  2. Hey Mike! That's been my position too, but in a casual conversation with some of the guys at Kentucky Lake, Big-O told a story that struck me as a revelation: Although the lure you are fishing may be exactly the right choice for a specific situation and produce several bites, the "right" color might double your success. According to Big-O, some of the pros he works with demand some very specific, custom colors. I'm still pondering this, but being last on the list may still be an important part of the list. -Kent 8-)
  3. Two of our sponsors offer outstanding products: MegaStrike for a "dead shad" scent and VERY convenient application. JJ's Magic for strong garlic and color. I use JJ's for jig trailers and MegaStrike for everything else. MegaStike is also recommended as a lubricant for swimbaits. 8-)
  4. A very good observation and excellent advice! 8-)
  5. Not just during the spawn, but all of the time. They also prefer current if that's an option. 8-)
  6. For swallowed hooks, learn this method: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1128002349/22#22 If that doesn't work, cut the line and hope for the best.
  7. I suspect a lot of "misses", aren't! Bass sometimes simply bite the tail, especially smaller fish. You're going to miss most of these since the hook never comes into play. 8-)
  8. That's a fatty...Nice pic! 8-)

  13. If unfavorable conditions persist, there may be a point where the eggs are reabsorbed and no spawn occurs that year for individual fish. Water temperatures at Kentucky Lake dropped ten degrees last week while we were there and the fish bite changed dramatically. Most of our fish were bloated with eggs, but my best fish of the trip was post-spawn. My point is, there is a great deal of variability even among bass in virtually the same location and water temperatures. 8-)
  14. Hmm... Neither. Consider the Avid AVC66MF which has a soft tip. This is an "all-around" rod for treble hook lures, spinnerbaits and buzzbaits. It's especially well suited for jerkbaits and topwater, too! 8-)
  15. They simply wait for the water to warm. 8-)
  16. Well, back to Lake Fork: If some percentage of the bass population "learn" anything individually or over generations, then every retarded fish in Texas would have to call Lake Fork home. :
  17. Generally, "match the hatch" is applicable to trout, not bass. However, the Cali boys can make a strong argument that big trout swimbaits fit this theory. On the otherhand, Randal does well on the same or similar lures in Georgia lakes that have never produced a single trout! Maybe some presentations of various worms act something like baitfish, but I would argue that for the most part, they don't represent anything "natural". So, my observation is that bass will strike: (1) just about anything that looks edible; (2) something that catches their attention (reaction); or (3) invades their territory. But... sometimes "match the hatch" works, too! 8-)
  18. I have not tried it, but will look forward to your report! 8-)
  19. Jerkbait would be my first choice. 8-)

  24. Personally, I don't intentionally fish for bedding bass. However, I have turned around on the issue itself. Many researchers have written that bed fishing has no impact on bass populations and in fact may be beneficial for some bodies of water (overpopulated). Lake Fork is a case in point: I have never been to another lake that was fished so hard, especially during the spawn. Yet, the lake continues to produce numbers and size! 8-)
