taco Bell in Brownsville.

The family that owned the place had the franchise pegboard menu and their home menu on a chalkboard - it was outrageously good.

Bernie’s General store, three blocks from home, has the best sandwiches my city.

Their steak-egg-cheese does wonders for a hangover.

A majority of the Jersey Mike’s regular-sized subs clock in at over 1,000 mg of sodium. A regular size Buffalo Chicken Cheese Steak registers an eye-popping 3,513 mg of sodium. That is significantly more salt than a healthy person should have in an entire day! And it is more than double the daily limit for most LoSo eaters.

I used to go to a cheese steak place until I saw how much sodium is in their BREAD alone! It is recommended that people eat less than 2000 mg of sodium a day.

I taste salt in everything these days from hamburgers to Boston Market. It's disgusting. I make my own food more and more because of this, not to mention the added sugar they use.

So my favorite sandwich shop is my kitchen! All the other ones I've ever liked are small mom and pops shops.

Jimmy John's.   Partial to the hard baguette.  Vito,  easy oil and vinegar, add mayo

Out here in the Philly burbs Pudges and Pudges II gets a lot of rant and rave. They are pretty good but I prefer Jersey Mike’s and Lou’s.

The Penn Station grilled subs are excellent.   Hope you got a cookie to.  They’re very good.

We are in a sandwich dead zone around me. Only 2 available are jimmy johns and subway. I don't mind jimmy johns but I can make a better sandwich at home. My old lady loves Subway but I think it sucks.

I drive around all day at work, I used to eat a good many subway sandwiches. I thought I was being a good boy by not getting burgers and fries. I can’t stand the smell of those sandwiches but I’m also not a picky eater, I just eat to keep on living.  Once I quit eating subway I lost 10 lbs immediately haha. Go figure. At least now I don’t smell like subway anymore, but I sure can’t be eating the $12-$15 sandwiches anywhere else

That's refined bread flour for you buddy. Amazing what your body can do when you aren't poisoning it with 500% your daily intake of carbohydrates. Problem is bread is d**n delicious and the perfect vehicle to get even more delicious various meats and cheeses to your face.

Yeah it’s crazy. When you start hunting around for lunch without bread or a tortilla, you end up hunting a good bit. I eat a lot of boiled eggs now, maybe my heart will explode but at least I lost that 10 lbs! Hahahaha

One of my co workers cut bread out of his diet and he lost 40 pounds in 3 months.

I usually bring a lunch to work and if I eat takeout I usually try to support our community eateries. In a pinch though I don’t mind a D’Angelo sandwich.

You probably don’t know D’Angelo’s outside of New England.
