Line for first baitcaster
Buy good line. Fishing is meant to be enjoyed and you enjoy fishing more with better line ... heck you might even catch more fish. Most of these recommendations are assuming youre gonna blow up the reel. I have never had to throw out an entire spool even when I was learning to cast so don't assume you will have to, especially considering the reel you'll be starting with. If you are that worried about loosing line, strip out 100yrs, put put a piece of electrical tape on the line to make picking out backlashes easier.

Rod and/or Reel Bias?
Can we make the SLX the exception here? That jumbo lettering ... I couldn't. Then again that wasn't the only reason but it may have been what sealed the deal on me not getting one.

best 200-size casting reel for braid.
^ that's the list. These reels are notorious for requiring frequent oiling. As mentioned above a light coating of Shimano's oil once a week or so will do the trick. I'm a big fan of the "I" series myself. Given the choice I'd take a new "I" over a new "K" ... just a matter of preference.

What advantage(s) does a spinning rod have over a bc rod?
Some of it is preference, but I believe some of it may simply be cost-benefit. I'd love to use baitcasting for everything but I can't afford the performance I want out of it, so I go spinning.

Curado MGL vs SLX MGL
IMO the biggest difference is not micro mod but a dual supported pinion (X Ship). That said, I fish what you described above with a standard 200 size Citica I. Unless you're talking super light swim jigs < 1/4oz, a standard reel will get you by.

Went to the store. Interesting observations
I'd consider Bass Pro budget to mid as well. I don't do high end rods or reels (>$300) but I don't think Bass Pro doesn't either.

Spinning Reel Line Attachment?
The spool will move up and down. Make sure wherever you tie the knot, that the spool is in the correct position, be it bottom, top or anywhere in between.

What year is this reel
05ish ... those are the "real" Daiwa Fuegos ... better than a Fuego CT. I don't think they're worth much unless NIB ... I'd fish it!

Shimano Curado K 200, Tough to dial in
Are you throwing 3/5 and 3/8 on the same rod? That might be the issue

Fishing Vs Tackling As A Hobby
Buying up tackle or "tackling" is popular because its far easier to believe that a shiny new reel, rod, or lure is going to help you catch more fish, than to face the reality that hours on the water are the single most important thing. Basically we would rather blame the rod, reel, line, lure, than our lack of experience/skill. Obviously this doesn't apply to everyone but its something you see with people in a lot of hobbies. Marketing is great at making you believe it too.

Amazon Reels?
Its probably a carbon copy of someone elses design. Im sure it will be fine.

$150 Zebco combo!
Those better Zebcos are great reels. Its what I learned to fish on and caught everything from catfish to carp. Even had a couple of outings in the salt catching redfish and it held up extremely well.

RUNCL Topwater Frogs
Use them. When first starting some frogs will probably fall victim to branches and such so use these until youre comfortable.

Best advice to give newer guys
Don't immediately come to the forums. Go read Glenn's articles, catch some fish. Get the big picture first ... then delve into the deep end that are the forums.

A Friday Night Question
My opinion on levels of angling ... Catching once in a lifetime fish (13+ lbs) more than once in a lifetime Master- ability to locate the largest bass and make appropriate presentation Catching lunker bass (10+ lbs) more than once a year Expert - ability to locate large bass and make appropriate presentation Catching keeper size bass regularly Advanced - ability to locate bass and make appropriate presentation in all but most unfavorable conditions Catching small bass regularly Catching small and big bass occasionally Catching small bass occasionally Intermediate - general awareness of presentations and lures Catching any fish regularly Catching any fish occasionally Beginner - general awareness of fishing equipment

Trophy Bass Books?
The Bill Murphy book is great and IMO perfectly demonstrates how we as fishermen are stubborn, as few if any have the discipline to follow Bill's tried and proven approach (stitching) ... myself included.
