  1. Is that for tying knots? I was going to use 20/6 braid, but I was going to use heavier backing than 6#. That's probably fine, we rarely (never) get to the knot anyhow.
  2. Whether it's braid or any other line, I would suggest using the same diameters for both backing and the line you fish. I like to have 80-100 yards of "usable" line so I have at least two cast lengths and enough to spare so I don't feel the knot. If you're trying to save your good line, 50-60 yards is probably enough. 8-)
  3. So how does that work? When you place your next order for another Japanese swimbait and you pay your $50, do they send you the front half, the back half or slice it in two lengthwise? :
  4. ;D ;D ;D ;D WOW! ;D ;D ;D ;D 8-)
  5. Maybe. The trade-off is a little greater casting distance which is sometimes important when bank fishing. But...I don't have trees around the ponds I fish from shore, so I didn't really consider that problem. :-?
  6. Man, this is heartwarming: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,329513,00.html 8-)
  7. The ball's in your court this weekend. Good luck! 8-)
  8. I hope you have our meatballs hidden in a safe house: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,329405,00.html :
  9. See if you can find a St. Croix Avid AS70MF on sale for around $100 and match that up with the new Shimano Stradic 2500FI. 8-)
  10. It looks like they are going to release some water for us, downstream, too! Pickwick Dam: 2/07 70,000 cfs 2/08 72,000 2/09 55,000 ;D ;D ;D ;D
  11. If you closely examine most knots, many are VERY similar! Uni, Trilene, Improved Clinch and San Diego Jam are all good examples. The fundamental difference with the San Diego Knot is that the line is wrapped on the outside of the main lines and effectively creates a noose. This is a very "pretty" knot when tied properly. 8-)
  12. It's fun to tie. I use it sometimes with heavier line: http://www.netknots.com/html/sd_jam.html 8-)
  13. Welcome aboard! 8-)
  14. You are going to need to work a little harder on spelling, punctuation and grammar. BTW, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! ;D ;D
  15. Thanks guys. The situation was life threatening. At the time, the feeling was surreal. I was not "scared" but concerned for the welfare of my family. Without a basement or truely adequate protection, we chose our best option. We have had watches and warnings before, so I am prepared as best I can be. I have a somewhat protected room off of my garage, my fishing room! So, we have emergency provisions stored and ready. The National Weather Service and our local television stations tracted the storm on a minute-to-minute basis and everyone that was paying attention had plenty of warning. At around 5:30 we were told that the strongest cell would reach Germantown at 5:56 and it did! My wife, daughter, two cats and the dog were all in my room huddled together. It was REALLY quite an experience.
  16. Or, if you are fishing from the bank and cast parallel to the shore, you can "walk it off" for a pretty close estimate. Also, if you want to be "scientific" you can count the number of crank turns during retrieve and work the math. IPC (inches per crank) or sometimes referred as IPT (inches per turn) are specific to each reel. (Technically, this is an average as the EXACT retrieve varies slightly. The specifications are for a "full spool"). From a practical standpoint, an "average" cast is 25-30 yards. Twice that (50-60 yards) is probably as far or further than anyone actually casts for fishing. 8-)
  17. Another rod that gets GREAT reviews from those that own them is the BCR854. I know I "need" one! :
  18. If I only had one rod: G.Loomis GLX MBR844C. I have mine saddled with a Shimano CTE200GT. This is my jig rod, but it would also be my choice for soft plastics if I fished a baitcaster. For all soft plastics I prefer spinning tackle. I fish a St. Croix Legend Elite ES70MF/ Shimano Stella 2500 FB. 8-)
  19. It doesn't have to be complicated: Spinning tackle: Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #6 (.010" diameter, 11.9 lb test) Baitcasting gear: Yo-Zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft #12 (19.5 lb test) 8-)
  20. I fish Shimano reels exclusively. Five of my rods are St. Croix, three Avids and two Legend Elite. Two of my rods are G.Loomis GLX. Although I prefer G. Loomis, I have been able to buy St. Croix at substantial discounts. I think G. Loomis is a better rod, but St. Croix is often a better value. I like both brands and think your friend will like whichever he chooses. This is what I consider my "core" rigs and all I really "need": G. Loomis GLX MBR844C/ Shimano CTE200GT. This is my jig rig. St. Croix Legend Elite ES70MF/ Shimano Stella 2500FB. All soft plastics. St. Croix Avid AC66MF (soft tip)/Shimano Calais. All treble hook lures, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits. 8-)

  22. Memphis ranks near the top in ever category of crime, this is one of the most dangerous cities in America. We need more law enforcement personnel, but felons need not apply. Recruitment of police officer candidates is relatively easy, funding is always the issue. Memphis and all surrounding communities have mixed race departments. There are occasional issues within departments, but isn't that the case in any organization? From the perps point of view, a cop's a cop.
  23. The latest update is that we had 9 tornados touchdown in the metropolitan area and 52 people killed as a result of the storm. The regional destruction involves portions of 9 states! Total damage reports are still being tabulated, but Union College in Jackson, TN was virtually destroyed. The National Weather Service has determined that some of these storms developed #4 category status.
  24. Yeah, that's how it is around here, too. p.s. I finally got in touch with Jens. Thank you!
