STATE VS STATE FINAL RESULTS
I guess I should have posted, but the brown fish I caught on artificials weren't very interesting. Had the contest not been "artificial only", the story could have been a little different. 8-)

Shimano Curado 100D/200 vs Quantum Tour Edition PT1160
Welcome aboard! We have some Quantum fans, but not many. The brand has had issues with dependabilty and quality control over the years. I'm a Shimano fan, but many members are Daiwa, Abu Garcia and Pflueger enthusiasts. There are a number of choices at your pricing point, but I wouldn't be looking at Quantum. 8-)

Berkley Sensation Line
Welcome aboard! It's been awhile, but Sensation was one of the worst lines I ever recall using. The line breaks easily and cannot be trusted. I visited the website and notice "NEW!" Well, so the new may be a different line, but burnt once, I will not try the "new". (Same goes for Vanish) :

Rod for topwater
Welcome aboard! I don't generally throw lures that light, but when I do I use a Fenwick Techna AV AVS70MM spinning rod. This is 7' Medium Power/ Moderate Action. The rod loads up and cast light lures a mile! The same blank is offered in a baitcaster, AVC70MM. 8-)

NEW PB :)
Congratulations! That's a fine fish. Regarding the picture. I have been catching some nice fish on a new "secret pond". Last week I caught a fine fish that was probably something north of 7 lbs. I don't usually carry a camera when bank fishing because the pictures just aren't interesting, but on this particular outing I had the camera. I had another fisherman take two pics, but I guess he thought I just wanted photos of me! I am not going to post the pic because the fish looks like it weighs about 1 1/2 lbs! Full of me, head to toe, but the bass didn't come out worth a mention. So, pictures can compliment a catch, but that is not always the case. 8-)

Rigged Grubs For Smallies
I view grubs fished by themselves on a jig head as shad/ minnow immitations. That's why I prefer single tails. I don't jig them, I fish grubs with a steady retrieve at different depths until I find the right one! I only use double tail grubs as jig trailers. This is a relatively small and compact profile, which is sometimes the ticket. I consider the double tail a representation for a crawdad, not a baitfish. Now, since you already have double tails, fish them with the steady retrieve and see what happens. I suspect it makes no difference whether the tail is single or double! Sometimes we "overthink" all these "rules" when discussing presentations. 8-)

Noob question :)
Sounds like you may be tying it wrong or not wetting it before you cinch it, wetting the line with spit prevents it from heating up from the friciton caused when cinching it which leads to failure of the knot. I have been using the palomar exclusively for everything for about 7 years now and haven't had hardly any knot failures, have strightened quite a few hooks and seivels with it though. Hmm... The strongest knot? Easiest to tie? Proven over time? I think you need to practice a little more, maybe slow down and pay attention to every detail. The best way to practice this or any other knot is with a small diameter cotton rope. If you employee this suggestion, by seeing the procedure in greater detail, your mind will have a better comprehension of the mechanics involved. Regarding switching lures: I think the best approach is to have several rods rigged up. This way you can fish different techniques at various depths. On any given outing, bass may focus on the bottom (jigs and soft plastics); subsurface "moving lures" (crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinnerbaits); or topwater (Spooks, Sammy, buzzbait). You never can be sure until you give a couple a try. 8-)

Ok!!!!! TIMES UP. I'm frustrated now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Line strength vs. diam
Welcome aboard! P-Line is about 40% stronger than indicated by its diameter, i.e., 10 lb line = 14 lb breaking strength. Yo-Zuri Hybrid is even stronger: #6 = 11.9 lb breaking strength, #12 = 19.5. 8-)

Here is another thread for you: http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1180501296/10 Regarding the hook-up for soft plastics: When you detect a bite, lower your rod tip while reeling downquickly. When you have eliminated slack or feel the fish, snap your wrists forcefully as you raise the rod tip to 11 or 12 o'clock. This is called a "quick-set" or "snap-set". Keep the position of your hands relative to your body constant. All of the leverage and energy is transferred by the rod. Good luck! 8-)

making the run?
Man, it's my favorite part of watching tounament fishermen: "They're over there!" If you guys spent twice the time on half the water you would catch four times the fish. After a few hours you could cull the 12", 3/4 lb fish and go after 1 1/2 pound kickers! :

Tubes for smalles?
Generally, 3 1/2" Mizmo, Kent's Classic (squash green) on a 1/8 oz jig head. For particularly snarley conditions, same tube, 3/0 EWG Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hook, T-rigged, unpegged. 8-)

best line for rocks?
Braid frays and cuts... XT or Big Game is fine. P-Line CXX, Yo-Zuri Hybird/ Ultra Soft, Gamma, other copolymers plus all fluorocarbons will work. Abrasion resistance is an attribute not associated with braid. 8-)

Old timers vs New Guys
Seems like the "old timers" caught a few bass without depthfinders, trolling motors, supersensitive rods, high tech lines or "bass" boats. Perhaps they were much more innovative fishermen than today's professional anglers. With all the modern technology, why wouldn't they be just that much better? 8-)

10.2 pound MA bass
Great fish! 8-)

my other nephews 1st bass!!
Too cool! 8-)
-
Ika was $$$ today!
My observation is that the Fat Ika catches about the same percentage of bigger bass as the 6" Senko. More quality bass, but lower numbers than the 5" Senko. 8-)

was i wrong?

Which Avid to whom
Really, it's not that big a deal and "occasional fishermen" won't know the difference, anyhow. 8-)

Toledo Bend info needed
Well, Catt is Mr. Toledo Bend, so I guess you received the right information from exactly the right guy! Congratulations on the win. 8-)
-
Which Avid to whom
I don't think it matters, but extra fast is the better action for soft plastics. Medium Power/ Fast Action would make for a better "all-around" rod. 8-)
