  2. When you have a really BIG fish on, you don't need any distractions. The fish of a lifetime doesn't come along everyday. That's what I prepare for, seriously. With a perfectly set drag you will also get maximum performance from your equipment. You can put all the "heat" you want on a fish without any concern about breaking your line or rod. Several seasoned members have stated on this thread that they have NEVER been broken off. It's only happened once to me and it broke my heart, but that had nothing to do with my drag. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1226342926/0 8-)
  3. Welcome aboard! Maybe we can get together next fall. I fish the Tennessee River below Pickwick, but I like your portion of the river much better. We fish yellowtail too when they are available, but find the brown fish have a preference for farm raised green minnows. I think several varieties are native, but still not common. Maybe the smallmouth think the green ones are a treat. I have heard slick minnows are their favorite prey, but they are impossible to fish. You'll like it here, especially the smallmouth section. 8-)

  5. Looks like you have it covered Bud Well now...That's a quite a statement. Pay attention guys, these are our friends and they know this lake. Thank you! -Kent
  6. Gotta state a price to get pertinent advice, but here's a start: Shimano Citica CI200E, CH50MG, Curado CU200E7 or Core 8-)
  7. Reel down to pick up slack and quickly snap your wrist without moving the position of your hands relative to your body. It's all about speed, not power. 8-)
  8. That's great! Congratulations to your son. 8-)

  10. It temporarily cures "fat & ugly", too! ;D ;D
  11. You might find a used Citica D for around $50. Keep an eye on our Flea Market or e-bay if you trade there.

  13. I'll bet there are members here who have hooked up with their PB while working on a backlash! Some of my best largemouth last year were caught while "playing" with my equipment. One memorable instance was casting to the middle of a local pond so I could "walk" my new line and stretch it out a bit. Well, it turned out to be overlapped from the get-go, so I took it all the way down to the knot. After walking back to my original spot, retrieving line under pressure at the reel, I was good-to-go after 10 - 15 minutes, maybe a little longer. So, now I'm ready to reel up to start fishing again and wouldn't you know, I'm hung-up in the middle of the pond! 8 lbs later I landed the snag. ;D ;D
  14. You're killin' me...GREAT post!
  15. Okay... Please help moderate the website, we're all in this together. Some websites have been filtered for a variety of reasons, some of which are imposed on us. Copyright questions might be an example. There are very few (fishing) websites on the filtered list, but we need everyone's cooperation to maintain the integrity of the system. Your help is greatly appreciated. Please use your BassResource.com personal message function or e-mail to exchange edited messages. I hope you find this to be a minor inconvenience, no one is being singled out. -Kent

  17. No hard jerkbaits, topwater, buzzbaits, Rat-L-Traps, deep divers or spoons? Fat Ika is mandatory, whether it works or not! Plus, I have two new "Secret Lures" you're going to like a lot. :-/

  19. Seeing is believing... A couple of weeks ago I was at a BPS fish tank demonstration by Mike Whitten, BPS Staff Pro and writer for GYCB. Mike fished a Carolina rig with a 1 oz slip weight. The key is keeping the weight on the bottom and maintaining contact with your rig at all times. The movement was with the reel ONLY. When the C-rig is retrieved with the weight dragging the bottom, the bait pops up! If you jerk it with your rod, the bait just moves forward. Another feature of dragging a weight is kicking up debris which often attracts the attention of any near-by bass. The action can be fast or slow, but slow is usually the ticket. Hook-set is ALWAYS a long, horizontal sweep and constant pressure when fighting the fish. Never let the fish stall, it's either pulling drag or coming your way. 8-)
  20. JUST and fourbizz are resident experts on this topic. Both throw big baits and catch giant bass. They have experimented with lots of gear, I suggest you heed their advice. 8-)
  21. I don't think the reel specifications are "recommended size", this information is just about reel capacity. With today's copolymers and braids, you can reach 25 "lb test" easily with thinner line diameters. As an an example, a commonly used braid is 50/12. With copolymers, Yo-Zuri Hybrid #15 is .016" diameter, 21.5 lb test and all you would ever need for freshwater fishing. BTW, Welcome aboard! 8-)
  22. I fish the original Slug-Go, weightless, in and around any type of cover. The technique is to twitch the lure so it acts like a feeding minnow. NEVER set the hook until you feel the weight of the fish, then set it hard! 8-)
  23. My take: Pointers the majority of the time; X-Rap when fish are very active. Rapala calls the X-Rap a "slash bait". The action is significantly different. Where the Pointer is often fished slow (extended pause), the X-rap is usually fished in constant motion. I fish 100 and 128 Pointers. I only fish the small XR08 X-Rap. 8-)
  24. Look who's back! Hey Chris! Good to see you here. 8-)
  25. Yeah, my 20 year old daughter is the Food Nazi and has taken charge of my treats...Real Smuckers jelly and jams are great, Reduced Sugar SUCKS! To add insult to injury, she makes me eat it on dirt bread with fake butter. Anyone up for a little tofu & bean sprouts? >
