There are a lot of good rods in your price point and even below. For me maneuverability is most important when looking for a rod that is stroked down such as a jerkbait, spook, fluke. Then I want to make sure the top 6-8 inches of the rod is nice and soft. I want to be able to work the bait with the tip, not the backbone. And with a fluke I really want to be able to stroke the bait without blowing it out. But you also need enough backbone to set the hook and handle the fish. In most applications a medium power fast action rod is about right. But each maker is different. And you want to make sure the rod power matches the hook diameter and cover. Ive been use a Dobyns Champion 683 for a year or so now and have caught plenty of bass on a fluke. It may not be the perfect fluke rod but it’s performed flawless for me.

Unfortunately there’s no way to know what you will like or not until you fish with the rod. Either borrow one from a teammate/friend or just bite the bullet and buy a couple. You can always sell a rod if you don’t like it. Facebook buy and sell pages are your friend. Just be careful of scammers but they are pretty obvious. For the record I’ve bought and sold many rods and reels. After years of trial and error I’ve settled on mainly Falcon rods. I do have several Dobyns, Shimano, and Kistler sprinkled in. Every rod line seems to have one or two that really shines. Don’t limit yourself by just one brand.

My order was invoiced on 9/5 but has still not shipped. Apparently they are still having staffing issues. An Orvis order made the same day arrived yesterday morning

Rick Scott came up with idea of B.A.S.S at Ross Barnett, my home lake, during a rained out fishing trip. He was sitting at the hotel watching other pro sports and thought why not fishing. Bill Dance and Roland Martin dominated the early tournaments at Barnett but Bobby Murray won the Classic. It’s sad that they’ve pretty much given up on coming back to Barnett after Connell’s victory back in 2017. The state fisheries department has all but ruined the lake and tournament weights have steadily dropped each year. I love watch old tournament coverage on YouTube though. It’s crazy how far the sport has come but watching guys yank in 6 pounders on spoons and worms with a 6 foot rod and ambassadors never gets old

I really enjoy my Kistler KLX graphite crankbait rod. It’s my go to squarebill rod A 3 power Dobyns will throw cranks fine. The Sierra series would be best since they have a slower taper Best cheap option would be Falcon Buccoo from sportsman’s outfitters. They have several crankbait models on sale for $69. Great rod for the price.

I’m not a fan of pegging around wood. If I need a fixed weight I’ll throw a jig 90% of the time. Otherwise I throw as light of weight as possible and slowly pull the worm through the brush. Typically I will let the weight fall over the cover a second or two before pulling the plastic over. It slows the fall and keeps the bait in the strike zone longer. Also I prefer shorter plastics around wood. Typically I go with a creature/craw style bait

I ordered Friday and it won’t ship until Thursday. I’ll probable receive it middle of next week. I just ordered a few random small items so it’s certainly no biggie but it is interesting considering others will have their orders by the time mine ships and we ordered the same day

If it’s anything like Katrina you have to watch out for those whackjobs that drive down from the Midwest trying to retire early off people who need to get a clue. Bad part is it worked

The Expert is a really really nice rod. It’s super crisp and has a bit faster action than the Cara. It’s one of the most sensitive rods I’ve owned and just feels alive. That said I will definitely buy a new Cara too

I throw most of my lighter swim jigs on a falcon Cara head turner. However I throw heavier jigs into cover using either a Kistler Helium 73 heavy or Shimano Zodias 72 heavy. Typically I prefer the 1/4 or 3/8 oz jigs though.

All star used to be a really good rod when the Crawford family owned them. But it was sold to Shakespeare around 2004 and are Chinese made now. The original all star rods were American made except the cork

Few years back I picked up a gen 1 shield for $230 brand new. It’s a great shooting gun. I’m sure the Sig is great too but double the cost. Not sure it’s double the gun

With today’s boat you have to factor in electronics too. They depreciate much faster than a boat. $10k worth of electronic add ons may only be worth $5k a year later. The smart money on any boat is to buy about 10 years old and sell after 5 years. You typically come close to breaking even and in the right circumstance could even sell for more than you paid. For instance if you buy a 2008 Ranger or Bass Cat for $22k and fish it for 5 years you will be able to sell for close to $20k with proper upkeep. The key is to be patient and find the right boat. But if I’m buying new I’d def buy a higher end brand that depreciates less. More importantly buy a boat that others desire. If you watch the classifieds you will notice trends.

Your equipment is not ideal and while it may not be the cause for every loss it certainly is not helping. Ideally you want to use a heavy or extra heavy action rod with at least 50lb braid. Setting two thick hooks with 12 Lb mono is going to result in a lot of weak hooksets. Your current rod may be fine if you just try braid
